If theres a rule banning first turn assaults, I'm quitting the game. That would be the last straw in the heaping pile of straws that is the 6th edition rules

There is no blanket rule that disallows 1st turn assaults. They are really tough to pull off, but nothing disallowing them. (Except for units that use a scout or infiltrate move/ other specific exceptions to 1st turn assaults).

Man if this could go down this way it would be a snap for orks to 1 turn assault. Sideways deploygives let's say 3" since it is so long, 7" for the move, 6" disembark meaning you need an 8" or 7" with warlord trait. That being said I would not do this wiht my BW's as sportsmanship ship dictates.that if I pivot it I then measure the move from the pivot point. Rules lawyer all you like but.anything else is trying to cheat while saying its not cheating.

The pivot-and-move thing has been the way movement of vehicles works in 40k since 3rd edition came out, dumping the old turn arcs and crap of 2nd. Yes, it can gain you an inch or two, sometimes. It's not a big deal.

Deploying side on in order to gain the extra 1 or 2 inches does come with its risks as well, like if your opponent seizes the initiative, you've just opened up all your tanks side armour, so it's not always a win win.

For most of the vehicles that gain when doing this the side is the same as the front armor... So it's pretty much a win/win.

Well, the Battlewagon is a prime counter-example. And of course, even for vehicles with equal side and front, deploying 90 degrees sideways at the front of your DZ does make it a lot easier for folks to move and get rear shots.

I did say "most" :-)

The benefits far outweigh the risks IMO.

Krazy- it really isn't cheating. The studio are 100% cognisant of this.

It is fundamentally how vehicle movement works. No one complains when this is done in later turns only turn 1. Anyone actually caught by this is either very unlucky or an idiot who deserves it.

Or merely inexperienced. Once a player gets caught by this trick once, they are unlikely to be caught by it again, so its effectively a bit of a rules oddity that doesn't really affect the overall game. I certainly wouldn't try and base a whole army strategy around it.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

I thought there was a FAQ or a rule that made you measure from the centerpoint of the pivot so that long vehicles couldnt be exploited like that.

*shrug* there was some talk of such a thing a while back in my local store.

If you measure from the centre point the pivot trick still works. The centre of the tank never moves more than 12".

No such FAQ exists, and even if it did it would not make any difference

Its honestly very rare to get first turn charge even with the fastest of units. When it does happen it may suck on the other hand your first turn chargers are often times so far ahead of the army if they aren't cherry picking a target they are just being fed to a grinder.
