We are currently at Ling PD (mostly dead) or points between there and MItchem Mall.

Great!
He's at LVL 3 so he probably needs the XP. I think it gives him 5 XP each time he heals you.
If you find a first aid kit, you might try healing some humans for lulz and experience. I've done that before.

Just stay at Ling for now. Shyar is not far but we're not going there now.
Shyar is just three blocks north and one block west of Ling. So you move two north and then diagonally NW (three moves) to reach it.

You'll probably want to save your AP to be honest: most of us have spent ours already, so you'll be all on your lonesome (largely) attacking Ling.
