Pretty cool though. Still not a great 2P entry point, but cool.

$80 for the starter box seems reasonable? They list MSRP at 100 bucks so 20% discount, and it will get a KS upgrade at some point, adding enough value that it'll be a better deal than online discounters.

But can you have a ton of fun with that starter? 3 Martian walkers? Just doesn't seem terribly diverse

Hopefully they'll release the rules for us to peruse.
The slightly higher levels (170 early bird levels) seem like a good deal (basically starter + faction specific units) if you and a friend each pledge, then you can swap your starter units for each other's and have a rockin' force.

if the rules are such that 3 tripods vs humans can be an interesting game, it would not be bad at all. That's a challenge however to provide enough tactical choices to the martian besides move, shoot.

You know, for me one of the appealing things about 15mm games is that they're typically less expensive than their larger counterparts. This seems to be stretching that notion a touch!

Well, this is absolutely true. I was looking to this game as one of the first BIG 15mm Kickstarters, thinking it would be a crazy value laden game.

I think my confusion also stems at the fact that I, and many, many DakkaDakka posters shunned Dropzone Commander due to its price..... claiming $100 starters were crazy, etc... Meanwhile, this game is as pricey or moreso.

It's a bit rich for my blood. Been considering entering the realm of 15mm, but I'm not seeing the value for the price.

Starter sets should be a little more inviting.

No wargames these days, more DM/Painting.

I don't think it's a good idea to associate scales with price ranges. In this case, AD seems to have used 15mm to create a strong contrast between hulking vehicles and swarming infantry. That's why it's kind of shocking at how big tripods actually are. Yes, it's a 15mm model but it's a 15mm model of a gigantic vehicle.

I can speak for only myself, but I didn't expect 15mm to be cheaper, only that a game with a 'starter' level be a bit more accessible.

Though I will agree, those tripods are massive, the 'massive' tanks feel, hmm, tonka?

Do you mean, cheaper? Or with different units? A different size game (skirmish?)?

I kind of agree, regarding the Land Iron Clad. Hopefully, it will have some crewmen on it (a la the command tank) to give it a better sense of scale.

I don't like the Goliath, it does look Tonka with those big wheels. But the Land Iron Clad looks awesome, are you kidding seeing a model like that on the tabletop, with all the little crewmen and sponsons? Frickin hardcore.

Also don't like the tanks with towers on them... but hey, that's what conversion is for. Those tripods are really the most awesome thing. You could do your own scenario with tripods vs. WW2 era if you want as well, since there's more figs...

Don't get me wrong: I think it looks INCREDIBLY cool and it makes me wish some of my core games (ahem 40k/Warmahordes) were in 15mm for bigger games.

I think I'm just having trouble rectifying the balance of the $80, $110, and $130 dollar sets. There doesn't seem to be a lot of rhyme or reason as to why one has a lot of human infantry, one has none, another has a lot of martian infantry etc etc.

I'd rather not go to such a high pledge level to get a good array of the available units etc for. I've backed a ton of kickstarters, but maybe I'm just not as skilled at pricing at this scale or the kickstarter pledge options.

Gotta agree that the price levels are discouraging.

I really sympathize with that sentiment. I only have a few dozen 15mm models myself and never conceived of this take on 15mm, where you could have extraordinarily big units because the scale is quite small. It doesn't even really work to think of them as actually being 28mm because that leads to thinking of this game as skirmish-sized, which it most certainly is not. Perhaps what they need is a detailed example of play so we can see how powerful tripods and Mark IVs are in-game. The best analogy I can guess is that, you know how Apoc games of 40k still feel like 40k -- just with more stuff to push around? Well, maybe this game is the kind of scale Apoc seems to promise and not just a "big skirmish" as it were. Just a guess.

Also, I agree that this KS seems to encourage picking an army rather than (for example, with the Robotech KS), jumping in with both sides so that you can go in with a friend or have everything you need to introduce the game to your friends.

Anyway, there have been lots of cool developments today. They just upgraded the templates to plastic and upgraded the dice as well, not even for reaching a stretch goal. Now that to me indicates they were going to do that from the start but still, it's nice to see they realized that those would not make great stretch goals and I hope it means the stretch goals they will set will be more about the miniatures than the accessories.

AD also posted some cool insight into the background and where they want to go with the game:
This discussion came up in the Comment Section and some folks felt it would be best put out as an update so more people could see it.

The question was about alliances and what else will be coming out:

I'll try answering a few things at once. The UK, the US, Canada, and what's left of Australia are "in it together".

The Martians don't line up with anybody. They don't even understand the concept.

The Venusians aren't happy that Mars is going after earth and think they might be next so they are coming too. They will have allies on earth that switch around.

The Germans and French are together. They are up to ...something.

The Under dwellers are looking for food and loot and most likely will align with anyone that can support their ,,,err..needs.

So the Great Interplanetary War:

Part One, Book One- All Quiet on the Martian Front- Martians, Canadians, USA, and the British Expeditionary Force. Rules for ground combat, Land Iron clads, and more is the subject of THIS Kickstarter. NO ARMY BOOKS. Ever. Unless we do some free stuff.

Part Two , Book Two- The Guns of Venus- Rules for Venusians, Under Dwellers, Flying Machines, Germans, French and maybe a bit more. Maybe Japanese? NOT part of this Kickstarter but I'd like to show some of the models towards the end. NO ARMY BOOKS.

I've no interest in the game itself, but will be buying some plastic tripods when they become avaliable on their own so I can play some Alien Invasion games using other rules.

Beautiful, but my will is flagging... Dust already does a good job, for me personally, of capturing a sense of scale (IE models ranging from infantry to enormous!), and i'm seeing that even $200 invested into Dropzone Commander gets me a full 6x4 table of aesthetically acceptable terrain, plus the rules, and two moderate starter factions... while my $260 Martian Front pledge leaves me wanting, and still needing to invest in terrain, etc, as i'm new to the scale.

I wish them well though. Alessio can do little wrong in my eyes so i'm sure this game will be good.

The new add on trench system and martian heat fences are cool.

That one tank screams to be a Leman Russ in 15mm.
That and the tripods they've shown (which rival/beat outright anything else I've been able to find on the net) are super well done.

The terrain bits are kind of...

The Martian cylinder could be easily done for about $4-$5 using some PVC pipe. The laser wire and 'power node' also doesn't require a ton of modeling skill to make very cheaply and just about as nice-looking.

Hopefully, they'll focus on models and less on the terrain bits that are more readily available/do-able by players. Just my .02

So did anyone ever come up with a clear idea on what a good 2 person starter set would be?

I guess I'm not seeing which package to pick to make this happen.

I want two forces on the table that are fairly, if not totally, even in performance/points.

LOL. This made my morning.

@ the follow-up response, the starter set is an even 600 points. Not sure how to call it from there.
