Hmm... so is there any reason why you would want to use burst cannon on hammerheads any more? Given that they are now twin linked, rather than 2 separate weapons, SMS seems to be the only choice with a longer range, the same number of shots and funkier special rules. Am I missing something?

Nobody seem to grasp the logic there, no.
Its most likely that they decided that drones/SMS are of save value for the hammerhead now that there is no multi-tracker, so they will make the SMS free, but didnt want to remove the burst option because people had it modeled already.

No. The burst cannon option is objectively bad-- the SMS will be at least equal to it in all situations and is vastly better in some.

Yeah, GW did a lot of things with this codex that don't really make sense.
Had it still been two burst cannons it would've been useful for overwatch supporting fire... but currently it's just a stupid option you should ignore.

I was really hoping the burst cannons on Hammerheads, Devilfish and Skyrays would have been Heavy burst cannons, that would have been nice, espsecially for the devilfish.

I can't think of a single reason to take the burst cannon over the SMS. However, given the new shooting rules and lack of multi tracker, I'm having a hard time taking the SMS when you can just deploy the two drones. As they don't count for VPs anymore, you are now free to move them about and get your four shots off at different targets. BS 2 drones beat out BS1 snap shots that probably have little chance of doing anything to whatever the railgun or ion cannon was shooting at.

I think the only reason would be so that it's still a 50\50 that you lose the railgun on a weapon destroyed.
That, and you feel you don't have enough overkill for massacring guardsmen.

Weapon destroyed results. Hmm. Would each of the drones count as a separate weapon? Or are the strictly passengers while embarked even if they behave nothing like them. It would be cool if they were because you would increase survivability of the maingun due to weapon destroyed results to 2/3 survival.
That might be something to consider.
However, if not, then what about spending 16 points on two seeker missiles and never shoot them. They just exist to add against the weapon destroyed possibilities.

I'm not even a Tau player myself but i'd always run SMS on anything! Riptides, Broadsides, they are just so good now.
4 Twin Linked S5 that ignore cover and do not need line of sight? I'd put that on everything i could!
