I will start with thanking everyone who has posted interesting off-topic stuff other than tabletop gaming.
I had been sucked in many times and now it is my turn.

Plain and simple: did you REALLY like Diablo 2 and how the tone and character of it was?
Path of Exile is the game for you.

It is free. Yes, I know, sounds strange, not crippleware? Need microtransactions so it works fully? No, none of that.
It is in Beta but like Minecraft, it works like a full game.

Most of the things I liked about Torchlight 2, Diablo2 and 3 is pretty much there.

It does work on a remote server like Diablo3 but any server "issues" had no effect on me unlike D3.

Main differences in a nutshell:
Spoiler:
Offensive abilities other than the normal attack is in the form of socketable gems that level up with the player as long as they are socketed.
Defense and "Perks" are in a skill tree (more like web) similar to Final Fantasy 10 but a lot prettier.
Abilities are based on Strength, Dexterity and Magic. Strength gives defense with armor, Dexterity gives dodge and Magic in shielding like regenerating hit points.
There are 3 main character classes based on the skills purely and 3 more as hybrids of two of the skills.

It is a very DARK game not so good for the under 10 crowd.

I have not been frustrated with any element of the game other than when areas get REALLY hard which is a good thing...

I have played computer games since home computers/game systems became available and never stopped since.
I have my kids to keep me "stuck in" even if I get all crusty and say "they don't make em like they used to".

This is the first time I felt really good about a game: made by gamers, for gamers and they have a GOOD plan on how to make money: You only pay for beauty items to jazz up your spells/abilities or armor.
Grinding Gear Games is who made it.

The download is huge: ~4gig but it shows in the result.

Anyway, try it, let me know ESPECIALLY if you do not like it, I would like to know what type of person would not like the isometric scrolling hack and slash games.

Just trying to give back, if you get addicted I will not accept responsibility.

Some of the items you pay for are really expensive. Most items are in 50-100 gold range and 96 gold costs 10 bucks. Paying 8 euros for 1 set of horns isn't that tempting.

It's over 5gigs not 4 and thats not even the worst part. The servers are really poor. I have stable 100 mbit/s con and it still downloaded at only 1mbit/s. My recommendation is to find a better torrent or something. The slow servers don't have just poor download speed but because the game is always onlive you get major lag ingame (there is no singleplayer option).

My real issues with the game are the rather spammy combat (casting lighting strike all the time isn't really fun) and when playing in group there is no sharing or waiting for others (each player doesn't get their own loot drops)..

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.

If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in.

Played it for a few days with a couple of other members. I don't think any of us has touched it since then, and that was a good few months back.

I personally don't like the Diablo games, so I went into this expecting more of the same.

I was pleasantly surprised when I started, but that surprise wore off extremely quickly, and after about a week or so, all novelty had worn off and I felt no urge to play the game again.

It's not made me change my original position on similar games at all, and I still don't like them. PoE was different enough to be relatively likeable, but it ultimately failed to hold my attention through exceedingly repetative and unrewarding gaming, and a storyline I never actually felt the least bit part of.

The game itself may very well have dark tones, but I didn't see anything very dark at all; although that may just be down to the fact that I was never encouraged to look very far.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

If you like linear click-fests like Diablo you'll probably enjoy Path, also there's something to be said for the rather competitive hardcore scene. Neither appealed to me though.
