I'm trying to do a realistic Iron Hands force and according to fluff (and 3rd ed. Index Astartes) they have no Termy squads, instead Veteran sergeants can be upgraded to have it. Is upgradng Sergeants in Tactical and Veteran squads to have Termy armour(with power sword/fist and storm bolter) for around 20pts still viable in 6th edition friendly games?
Any help appreciated, cheers.

Well, you can't do it according to the C:SM, so you need to ask the people you are playing if it's OK with them. 20 points seems very low to me, it's not that much more then the price of the power sword itself.
I'm pretty sure space wolves can do this with the wolf guard. So you might take a gander at their codex if you want to do this sort of thing.

I would just go for a few HQ's in terminator armor... librarians, or elites if they are good, and maybe ally some in from another battle brothers codex so they can attach to your squads. that way you can play with C:SM and use the thunderfire cannon, nice and fluffy for Iron Hands. But the Space Wolf codex is not bad for it either. Perhaps Space Wolves primary + C:SM for the thunderfire.

40pts would be my bet as essentially he's a Termy Squad Sergeant. But factoring in the fact the Sgt costs 26pts base, upgrade to TDA for 14pts with a Power Sword or Fist and a Stormbolter.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

SW codex gives you Terminator "sergeants" and a Dread HQ choice, but everything else is not quite right.
One point; we know at least some Clan Companies do now field Terminator squads. Clan Raukaan in Wrath of Iron have a five-man squad, led by their Commander, in Terminator armour, plus a veteran Tactical squad and two regular tactical squads led by Terminator sergeants, for a total of eight suits.
The best way I've found so far is to go with the regular Marine codex for the bulk of the army, including a Terminator squad, then take Black Templars allies. Why BT? Crusaders Squads are the only unit of basic Marines left in any 'dex that can take a special AND a heavy weapon with less than 10 men, so you can take 9 men, an HQ in Terminator armour, and have a unit with the proper composition to represent a Tactical Squad. The BT special rules can be explained away as the inspiring presence of the sergeant in his tech-relic suit.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?

All really mean 'keep wages low for the masses, taxes low for the rich, profits high for the corporations, and accept the decline in public services and amenities this will cause'." - Robin McAlpine from Common Weal |

Index astartes puts the termy sergeant upgrade at 25pts, that is over costed when you consider the sarge is 16pts already, so rather than an upgrade to the sarge, just have the option.
Sarge free, bolter or bolt pistol, ccw
Vet sarge 10pts as above, 2 attacks
Termy sarge 40pts, pw, storm bolter, usual termy options except heavy weapon.
This allows you the flexibility of choosing what you want.

Just use the Space Wolf codex completely. It has everything you need to run as Iron Hands.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."
This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

I have an Iron Hands army and prefer fielding it as SW. There is a lot in the codex you need to forgo to be fluffy, but for certain things it is great. I can field a competitive fluffy list and the main drawback is lack of anti-flyer. That can be solved with a SM detachment.
Fluff wise, taking an allied detachment works well. Iron Hands do not like to have just one main leader, so an ally detachment can represent another clan with a 2nd leader for the mission. MotF, TFC, and a backfield tactical squad work well. Stormtalon if you want a flyer or just more dreads.
PS: I have been doing drop pods with 8 grey hunters and a termie serg with combi-weapon as my main force. The biggest thing I want to try is a lone wolf, but I think that might stray too far from Iron Hands.

He's just some Morlock that lost everyone else in his unit on turn zero.
