This is what happens when you give into the gun control crowd - TOYS become illegal.

Masterpiece Megatron agrees with you.

Spoiler:

Due to United States Toy / Imitation Gun Laws, it is illegal for any business or individual to import the MP-05 Megatron because it does not have a blaze orange safety tip on the end of barrel. A copy of this law is listed at the end of this description. In order for BBTS to legally import this item, Megatron must be modified. A blaze orange safety tip will be added to the end of barrel. This orange tip will be a custom made plastic plug that is attached to the end of the barrel. The tip will add between 1/4 and 1/2 inch in length to the end of the barrel and will not hinder the transformation between gun and robot.

Without this orange tip modification, US Customs may seize any incoming shipments for this item that they discover because it does not comply with US Laws, so we are providing a legal and risk-free solution to that problem.

This modification requires that all boxes will be opened, and the contents removed for modification. The factory tape seal will be cut, and some internal plastic packaging may be modified or cut. Collector's Grade packaging will not be available due to these modifications, and the normal Standard Grade description will not apply because the tape seals have been broken. We realize these modifications will slightly change the appearance of the toy, but we also realize that giving you a legal way to own this toy is much better than not owning it at all, or running the risk of US Customs seizing the item.

He was arrested for violating a law about modifying airsoft guns on university property.

You can disagree about whether such a law is needed, but you can't disagree that he was arrested without cause.

Water guns are a misdemeanor. If you reload them with a two liter cup that counts as aggravated circumstances and bumps it to a felony.

This.

Yes, the law may be stupid.

It's also stupid to bring things that look like assault rifles into a school dorm.

Were you there at the beginning? Cause we were rolling around Baghdad in '03 with two improvised gun trucks and hillbilly armor. And by improvised I mean sandbags and a spot welded .249 mount up top, with like a 90 degree forward facing fire arc. Lost.

Now those were the days.

Is that really what it's about? It's not that the government is health and safety obsessed. It's that guns are not a part of our culture like they are in other countries. The gun violence in the UK is relatively non-existent (Less than 100 per year) and trending downwards. If you legalised guns to the extent they have in America I doubt you would see a further decrease in gun related violence. To say it's due to a health and safety culture is simply ignorant...

Sorry can someone just explain this to me. Why was this guy arrested by the police? I understand a university might have a policy against BB guns but that’s an internal matter that shouldn’t have anything to do with the police.

How can possession of a BB gun be legal for the general population but illegal for a student? Surely a can possession of a BB gun is either against the law or it isn’t?

It's New York... that's all the explanation you need.

Apparently though, to possess one in New York City, you need a license.

Thats not actualy true. Most of the gun crime in the UK is commited using illigaly heald firearms. However the major casses that effect legal gun ownership, Raoul Moat, Dunblain, are with legaly heald firearms. Guns used in street crime do not normaly affect the legal ownership of firearms in the UK. Noone has suggested that ownership of shotguns should be restricted due to drug gangs.

And yes, you can be arrested for carrying a bright orange airsoft pistol, if you are dumb enough to wave it around in public and act in a way that makes people think it is a gun. You can also be arrested for carrying a length of 2 by 4 or a base ball bat. You will not be arrested for having an airsoft gun in a bag or in your car.

I think even a bb gun is illegal in Bloombergistan.

All three gun massacres in recent times were done by people who held their firearms legally, though to be fair, the Dunblane guy had been recommended to lose his licence but the police had failed to take action. There are many other gun killings each year, of course, about 40 to 90 a year over the past 10 years. Most of these are done with illegally held weapons.

It is actually pretty easy to get a gun licence, for a shotgun or bolt action rifle for general target or game shooting. You need to satisfy a number of conditions. There are several million legally held weapons in civilian hands in the UK.

I don't understand why the kid had to be arrested. So he had a air-soft gun when he wasn't supposed to. So you confiscate it and give him a warning. Did he really need to be draged out of the building in cuffs in front of all his classmates?

yesh, dont be suprised if more of this BS happens,

the canadian anti-gun lobby got fed up with all the grassroots people in canuckistan telling them were to put it,

they forced through registration and licensing laws in the aftermath of tragedies as well, now over 10 years later we have finally started to undo some of it.

expect BS like registration, licensing, and out right bans,

they did that here, 30 years ago you could buy full auto with no real problem, and we were fine.

now you need special licenses for any gun, even specialler ones for things like pistols/ar-15's

they have banned more and more guns every year, and confiscated them using the registration system (which was sold as a "safty" tool, which, when we dismantled it last year, was proven to have saved no one, phad been invloved in targeted gun thefts, and cost over 2 billion)

last year they banned some .22lr rifles here because they had a vauge visual appearance to the AK-47 (no similar working parts)

this is of course in addition to mags that hold more then 5 rnds being banned, any pistol shorter then 4.5"barrel, and that we cannot take most guns into the bush, handguns are range only, even if you buy a handgun specifically designed for hunting, you cannot hunt with it anymore.

for the love of god, dont let what happened here happen to the US,

now to own a gun, you give up your rights, cops and goverment officials now can search your house whenever they want, with out a warrant here, and you could have it taken away, at any time, with no compensation, if someone decides it looks particularly scary.

the anti gun lobbiests have also been harrasing ranges, getting them shut down, one range was literally burnt to the ground under suspicious pretense.

seriously, do not give up, do not let the US go the way of austrailia or the UK,

The US cops don't tend to take quite such a low key attitude, probably because so many people are armed.

Not not a gun though. It's a toy. More than likely just a way for him to make extra cash on the side by building custom air soft gun and selling them for spending cash. It's an over reaction that leaves this kid with a record for the rest of his life. Yes the kid broke a rule but it didn't need to be escalated that far.
