Couldn't come up with any relevant threads using my google-fu, but
If I want to use an epic version of a Warcaster, do I need to have a variant model to represent it? -- Obviously in friendly games it will be irrelevant, but tournament-wise, how does that work?
Thanks!

Well every warcaster has his epic model, and they are usually a bit different (or very different in some cases), so it is important to have the model or an acceptable conversion of it. For example pKreoss and eKreoss So you can see why it's important to use the different models in a tournament setting

In a tournament setting you need to have to correct model to represent the epic version.

In a tournament setting you need to have to correct model to represent the epic version.
The only other thing to add is that conversions are allowed but the base model must be the same and the weapons easily identifiable as the right type & qualities (chain weapons need a chain for instance) beyond that feel free to indulge. Naturally all this is at the descretion of the TO so those rules can be tightened or relaxed as they will.

You forgot the third note which is that the converted model MUST contain at least half of the original base model. While some places may be more lax with this, generally speaking at any Privateer Press sponsored events you will have to stick to this guideline.

If your opponent can't readily identify the model its a no go.
Don't use prime versions to represent Epic versions.
eKreoss has very different equipment from his prime version. iKreoss is even more completely different, he got a horse, a shield, fancier armor, and has a Lance.
Just buy the correct model and everything will be better.

Of course, if you clear it with your opponent beforehand, there's no problem. Just make sure the base sizes match.

To a certain extent, anyway. Rule of Cool usually triumphs, even at official Privateer events, as long as you can still easily identify the model.

My general rule is this, take the model to someone who is familiar with all factions.
Show him the model, if he can't identify what it is within a couple seconds its not a proper conversion.

You gotta use other guys though. Holt, Garyth, or the Merc Gun Mage with two pistols would work as well.

I see, but back in 1st edition I grew a hate for Caine due to a player I strongly disliked playing with. he was very very protective with every troop, moved 2" torward my table edge, then 1,5 back. he was very fussy on rules only when this would grant him advantage, while other times he totally tried to ignore rules, he was also very inclined to complaining. I totally hated playing with him, too bad at the time I was the shop owner and refuse to play with customers wouldn't be a wise choice, commercially speaking.
So, making Caine into a Pistol Wraith sounds somewhat revengeful to me, albeit childish
