Its worth pointing out Soulstorm wasn't Relic., it was the last game in the series and by that point Relic had been moved onto working on DOW2

Its why Soulstorm was appalingly bad and why the story was even poorer than DOW1,

Soulstorm's fluff is incredibly weak, best to ignore it...

It would be great to have some more DOW2,. It will be interesting to see where Relic take it.

The Imperium of Man is able to traverse the Warp with difficulty when their Emperor concentrates from his golden life support machine and lights the way. Unfortunately, because the Emperor has the attention span of the average 5-year-old Pokemon fanboy, this means that many an unfortunate Imperial ship has had the WTF WHERE'D THE LIGHTS GO experience, which in the Warp is invariably fatal.

DoW 3 would most likely mean flyers, considering how prevalent they've become in 6th ed. That could be really cool.

I'm fairly sure that by making that joke you "aren't letting it die"

I hope Sega doesn't feth it up.

Sega is just the publisher, which generally doesn't have a whole lot to do with the content of the game. The Total War series has done great under them, I would assume the same for Dawn of War.

I disagree. The flyers in Soulstorm kinda ruined it for me. Have you ever just spammed the SoB flyer? You can win any map in mere minutes by doing that. If they were to include flyers then they would have to be done just right.

Why would the flyers in an expansion for a ten year old game have any bearing on the existence or gameplay of flyers in a new game created in 2013?

We need a balance between the two games. The campaign in DOW2 was an awesome, narrative experience that made you feel like space marines really were these 20 of us vs 200 of them and all we lose is a scout bamfs.

DOW2 multiplayer/skirmish was pretty boring and lame. The last stand was pretty awesome, to compensate.

Ideally I'd like to see a narrative campaign, based around the DOW2 model, a 'conquest' style campaign - ala the later DOW1 expansions, and multiplayer skirmishes at a DOW1 scale.

Factions I'd like to see included would be Space Marines (Invent a new chapter or use a little regarded one, ideally)

Chaos Marines - preferably a mono god legion/warband so you could include a full range of units without having to try and make one or two units from each god to please everyone. I'd like to see Nurgle, personally.

Tau - they are fairly cool, and the Battlesuits could fit the smaller more elite units needed for the narrative campaign.

I'm torn on the fourth choice. I love IG, but having two imperial choices seems crass. Although it might be interesting to build a narrative campaign around characters using overwhelming numbers and firepower to overcome smaller elite forces. It could work, done right. Failing that, Orks or Eldar would probably suffice. Nids would be fun, but it would be hard to build a narrative around them. Great in the conquest mode though.

My all time favorite thing about dawn of war 1 was the fact that it had nearly all the races, each with their own UNIQUE campaign. They really need to do that again with DoW3.

They need to do a proper Sisters of Battle game. SOBs vs. Slaanesh forces. Lots of naughty Daemonettes. Sisters become corrupted in lots of girl-on-girl action.

I know DoW1 dipped into all the teams, but lets be honest, the Story and control of DoW2 and Chaos Rising blew away any story attached to anything in DoW1. NOW....doing something more in line with Warcraft 3 where you jump around from force to force....

Don't forget, they also weren't really integrated as "flyers" in the game; they were basically just skimmers that couldn't be assaulted. Also don't forget that Soulstorm did nothing right; in the hands of a competent developer (like Relic) flyers can potentially be really fun.

They didn't have unique campaigns, at least not outside of the very scripted ones in vanilla/Winter Assault. Dark Crusade and Soulstorm had the same campaign but you started somewhere else and it had some other baubles to keep each army unique. The campaign in Retribution that every race could play wasn't that dissimilar.

The single player campaign in DoW2 (at least until Retribution's, which is sorta fun once I guess) is one of my favorites, and you're right on the money about it. The skirmish sucked due to the atrocious AI, but the multiplayer 3v3 and 2v2 battles were some of the most fun I've ever had playing games online, and the most fun I've ever had with a 40k PC game. It kills me that there's no community anymore. I found the Last Stand to be a boring and repetitive slog, but horde modes don't really do much for me anyway.

I think it's best for the franchise to avoid DoW1's scale, since at that point it's no longer about units countering units, but more about two players emptying their toyboxes on each other and seeing what's left standing. There's not much strategy in it, and it ends up just being a chaotic mess where you couldn't use strategy if you felt like it. I wouldn't mind it going a bit bigger than DoW2, but going all the way back up to DoW1 scale or bigger wouldn't be ideal unless it was an Epic-scaled game.

Honestly, Sega picking up the 40K license is a good thing.

I'd be on board for a Dawn of Total War in a second. But I imagine if they do make a DoW3, it will follow the model of the first game. While I enjoyed DoW2, the format left a lot to be desired.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

With all the Horus Heresy stuff going on at them moment that might make the most sense from Sega's point of view

Different enough from DoW1 & 2, easier to balance (almost all marines with minor variations), ties to the new BL novels

If I remember correctly, there was a statement from Relic a while back that said that DoW3 would be revealed 18-24 months after the release of DoW2:Retribution which means they should have been near revealing when the THQ news hit. If they were already deep enough that they were ready to reveal, it would make sense that they would sign up with GW again since they already have tons of assets. Plus they have a great track record and are a proven developer, which GW would probably prefer to taking a chance on an unknown quantity.

Semi-related, Sega also owns Creative Assembly, the companies behind the Total War games and who recently acquired the licence to make Warhammer Fantasy RTS games, so it has been speculated that the reason Sega purchased Relic was to consolidate the Warhammer RTS licences under one roof.

I did some shadow writing for an unreleased Dawn of War expansion and Dark Millennium.

Just some dialogue, nothing much.

I'm wondering whether I should contact Sega to see if they are going to be using my work.

It would be amazing if the game started out like DoW 1 but the population caps scaled up to an epic scale, you could start a battle with a few scouts and the longer it went on it would involve whole guard regiments and titan legions fighting over massively expanding maps with intractable battles and full blown daemonic incursions but always allowing the skilful small unit victory.

Honestly, I'd prefer another Space Marine game over another Dawn of War. Though I think I'm practically the only fan who did, I really enjoyed Space Marine and think they could do a really cool sequel. Perhaps one where you switch between different Marines from different Chapters throughout the Campaign.

I've just never been a fan of the Dawn of War series. It never captured the scale of the universe well-enough for my liking.

P.S. Any news on, with SEGA picking up THQ and the 40k license, what is happening to Dark Millennium? Last I heard, they were dropping the MMO aspect and making it a single-player game with multiplayer components. I'm wondering if they're going to finish that game.

They need a call to duty,or BF2 like FPS.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

"Working with GW" is the reason I have some hesitation on this.

In any regard the good graphics aside, I detest Dawn of War 2 compared to DoW 1. The much smaller/more limited style of play (going towards RPG elements and away from RTS elements) annoys me. I like massive armies, and 40k is a setting meant to have massive armies.

This would be good.

Only thing to add would be more wargear options and maybe a new hero or two for the last stand. A Necron lord or something would be good.

I enjoyed the hell out of Space Marine and would love to see a sequel, but I'd rather see another 40k RTS before another shoot mans/punch mans game.

I don't exactly understand the appeal of DoW1 anymore. I've played the hell out of it and while it looks cool to see the huge armies fighting each other, there's just not much strategy really involved. I think any games at that scale degenerate into "all my dudes vs. all your dudes" fights and strategy goes out the window since there's not even room to maneuver anymore. I'd be perfectly happy with a scale between DoW1 and 2 with more interactive terrain like in DoW2. If any game could recreate the amount of fun I had during DoW2's multiplayer, I'd be ecstatic.

As for Dark Millennium, THQ folks were quoted as saying the MMO side of the development ended in March 2012, but there hasn't been a peep since.

Space Marine was fun, but to develop as a series, it ought to go back to the earlier working concepts, more of an action-rpg, akin to the DoW2 campaign, but done from a different perspective.

The original concept called for a customizable squad, skill development and so on. Want to run a team of devastators with Heavy Bolters? Go nuts. Assault marines with flamers? Sure, etc.

Something a little more tactical, and more customizable would take what was a fun, good game into something stronger. Something between where they are now and Mass Effect is my personal hope.

Therefore, I conclude, Valve should announce Half Life 2: Episode 3.

It was a game that was practically begging for co-op, and would have been a blast if it was more like the first trailer they showed. I still liked it, but I would have loved it if it had that sort of progression and co-op.
