Space Wolfs and GK were already taken and when I started then necron were not out yet . My option was to either play BA or IG as those were the only I could imagine playing . Before I even bought a model one of my class friends bought 6 razorbacks and mix of BA and SW boxs . With that the only option left was to start IG.

I had a horrible start ,because IG does not scale well in small games and even worse when you dont have those milions of plasma guns+vendetta. I had to wait till summer and went to work in germany , while telling my parents I went to visit a friend near the sea . When I came back I bought most of the models I own now . I took me some time to learn how to play , because IG are a very unforgiving army and soon 6th ed started . the BA and GK sold their armies and are playing WFB . now I just play against the dude with SW , but I think he is going to drop soon too , if that happens I dont know what to do . I doubt I get good cash for my IG or at least good enough to buy a WFB army.

Dark Angels- Ravenwing bikes are some of the most badass figs. Marines in monk robes-yes, please. And I have strangely started to get a rush from the risk/reward of plasma weaponry.

That being said. The models that I liked when I 1st started and got me into wanting to play the game- tau. As an anime fan, I still would like nothing more than to play an army full of mechs. (tanks are amazing too)

Dark Angels- 7500 pts
Tau- 5000pts
Chaos Daemons- 3000/2000 pts
Dark Eldar(allies)- 1500 pts

I started in 4th. For me it was either Dark Angels or Black Templar. The Templar look better and are cooler.

Actually, I change my reason. I choose Necrons because they are just about my opposite. Cold, calculating, making no mistakes. I more or less feel like this when I play them.

I started playing Eldar in the RT days. Went away from the game for awhile, and now I'm all Ultramarines

I knew the baggage that would come with them and don't care

1) I like romans
2) I often play paladins, and while Grey Knights try to be that, their brutal Lawful Neutral tendencies don't jive with me. Ultramarines are THE Lawful Good guys of the realm and I wanted that
3) Easy to collect when I don't feel like painting something
4) Easy scheme to paint when I do feel like painting
5) Easy to keep current with up to date rules and good support from GW
6) Low expectations... I just love the trash talk crap I get from mouth-breathing neckbeards when I pull out the Ultras... I take it, smile a bit... then beat them down. Love'n it.

Orks = when I want to have fun and blow off steam
Tau = when I'm feeling all Sun Tzu
Black Templars = a real change of pace
CSM = sometimes its fun to be the bad guy
IG = Tanks, get my WWI grove on
DA = Ravenwing for my inner Mongol

Started out as Tyranids, because they were all about assault, having big monsters and looking cool, however after four years i gone through some major changes in my life.

so i went over to Tau that is both lore and gamewise more my style, i preferer more tactical play over rush and meatshield and just bruteforce my way with the nids, so Tau is more my style.

Tho i still play with my Nids, but i dont win that often as i kinda gone into that refusal to use horde meatshields as much.

When I first started the game before knowing the rules, vanilla Space Marines were my first choice because they looked "cool" to me. When I got back into the hobby in the early 2000's, Tau are what pulled me back in, and also because they looked "cool".

That said, between my two closest friends and I, we have every army in both the 40k and fantasy ranges, and often switch between them for variety. However, I regard necrons as my "main" army as I have fully painted almost 5000 points of them, enjoy their playstyle, and LOVE rolling to bring them back to life.

I was just getting back into the hobby after a long break (I used to play hordes of chaos in fantasy) so I decided to look into 40k I really liked the background for the DA so I bought a dreadnought and a few marines and the codex, shortly afterwards Dark Vengeance was released so I picked up a limited edition version. Seraphicus is just awesome.

I was jsut coming out of the Army, and I was in mechanized infantry so when i saw the tanks and APC's of the IG, I fell in love. I also had a thing for the Soviets in Space theme of the Valhallans, so it all fit together for me.

Over the years i've amassed quite the collection of models. My current army project is Imperial fists, the most stubborn bunch of guys you will ever meet who refuse to admit defeat or run away even when its the sensible thing to do. and the army is made up completely from models i had representing other chapters, blood angels, crimson fists and black templars all liberally coated in dettol to strip the paint from them.
While i think they look fantastic, several things have made me doubt my choice of yellow marines recently.

1) Yellow is a pain to paint, and its taking me a long time to get the army painted.

2) the biggest thing is, well, my most common opponent plays Slaneshi CSM, and has a stunningly painted army, nice pastel pinks and blues. it gives me a headache just looking at the battlefield with bright yellow and pink soldiers on it.

But i shall keep at it, because no-one else in my area is crazy enough to paint yellow marines, so they look nice and unique!

My CSM I started because I liked the idea of the fallen heroes. None of that pretty boy loyalist stuff for me! I liked the idea of super soldiers who's already incredible power was further bolstered by the dark gods.

My Eldar was also mostly a fluff choice, though a bit of game-play also influenced my decision. I've always liked finesse over brute force, and that is the Eldar way of war in a nutshell. I also like the idea of an ancient race with awesome technology and sorcery that are basically one and the same, who don't rule the galaxy only because they no longer have the numbers to do so.

I started collecting Orks because they're just lots of fun. I enjoy the random elements and wacky rules like don't press dat, and red paint job.

40k Armies:
Alaitoc 9300 points
Chaos 15000 points
Speed Freeks 3850 points

WHFB Armies:
Lizardmen 1000 points

Sisters of Battle. Nuns with guns, what's not to like? Also I love the models, I think the excorcists and the Repentia are probably my favourite although they're all sweet. They've got that old skool vibe which I like [I only buy metal, plastic just feels wrong and I'm a big fan of the older sculpts when GW had a sense of humour]. Finally, probably because they're really expensive to collect, you don't see many Sisters armies and I like to be a little different [wouldn't dream of taking marines].

When I first started out about 8 months ago, I was caught between Marines and Necrons because at the time I thought either one would be a pretty forgiving army. Marines because they're good all rounders, and Necrons because I had read online that they could reanimate, and that wasn't limited to just the DoW game or fluff.. I thought that would be pretty forgiving since hey you have a second chance to fix your mistake .I still had no idea what either one could do with exception of what I had seen in DoW, so it was only decided after my friend said he was doing SM. I then immediately picked up the crons. Little did I know they had recently received their codex update and my friends have been frustrated playing against them ever since...Even when they win! I'm just really good at my reanimation and leaderships rolls I guess.

But now I'm moving into power armor though, just for a little change of pace. I love my Necrons, but this will help me appreciate them more.

Back in the early nineties I used to play MtG. One day I was at a friends house and I got a my first glimpse of the beaky marine. Wondering what he was all about, I inquired about them. He started telling me bout 40k. I didn't get my own models till the mid and late nineties. I was going to start an ultra army till a buddy of mine gave me the first incarnation of the emperors champion. I thought cool. I'll convert him. At that time inferno was running the second demonifuge storyline (by the way GW never finished the third book) featuring BT's. I liked the art/look of the illustrations so much that is when I decided to collect BT. It wasn't until the last two or three years that started collecting other models mainly just for games of kill team. When I mention what army I play people either give me props or tell me to play another army.lol I'm sticking with me boys in black.

CSM for a couple reasons:

Firstly, my old army was IG back in 2e, it would be far too expensive to recreate that masterpiece. A MEQ is more my price range - ironically however now that I'm underway 50% of my models are cultists AND I LOVE THEM.

Second, I absolutely despise blue on blue scenarios, the thought of turning up for a game with nice Ultramarines and have to battle against Blood Angels, Space Wolves, or some other Imperial faction just doesn't sit right with me. Chaos on the other hand doesn't even know the concept of 'friendly fire'.

I agree with ya there. Sisters are by far my favorite looking models to play and paint. Although I wouldn't mind a plastic pentinent engine kit. I love that I'm mostly the only one who plays sisters in my area

The two armies I still have for 40K are Eldar and CSM.

I picked Eldar back in 2nd because they are fast, fragile and have awesome warriors and psykers. I also love their whole path background as a means of holding off the great enemy which they created with their own arrogance.

They doomed themselves to a slow decline but they are not just lying down and taking it. They are still badasses that mean business.

My CSM I picked as I have been reading a lot of the Heresy novels and I have always loved them. I picked the Iron Warriors as my Legion after reading Storm of Iron and Angel Exterminatus (so-so book, but the IW were portrayed well in it). Plus their scheme is pretty simple if you don't worry too much about doing hazard stripes.

I do have my eye on a Salamanders force one day as I really like the Vulkan sculpt and the fact that these marines actually give a damn about the little guy.

Eye of Terror

I remember when I decided to go with CSMs quite well.

This was Rogue Trader days, I had been playing a Genestealer cult army and an Ultramarines army, neither of which I was quite satisfied with. My FLGS used to allow you to schedule time on the tables and would do some matchmaking.

I got paired with this guy who brought in a World Eaters army. Had a CL on a juggernaught and a pure assault army that was 100% conversions. Every one of them was completely unique. We got to talking about the fluff and how to do conversions the right way. I remember him telling me Chaos was the Ramones of 40k, and how no two of the Chaos armies were ever the same. He was slowly tabling my army through all this, and I didn't really care. All the talk had cemented my interest. He summoned a bloodthirster to replace an aspiring champion and I remember thinking it was the angriest looking thing I had ever seen.

I picked up a couple blisters of CSMs that day and proceeded to figure out what I could about the fluff. What there was just wasn't as readily available as it is today, and I took about a year before I decided I really liked Black Legion. From there, it was a lifetime spent trying to learn how to paint black.
