I particularly like Tony Stark- I'm not a massive Marvel or DC, or even superhero fan, but Stark, Downey Jr version, just reeks of badass. He does just the opposite of EVERY other singular hero of marvel and DC. "I must hide my identity to protect my loved ones."

He's just like "Dude, I fly, shoot plasma, have a nuclear generator in my chest, take alien lasers like a boss and throw nukes into another galaxy. I can literally buy everything. And I do it while drunk. Bitch, I am Iron Man!"

Pretty sure we can end the thread after this statement. Nobody can really top this.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Hannibal was pretty cool. The silence of the lambs is a good movie. And yes, any post 2000s robert downey jr characters have been pretty awesome too

This guy too. Downey took a classic character, renowned as one of the most intelligent and sophisticated PIs in the world, and gave him weed. Now you can't tell whether he's actually clever, insane or high.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
But I also have to give a mention to several Clint Eastwood characters

The Man with No Name- So famous, imitated in every cowboy cartoon where a guy walks into a saloon. Kindhearted, but not a wuss. Legend.

"Dirty" Harry Calahan fron Dirty Harry, the Enforcer, Sudden Impact, he Deadpool and the other one that I can remember. What every kid who wants to be a cop aspires to. Wisecracking, don't-take-no-gak old school cop packing a .44 Magnum "that'll blow yer head off yer shoulders. So I got one question for ya. Do ya feel lucky, punk? Well do ya?!"

Gunnery Sergeant Tom Highway from Heartbreak Ridge. A throwback to Dirty Harry, only he's a marine.
"Well ladies! Shirts off! Same shirt or no shirts at all!"
"But Gunny, we all wearing the same shirt!"
"But yer not wearing the same shirt as me!"

Finally, LAPD Detective Nick Pulovski- another throwback to Calahan, only toned down, more driven, less of a wild-card. And has Charlie Sheen as backup!

Huge Hierodule

The centre of a massive brood chamber, heaving and pulsating.

The Sheriff/protagonist (can't remember his name) from Blazing Saddles. Damn that movie was awesome.

"Where da white wimmin at?"

Another Robert Downey Junior: Kirk Lazarus from Tropic Thunder. "I never break character until I've finished the DVD commentary".

If we're counting anime movies as well, then Princess Nausicaa gets my vote for one of the best female characters in not just anime, but in any movie, ever.

I would say Shinji Ikari, but of the movies he's been in, End of Evangelion turned him into a complete psychologically trainwrecked monster (I still pitied him, but more in a "just put the poor, poor boy out of his misery with a bullet to the back of his head" kind of pity than a "give him a hug" pity), and his depiction in the Rebuild series, whilst still good, and arguably more likable, isn't quite as...interesting as in the original series.

To be fair, Sherloc Holmes did narcotics in the old novels, too.

Yeah, It took a moon falling on him.
Mine has to be Don Lockwood. His opening Narration of the movie is great, and how he is able to convince a studio to DROP one of their highest grossing actors is amazing.

But he wasn't acting... that's just what he's like. The actual actor was fired and replaced with Ermy, who was originally just an advisor on set.

I am pretty sure I remember from an interview, or film commentary or something that R Lee Ermy was originally on set as advisor and was considered to "nice" having worked with Kubrick on Apocalypse Now. He only got the part after putting together his own demo tape, when Kubrick realised he was perfect. Probably my number 2 favourite. Gomer Pile might also be top 10. That is one poor, messed up sod.

Doc Holliday from Tombstone, as mentioned above, is great. I'm your Huckleberry.

Marv from Sin City is great.

The character Cam from American History X is stunningly nasty.

Oldboy's main character and villain are utterly compelling.

Ichi the Killer is a sick bastich.

Dignan from The Departed is hilarious. "She's tired from fething my father"

Ripley stands tall as a strong, but nevertheless feminine hero in Alien and Aliens. Moreso than Sarah Connor who is pathetic in Terminator, and too butch in Terminator 2.

Rocky stands out as one of the all-time sympathetic characters to me.

Leslie Nielsen's character in Airplane might be the funniest role ever performed.

My personal favourite is Chihiro from Spirited Away. Her journey of personal development in the film is wonderful.

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

From IMDB:
Was not intended to be in Full Metal Jacket (1987). He was hired as a technical advisor for the actor who was to play the drill instructor, but he did such a good job at it that Ermey himself was hired for the part.
