I was thinking -- on my drive into work, this morning, so I haven't put A LOT of thought into this -- that I would love to see GW release a Codex (WD, Direct Order only, I don't care) of new and forgotten Independent Characters and whatever special rules those ICs would have.

Off the top of my head, as a DA player and SoB sympathizer, I can think of:

- Cypher (Special: Allow Chaos Marines and Daemons as allies, disallow IoM)
- Ephrael Stern (Level 3 Psyker Badass)
- Miriael Sabathiel (Same special as Cypher)

What other ICs would need to be added (I -know- those aren't even close to the only ones)?

Thoughts?

The Red Terror was the only character I could think of. Everyone else seems to still be around.

Moriar the Chosen should be reintroduced and I would also like to see some more Chaos Characters.

Playing mostly Necromunda and Battletech, Malifaux is awesome too!

That would be neat maybe it could also have a special wargear section full of unique stuff to give your own ICs

I woldn't want to see Cypher on a board. His whole storyline's mystery would be ruined by having him pop up in every Chaos army, or even giving him stats.

That would be like allowing you to field someone as overpowered as Draigo who can stomp his name on daemon hearts while stomping around the void.

...oh, wait.

Why would giving someone stats who already had it before.

If it isn't now, it isn't canon.

If it was at one point since 3rd edition and does not contradict newer things, it is.

N'kari!!!

For feth's sake GW, you've spent an entire edition of Fantasy and a bit of 40k building this guy up, and still nothing to actually show for it!
So much for Slaanesh being loved... No wonder those Daemonettes go from dream-girl to 'hateful ex-wife' in a heartbeat.

I doubt he'd be fielded that much by Chaos -- If he forced you to take an allied detachment of Dark Angels, but didn't open up DW or RW as Troops, most people would look at that as "Cypher's cost + 70 points." Also, GW wouldn't have to reveal any more than they already have -- just give us updated rules and stats. Hell, they wouldn't even have to sculpt a new model, like they would for other important ICs.

Captain Cortez, Chaplain Xavier, Ancient Helvictus (or was it Galatan?), Captain Agemman. Morkai the Grot too.

I'd like to see a return to SC's needing a point limit to be used. Remember Abaddon only being usable in 2000+pts games?

It's funny, I got INTO Chaos, because I needed to buy the Codex, to play Cypher with my IG (Was the must f'd up thing I could remember, having to buy a Codex for another army) and a friend seen me with it, and knew I have a HUGE BFG Chaos fleet, so he bought me Abbadon, and from there it went down hill (Thousand Sons, then their HQ, then 20 Marines, then 20 more, ect)
But the last chancers would be nice. I bought the set because I needed a guy with a heavy bolter for my IG, and the character's mini was not out yet. And I wanted a female IG piece other than the one Catachan that was out. Would be nice to see their return I would buy another set of then. Maybe even use them for my Dark Heresy game.

As a Tyranid Player, I'd love to see the return of the Red Terror, potentially with a new model.

Come to think of it, his ability to swallow opponents whole would really come in handy in challenges

I've heard rumors that they might actually be doing this. Something like a Codex: Allies of sorts. Throwing non-GK inquisitor squads, and kroot auxiliaries and other random non-faction things that ally to others in the fluff into a single place. I'd imagine there would be a fair number of independent characters in it.

Just rumors, though...

Ones I can think of off the top of my head - be warned, some of these date alllllll the way back to 2nd ed...

Blood Angels - Veteran Sergeant Cleutin (carried the Shroud of Sanguinius around which acted as a banner of sorts)
Dark Angels - High Interrogator-Chaplain Sapphon (Asmodai's boss), and Cypher of course
Ultramarines - Captain Agemman (Terminator that carried a twin-linked "plasma blaster")
Orks - Malaki the Grot (followed Ghaz around and had the game's only 2+ Invulnerable that worked against *ANYTHING*, no arguments)
Dark Eldar - Kruellagh the Vile (Archon of the Kabal of the Flayed Skull)
Chaos Marines - Doomrider! (Seriously, no idea why he was taken from us...)
Chaos Daemons - the four Greater Daemons - someone already mentioned N'kari, there was also M'kachen, Foulspawn and Doombreed. The last three have pretty much been replaced by Kairos, Kugath and Skarbrand... but... no Keeper of Secrets love?

I've read those same rumors, but there hasn't been any indication of what will actually be in it, only speculation. If it's a bunch of ICs, awesome.

ICs would be a great way to add value to White Dwarf. Page of rules, page of fluff. Army showcase thing to show off conversions people have done or pimp the real model if they make one.

They do .99 cent rule sheets for some fantasy monsters on the iPad. I'd love to see ala carte special characters for 40k done the same way. I'd hate to have to spend $40 for a book of assorted characters of which a small number would be for my army. And from those that are part of my army, I'd probably only be interested in one or two.

But then Death from the Skies has shown people are willing to buy a full book for one or two units, so who knows what GW will do.

I think this is a great idea, some kind of special edition release to give love to some of the orphaned characters would definitely get my vote.

From Eldar;

Iyanna Arienal - Iyanden Warlock, an upgrade to Wraithguard squads from 3rd Ed codex, had an LD10 based invunerable save!

Nuadhu 'Fireheart' - Autarch (?) of Saim Hann, fights from the back of a converted Vyper Chariot

I'd love to see both of these back in action, given the current number of special characters present in the Eldar codex (I count 9), I'm not holding out much hope for them to be brought back in the next book.

EDIT: I would love to see Cypher back on the battlefield, his model is totally badass!

Ooh, I'd forgotten about this one actually being an existing character. In the current Codex she's stated (I think) as having a companion Wraithlord bodyguard - waiting to see what the new Codex brings and unless this changes, I'll be converting her riding atop one

It would be a great idea and there is a precedent for this in fantasy. There was a separate book for independent chaos characters in late 5th or 6th edition.

This is actually very cool, and could be really good if done right. Like, they should have Chaos Legion ICs which actually allow you to run proper Night Lords, Alpha Legion, etc.
