Another one that bugs me is that an "average joe" type protagonist can hop into a helicopter, and grab a sniper rifle, and then proceed to hit everything he looks at... Firing from a flying and/or moving helicopter and hitting your target is no easy feat.

Wow! Shocking news, films make stuff up because it looks cool!
Also, a DB5 is not as fast as an F355 even if Bond is driving, setting off fire alarms dose not set of sprinkler systems and computer hacking involves more than hitting a few buttons, guessing a password and shouting "we're in!".

Exploding gunpowder is loud. Really loud.
And here I always thought it was the bullet breaking the sound barrier that did that.

i know that in the m-16/m-4 and other weapons that i have had to use blanks with, they are really not that much more quiet than a full round is. but then again, our blank round have a crimped cap, probably to give a relatively similar pressure on the charge as a bullet has... could be wrong but it's just a guess.

I didn't think most bullets actually broke the sound barrier? That's why they call the Gau 8 silent death because the rounds hit before you hear the gun go off.

I'm a big fan of Doctor Who, and in that TV show, the sound department have the idea even more bastardised - they must think the clickety-clak means the weapon has locked on to the target, since every weapon in Doctor Who does the cocking sound when someone points it at someone else... without touching any of the working parts.

While the author has a good grasp on the concept, and is 100% correct about the model of handgun he uses as an example, he implies that there is no such thing as a single action handgun as of 150 years ago.

It demonstrates an effort made to be understood, and to make your post an easy and pleasant read. By making this effort, you can often elicit more positive responses from the community, and instantly mark yourself as someone worth talking to.

Many high powered rifles have rounds that are faster than the speed of sound. Most handguns don't. Not too sure about intermediate rounds like what you would see in an AK or AR but I think they might be supersonic too.

But yea, its mostly the sound barrier that causes that loud bang, hence why you can buy "sub sonic" rounds for most calibers. Ive heard rounds fired from a "silencer" that was sub sonic and it gets REALLY quiet. Still no where near the "phewt" you hear in movies, but easily allowing you to shoot someone dead in their apartment, and their neighbors would be non the wiser. If you shoot a standard round in a silencer, it does quiet down a bit, but that crack is still coming from the sound barrier.

Coupled with the myth that a 7.62mm will give you a wound that requires just a small round plaster.

The thing that bothers me in movies with guns is the gun holster noise you here whenever someone takes a pistol out, its always the same and it's always REALLY loud. It doesn't matter if its an old west hip holster or a modern shoulder one. Its more ubiquitous than the wilhelm scream or the creaky door. It's like they're a sword or something.
