So I'm trying to get my sister into the game, but she completely refuses to even try it (or read the codex's, BL books or look at my models because its a nerdy game of pewpewpew lazorz) so I was thinking, what would the world of dakka suggest to help me get her in the game? we're both students (im in collage living at home and shes a highschooler) living in the middle of nowhere, and I haven't played in almost a year as theres no gamestore near me (of any kind) so I would really enjoy having someone around to play with.

You're SOL, mate.

If she's got no interest, there's no point trying to force her into it. Girls start playing for the same reasons guys do: Something about the hobby grabs their brain and refuses to let go.

I guess you could try the usual ways of getting siblings to behave (bribery, blackmail, begging).

It's nearly impossible to say without knowing your sister

but considering you're saying that she completely refuses too try it..read the codex's, books or even LOOK at your models...what makes you think that any particular army would interest her at all?

if you really don't think it's a lost cause...you could always think of what she likes ...does she like lord of the rings? if she does does she like any particular thing about it?...if she likes the hobbits say hey look Imperial guard has Ratlings....she like the elves? hey there are eldar...does like she sauron? look chaos and daemons

Another suggestion might be taking an interest in something she likes first and maybe explain to her...hey I'm sorry I've been trying to push this hobby on you ..I've been kind of a jerk so how about this...I want to do something in common with you because your my sister my family and I care about you...would you consider playing along if say we did (insert whatever she would like to do)

tit for tat so to speak...that's probably the best advice you'll get

Looking forward to the opening of 40k: The Musical

First of all. Don't force her. If she's not interested then she's not interested. And Keep in mind, if she's in high school YOUR the one that'll probably end up paying for her army. (And she's right that its a nerdy game of pewpew lasers)

If she's artistic, maybe try to bring her into the hobby on the modeling side.

But I would need to know more about her personality to really offer a custom approach... *shrugs* Maybe show her some SoB minis and see if that catchs her interest?

I like to say I have two armies: Necrons, and Imperium.....

40K is not an "intro drug", start with something like X-Wing, or even other nerdly activities like Settlers of Catan or Munckin.

To run with my aforementined metaphor, X-Wing is like the Marijuna of Minatures gaming. Its not too expensive, its in a universe everyone is familiar with, the models are already painted, and the rules are pretty straight forward.

Warhanner / Warhammer 40K by contrast is the Black Tar Heroine of miniatures gaming. Very Expensive, Very Addictive, and most people wouldn't start with this!

OH!

One other thing. Maybe try your luck with Warhammer Fantasy. I'm not saying you'll have any better luck, and while I totally failed to get my GF involved in miniatures gaming, she did express considerably more interest in Fantasy than 40K, when she was giving it the old college try- unfortunately this was just before I started my Bretonnians so I missed the opportunity. Also there is a much better chance of her being more invested in Fantasy due to the popularity of Game of Thrones.

She had an army back in 4th when I started (she got the SM from the Macragge set I got the nids and we went from there) and she seemed to enjoy it a lot (especially the times she "beat" me ) but since that summer shes refused to pick the game back up. As for her interests she loves fantasy elves (I.e WHFB) but claims elder aren't elves. She gave WHFB a try with wood elves (no luck there-shes a sore loser) and I had already agreed to fund her army (means I can pick the units and balance lists from the start). Ive had every WH40k army GW makes in the house and still nothing. Maybe ill see if my college has a club (couple round here do, up in the Pennsylvania area {2 hours and a train ride from the city though}) would be interesting. Thanks mates.

You can't force interest. The only way to get someone interested is to talk about how much fun you have, and the exploits of your games. Don't ask them if they want to try, don't say anything about it, let them take the initiative and make sure to start explaining and showing slowly. Don't show them your whole force, load up images online, and slowly creep into the depths of the hobby.

Okay, maybe we should start a little bit more basic.

How old is she? Her lack of interest may be due to her interest in new things...

There are female players, they just don't like hanging around sexist, smelly, immature kids.

Our FLGS has few of the aforementioned "kids", and last I checked we have 3 female players for 40k alone.

Some parents just protect their kids in this little bubble of care.
I don't think it's fair to say all 16 years old are like this just that this parent was pretty bad herself.

Back to OP:
Why force someone to play something they don't like?
Just doesn't make sense...

Why not try asking your friends to start and see if anybody is interested...

Sadly, this isn't something you can force someone to like.

Look into 40k ventrilo to play online, see if anyone at your college plays, wear a t-shirt with a 40k slogan on it from time to time to see if you get any recognition from people (boom, instant opponent), or check on the "finding players" websites and sub-forums.

Best of luck, man. If it's any consolation, I went from no players (Ruston, LA) to more than I can shake a stick at (Houston, TX) after graduating and getting a job. But that was when I played CCGs, not 40k.
