Is he still chirping on about second edition?
I understand, yes you did need to run from rats or your character would die like a dog. At least it had better survivability than Rollmaster. Calling the games "evil" is going a bit far, it was hard but rewarding if your DM cheated against the rules.

D&D is perfectly fine. It actually contains more resurrections per group than the bible!

My campaign has been going 2 years, and I only killed 1 character (by accident. I hit him with the boss's "ultra nova" when he was in single digit hp thinking he was at full...he's the rogue that never gets hit). Of course just about every battle has everyone under a quarter of their hp total and at least one person dying on the ground, so I like to think I'm doing my job adequately.
Unless you count 4th edition's magical "you were one hp away from dying, here receive healing and immediately start from 0". that's got to be worth at least half a resurrection, right?
The only RPG I've ever encountered that is without a doubt evil is Phoenix Command. I swear you need to make a sanity check every time you try to read that thing (and another one every time you look up a chart). I've read it all, cover to cover, and most of the supplements. What does that say about me...
Behold the wonders of Phoenix Command!

WE must run from evil. MMM I guess I am different because I am the one who likes to face down evil, beat its a$$ into a mudhole then walk it dry!! I played D&D as a kid and it did not corrupt me. I served my country as a U.S. Marine and now I help protect my community as a law enforcement officer.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

Have that one on my hard drive too. Haven't read it all the way, but what I did read was less "evil" and more "depressing, in a 'lost my faith in humanity' kind of way". I kind of want to find out if anyone has actually played it un-ironicly, and what kind of person they would have to be...
I also want to run it myself, just once, to say I did.
