so being someone who really hates the posture of orks, i find that they look a whole lot better with backpacks or something on their backs.
i really love kromlech kits but the price for me is an issue.
so im hoping some folks here can come up with a cheap alternative that i can make.
some sort of backpack, gear, piece of equipment... just something to place on their backs that makes sense.

any ideas?

Buy IG packs off ebay.

IG backpacks would work. Not sure if they'd take the time to load up packs though, maybe some orks...anyway

The 2nd edition Orks had backplates. Really simple little circular armor pieces. Nowadays they have built in "metal" plates on their backs, you could build off of those maybe?

Sounds like a green stuff modelling project.
I've had some sucess in modifying a backpack with harnesses for a power axe and a few other things. A standardish rectanular pack with tweaked in sides, with a roll fixed on top should be relatively quick to do.

i thought about that jasper but the quantity that i need scares me away.

I used a mix of old Stormtrooper packs, IG com-link packs, space marine pouches etc.

The Empire Pistoliers have bedrolls and saddle bags
Spoiler:

The Kroot have some rough looking bags with knives hanging on them.
Spoiler:

Maybe give each one a bedroll, a Kroot bag, a stickbomb bag and then throw in some random pouches?

Those Kroot bags are really small, and have a concave underside so they fit on legs and things.

The IG backpacks aren't that small if you give them other bits as well, especially so if you use Catachan ones. In Daston's post you can see one of the Catachan bags on the back of one of the Orks in the first picture. There's a stikkbomb on it, and it looks a little weedy but a regular boy wouldn't need much anyway.

These are really nice! they look awesome with the berr.....ays? no idea how to spell that But they do look good.
Ive used chaos and space marine back packs on a couple of mine, even taking a helmet and putting it on there head sorta like how the 'youth' (22 is classed as old right?) wear em nowadays. using GS to make a chin strap, a very comical look with it falling off.

Have you thought about oyumaru, green stuff and making a press mold of some back packs. You dont even need a lot of GS. If you press in a thin layer that makes the shape you can then use sprue to make the bulk of the pack. If you take the GS out before its fully hard (2 hours or so?) you can then even have a little flexibility and press it down till its the look you want. total that would cost like £15 and you could do with 6 oyumaru sticks - about 12 back packs maybe more (18) if you squeeze them in. So thats roughly 18 backpacks on a rotation, leaving 20 minutes between a set of 2-3. then you'd have a pretty much continuous series of:

Fill mold -> take out cured packs -> put on sprue bits -> cover with molded pack -> fill mold -> take out one of the other sticks....... yada yada yada
Might not work out exactly like that but you could cover a horde eventually

Guess it depends. The more you want to spend the less time you will have to invest. visa versa!
What about the knives on the sprues that are stand alone? Any odd bits from other armies? spare guns strapped to backs always looked good to me

There's some 1/35th scale and 1/48 scale "accessories" kits (mostly WWII) that have a lot of backpacks for cheap in them. I've used those and they look good. And different.

Sorry it took so long, I made them and forgot to take photos and got engrossed.

These are two I pressed using a metal original and oyumaru. They are made from GS. I can bend them just before they are fully set to make them take the shapes of backs better too.

Some of the more adventurous boyz could have promethium tanks on their backs too. I seem to recall that there are some appropriately sized jerry cans in some of the IG vehicle kits. Another possibility is that you could use sprue and glyphs/plasticard/random decorative bitz to give them back banners. Obviously any nob with a bosspole would need a particularly big and flashy one if you go this route.
