Is the little rule book still viable if I want to learn how to play... or are there some changes with the 1.5 book that should have me buying that?

If you just want the rules to play the game, you ONLY need the Rules Manual (the little 15 dollar book).

Book 1.5 contains the original fluff to the game (which is a little rough on the fluff), and has the updated rules in the Rules Manual plus edits due to FAQs and Errata.

The rules Manual is still a completely viable way to learn the game as the basics haven't changed, and any errata or FAQs are free online at malifaux.com

I generally take the little rule book with me, since the big ones take up so much space. I prefer to look up rules in a book with JUST crunch. At first, I was not impressed with how Wyrd did this, but now, I much prefer it. I really like how they do the books. I'd be happy to get another $15 rule book with all the updated rules.

I would too, I feel like they might release one of these at GenCon this year, but idk.

Are there rules for the different factions in the rulebook, or is everything on the cards?

The factions don't have faction specific rules like you might find in 40k or other games. And all of the relevant model information is on the stat card. For the longest time, I only had the Rules Manual (mini book) and didn't have book 1.

The 4 books in the game are similar to the main Warmachine and Hordes books like Colossals, Gargantuans, Wrath, and Domination, etc... They contain fluff for the storyline, and model rules for each model that is in that book.

Edit: Like in book 3 which introduces Avatars to the game, you have all of the fluff for the book, and then you have the Avatar rules (which are included with each Avatar model's stat cards), and then it shows you the avatars for the Guild, Neverborn, Resurrectionists, Arcanists, and Outcasts. And then after some more fluff, it contains all of the rest of the models for each faction that were released from the book's release at GenCon 2011 to GenCon 2012 (minus aHoffman though :-\).

I see thank you.

I am really interested in this game. The aesthetic is really appealing. I've just been looking through this forum trying to find my way of late.
So I should figure out which factions we're interested in to determine the books I would need?

You'd technically need all the books at that point lol All the factions have models in each and every book. Though the 10 Thunders Faction ONLY has 10 Thunders models in Storm of Shadows (Book 4).

Actually, Ten Thunders can take the mercs from book 3 in faction and (IIRC... don't have the book with me) Misaki's first incarnation from book 1.

Also, it's worth noting that, while factions are spread out pretty thoroughly, the majority of any given master's pieces (with rare exception) will be in one book, so you can get that one for the core pieces.

And, yeah, since the models all come with their rules, it's fine to just look for online summaries of the models (for purchasing decisions) then pick up the minis w/o books.

Nice, thanks. I'll continue reading this forum for advice on synergies and form a plan of how to structure our initial crews.
