Hey everyone, since we seem to be getting some steam with other Painting Blogs here in the OTL forums, I thought that I would start up one that will "hopefully" show the progress on my Red Claw army.

Without further ado, here is where I'm at. I've got some minor work left on the bases, but these are the first unit of Red Wu for my army, with my Celestial Tactician. Hopefully by AdeptiCon I'll have my hands on some Warcocks (Lem Han) and a Dynastic King/Wu Xian model. My hopes are to have a large army assembled and painted for GenCon, I believe we're going to have a megabattle, but I'm not sure.

While this thread will be mostly about my Red Claw army, do not be surprised if I throw in some other Brushfire or EFT models here or there, just to keep things here. DCMs will probably recognize some of this from my Hobby Progress thread in the DCM boards, but I think everyone could enjoy them here

And to give you a little more detail on the Tactician and a Red Wu, here ya go

There are more Brushfire pics here in my gallery.

Sorry Alf, This is the King of Pirates

The Wu are looking good, It'll be great to see them in person in a few weeks.

I'm not sure about a Megabattle, as Gencon charges for events.. But you'll be demoing with your Chugokans

What's the price for an event at GenCon? Also I hope I've got more painted by the time AdeptiCon rolls around.

$4per person minimum, there are other logistical issues as well that make running an event there annoying.

TBH its mostly a headache for me to deal with, if a Warden wants to run something at Gencon for Brushfire or Endless we'll endorse it/prize support.

I would like to say thank you for a high enough resolution Flintlock image to be used as a desktop background.

Any chance of the LeBlank one?

Um atm it's sitting at about 150 resources, with some spare gold and lumber. Red Wu are kind of expensive food wise, and their equipment can get costly too, so the unit you see before you is probably the cheapest unit I have (I've got three 5 man units). This unit is 50fd/0gd/25lr. My Crossbow unit is 50fd/0gd/50lr, and my Pole-ax unit is 50fd/25gd/50lr... Eventually (and much to Cy's chagrin), I'd love to get 10 man units of each of them, as well as a 10 man unit of Lem Han, Lu Pang (the Lem Han Exemplar), Gan Zi (the Red Wu exemplar), Wu Xian the Red Claw Dynastic King, and Bao Yu the Red Claw Celestial Tactician. So if I were to be able to field it all at once, it would probably come out to around 350 fd, 150 gd, and 150 lr before ANY upgrades

And thanks, I was a little worried about all the red that I wanted to get on the model, but I think at the end of the day, it came out really well .

Well I've got 2 more units to do, and hopefully I can get some warcocks (Wehrkind is to blame for that name) and Wu Xian at AdeptiCon. Though my problem is I want a darker orange for the fur so that Wu Xian can have the orange I used on the Red Wu

You'd have to ask Cy (though I'm sure you were lol )

Finished up the Red Wu and Celestial Tactician tonight, I'm extremely proud of these. Though Caty will probably tell me I need a wash. They came out looking exactly like I wanted them to, minus the orange, but that's okay.

Really cool paint job. I like your bases a lot too.

Would have liked to vote, but it's turned off for some reason.

The second image didn't have voting disabled, because I thought it was the best one lol.

It could really benefit from a was Alf, plus I don't like the red bases but thats just personal preferance.

Sooo, not only did I tell you it needed a wash but I've told you that in three different threads!

Seriously though I really don't like the bases being red.

First of all, I'm responsible for the warcock designation... Though I can understand why you'd think it was a Wehr-kind-ism.

The Tactician's face turned out really nice, as did the white markings on the Wu! I like that you went for a cohesive red scheme. But my feeling is a spot of contrast color might be interesting on the Wu... You've got it on the Tactician, those tassles stand out nicely, so the Wu are just calling for a spot of contrast color. Up to you, of course. They look really nice regardless!

You mentioned "minus the orange".... What would you change about the orange, if you don't mind me asking?

The orange is nothing more than the Khador Red Highlight, which is really really orange, and an Agrax Earthshade wash. Which makes me think I got a miss-labeled pot of paint. So it's really really bright, and not as muted as the studio Red Wu, which you painted.

I thought about the color contrast on the mini, and in the end decided that I wanted to go with a Dynasty Warriors approach to this, and have my guys in their "Red Claw" armor. The Celestial Tactician has the other colors on it simply because once Wu Xian and Bao Yu get sculpted, I'd use the Celestial Tactician in a generic Chugoku force.

Granted all of this is changing with the changes to the Red Claw in Second Edition

Captain Flintlock is a Ferret, and captain of the Albator.

Ferret was my next guess. The angle of the face made the snout appear shorter and for some reason that made it scream "marmot" in my head.

Also, totes sold when he's released. Big Harlock fan, and it's a great homage.

Glad to hear.

Matt can attest to the size of my Leiji Matsumoto collection... I think the Kitchen and his office are the only rooms without something Leiji related, there is even a Cosmo Dragoon in the same room that all of OTL's stock/displays are in.

Your stuff is looking really good. You gonna take pics of them in action sometime during Adepticon?

I've apparently found myself in some sort of groove... Don't worry, AdeptiCon will push me out of it

Here is a closeup of one of the Crossbow Wu... I may retake this... I'm not liking the auto-adjusted version :-\

Next we have the unit as a whole:

And finally, the whole army as it stands right now

Please comment, vote, whatnot, thanks!

That's all I hope for

I'm not a great painter, so if they look cohesive on the board, I have no problems with that.

Though just to say I've done it, I might try and enter my Red Wu into the Crystal Brush since an AdeptiCon registrations gets you 2 entries into the Crystal Brushf if I remember correctly. I won't win anything, but I want to enter... I'm terrible at letting people critique my work (which is why I don't upload things to Dakka very often), and so... I figured it's time to learn how to take criticism :(
