Are those supposed to be repeating crossbows?

Either way I think they could use something to make the large block on top look like a couple of different peices. I have no idea how you'd do this though.

This could just be the pictures but have you considered putting a light brown wash on the face? It might make the white less white and the orange less orange and help blend the face together.

Other then the red bases I really like them. Best of luck in the Crystal Brush. Remember winning a painting contest isn't really about having the most detailed paintjob. It's more about haveing the fewest mistakes.

The correct term is 諸葛弩 or "Zhuge nu"(popularly romanized Cho-ko nu, though chu-ke nu is more accurate).

Edit: 連弩 or lian nu is also acceptable. [/pedantry]

I think they are supposed to be repeating crossbows. If you look at the second picture, the guy in focus on the right you can see how the crossbows "look" from the side. I should probably go back and pick out the tips with a metallic color... but I honestly don't know how they're supposed to look. The one in Gym's tutorial looks like it's half the size of mine. but the slits on the top of the crossbows look like they're supposed to be repeating crossbows and that's where the bolts go in.

And I can totally add a wash to a test model and see how it turns out. It probably won't be until later tonight, or Saturday. I've got a baseball game to go to later. (3 more hours ).

Thanks, though I know that there are mistakes I keep finding them and fixing them It's really annoying because normally I'm not this much of a "perfectionist". I was working on the basing last night on the Crossbow Wu and saw a few errors on the Sword and Board Wu, and was like, "FETH!" busted out the paints and went about fixing them. I haven't coated them yet, so it's not too big of a deal... I just hate that I'm being so anal with something I have no chance of winning.

Edit: Hahahaha I just remembered I didn't put on the Bolt holder pouch on the Crossbow Wu... I said "feth that" hahaha

My baseball game doesn't start until 7:05 so I've go six more hours. It's going to be a long second half of the day...

The crossbows should look like this I think

I still don't really like them though

Talking with Cy, they're supposed to have that ammo case on top... So I might go in and "add" some color to the tip" so it looks like a bolt instead of a piece of wood.

I wouldn't be so hard on myself in your shoes. Even if you don't think you can win, entering into it is all about driving yourself to become better(at least for me). Being an anal perfectionist helps that process, even if it's just for your own satisfaction.

Lol, the push is to actually enter. Though depending on how long they're needed, I may not be able to enter... I need them for the Megabattle on Saturday .

I have no qualms about not winning... Just looking at one of the miniatures from the Fantasy/Steampunk Squad competition last year... here is third place:

This is cross posted from my thread in the DCM forums, but I figured I'd post it here in case anyone was wondering, "how does he do such a mediocre job?"

 JB wrote:
What colors and brand of paint are you using for the Red Wu?

It's a trade secret I tells ya!

Models are primed white

Armor:
Basecoat of P3 Battlefield Brown, wash of Agrax Earthshade (any similar wash will do), and then I hit the pads of the armor with Doombull Brown.

Wood:
Basecoat of Calthan Brown, Earthshade Wash

Red:
Basecoat of Mephiston Red, wash of Baal Red, and then hit the higher points with Khorne Red, glaze of Bloodletter

Grey (the grey armor and the shoes):
Basecoat of P3 Greatcoat Grey, Nuln Oil wash

Bronze:
Balthazar Gold, wash of Agrax Earthshade, and the shield gets a hit of Auric Armor Gold with a Sepia wash

"Steel":
Leadbelcher, wash of nuln oil, thin layer of Ironbreaker followed by a small drybrushing of Necron compound.

Fur:
Basecoat of P3 Khador Red Highlight (which is very orange in my bottle), wash of Agrax Earthshade, followed by Greatcoat Grey for the nose/eyes, and White Scar layer paint for the white patches. The tail stripes are a thinned down bit of Calthan Brown.

And in case anyone else is wondering...
Basing is done with GF9 Fine Grit, with an Army Painter Quickshade, and then GF9 Parched Straw, and GF9 Autumn Flock Blend, rims are painted with Doombull Brown.

What are you using to prime?

My GW skull white paint doesn't want to stay on the metal models. Just srubbing them a little and the paint comes off.

GW's primer is awful.

I use either Rustoleum or Army Painter, depending on what color I want to begin with.

Thanks. I'll get a new primer for metal stuff then.

I've been using the same can of Army Painter White Primer for almost a year now I'm fairly certain it's regenerating paint.

Skull White is not really for priming. However, I have to ask. Did you wash your models before painting them?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Alf,

Your Red Claw are making me want to finally put together my Red Wu.

Is it possible to have a Red Wu leader in 2nd Edition?

Also, what historical faction are the Red Claw parodying?

The secret to painting a really big army is to keep at it. You can't reach your destination if you never take any steps.

Yes, I did.

In the meantime I realized that it was a little bit under zero celsius that day when I primed those models outside so that might be the problem.

Models I primed in a warmer day where okay.

Thanks! So the Eastern Wu kingdom, one of the three kingdoms that followed the Han Dynasty...and one of the victors at the battle of the Red Cliffs. I need to see that movie sometime.

So any chance of making a Red Wu into a usable hero in 2nd Edition?

JB, I have to check my PDF, but I believe Wu Xian is still a viable hero choice in 2nd ed. He's the Red Claw leader in First.

WhiteRoo, priming models in anything under 60 degrees Fahrenheit is going to get you some issues.

Who is a Tiger.

You could convert a Red Wu into a Dynastic King or Celestial Tactician, but there is not a named Red Panda hero.

Are there going to be any Lem Han coming with him?

Yes, both should be out at around the same time. (We'll have them on display at Adepticon next week as well)

Little update, as I get ready for GenCon, I've got some figs to paint in a hurry

Lem Han rider work in progress

Lem Han rider finished, with a quick Ballista paintjob

And finally! A yellow color scheme I like and is easy to do

That picture of the chicken shows off a different angle than other pictures I've seen. There is some interesting details to the model.

After GenCon and Kickstarter stuff winds down somebody should take new size comparison shots with the new figures like the Lem Han, Gecko Rider, and Wu Xian.

Just an update as I prep for GenCon, here are my Lem Han in progress shots as well as Wu Xian... He will most likely remain stripless I tried it, and I'm just too heavy handed atm to get it down.

Here's my Warcock after being primed and airbrushed.

Here is an in progress shot of the Lem Han rider and mount mostly done. The yellow looks really washed out, but they're far more golden in color than this image leads you to believe.

And the whole unit.

Finally the King of Red Claw himself, Wu Xian
