I was thinking about inquisitors, and albeit they do serious work and seeing demons and shizz will probably take its toll on a guys mind. But SURELY you must have a least a couple of inquistors who are sitting there surrounded by Grey Knights watching a world turn to oblivion, and turn to a termy and go "An orc, an eldar and a tau walk into a bar..." Power and humour = ultimate legend. Plus it would make for epic persuasion cause people like you AND it would scare the **** out of them knowing they might me sentenced for heresy moments later!

Of course, there are loads of different personalities within the Inquisition. The example that really springs to mind is Amberley Vail from the Cain books, who has a pretty noticeable sense of humour.

Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics.

In the Cain series there Is an inquisitor of the Ordo Xenos who has a good sense of humour, apatite and apparently sex life. She also says that most Malleus members are bat gak crazy and aren't good company. Many others are super puritan who think smiling is heresy while others are also bat gak crazy but for there studies rather then the daemons. So an inquisitor with a sense of humour would be rare, and probably not to be found in the Ordo Malleus or hereticus, unless of course burning people is a funny pass time for them...which I guess it is!

*edit* LOL, they auto correct *poop* to gak/ Wonder what else they correct...

I mean, while the Inquisitors are all highly dedicated to the ideals of the Imperium, they're still human beings. Therefore, I would say they're all at least capable of humor.

It should be noted that the contents of a Ciaphas Cain novel are meant as an in-joke on the grimness of other, more serious Black Library novels and a meta-comment on the setting in general.

That said, sure, any Inquisitor is an individual, and is likely to have their own personality traits and foibles. There's probably a fair amount of humor, even basic gallows humor, within an Inquisitor and his or her cadre.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

As said before, they are still people. They just have a heavy duty on their shoulders. Look at the leader of a country, or the general of an army.

Another thought to consider is that Inquisitors like to keep people off balance, because that's the best way to get them to reveal things. An Inquisitor might switch between grim seriousness and gregarious humor to catch people off their guard. Or perhaps he could present a cheerful front to cause people to underestimate him when the time comes to drop the hammer on them. Basically, I can see an Inquisitor using humor as a weapon in his arsenal more than I can see one having a genuinely jocular disposition, though the latter is certainly possible.

Inquisitor Vail (Ciaphas Cain series) is indeed noted for a wry sense of humor, particularly in her writings. Inquisitor Finurbi (Scourge the Heretic) cracks a joke or two, I believe. While neither Eisenhorn nor Ravenor seem particularly big on jokes, a few of their fellow Inquisitors seem to be a little looser in their stodginess. Most Inquisitors tend to have some messed up backgrounds, so usually have a hard time cutting loose. That being said, they are indeed individuals, and can run the gamut from stick in the mud to raucous joker.

THe only requirement for being an Inquisitor is to have an unbending, indomitable will. Everything else varies between inquisitors.

So sure, some Inquisitors have a sense of humor.

Don't think that this is necessarily a GOOD thing, however, if you are a heretic...

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Inquisitor Barzano from Nightbringer was a pretty funny guy. No one even realized that he was an Inquisitor until he very dramatically revealed himself and threatened to exterminatus the planet.

They do not have senses of humor. Only a sense of heresy in those that are weak willed!

Edit: Yes. They're still human after all.

I like to think there are some that flat out invoke the bunny eared lawyer trope. The inquisition are some of the top dogs in the imperium, so considering the amount of probably extreme personalities floating around why wouldn't there be a few whackjobs? Provided they're good at what they do (and let's face it you have to be the best at it in the first place to become inquisitor) who's going to frown down on an inquisitor who get's his jollies making heratics wear silly hats mid interrogation?

Bit of a silly question in my book.

Some do, some don't. They are people after all.

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

I can't help but imagine an inquisitor like Christopher Walts in Inglorious Basterds. Humorous but extremely off putting.

actually, Christoher Walts himslef just has that dangerous but joking vibe to him. No I am going to have to convert up a Christopher Waltz inquisitor for fun.

This is the dude i am referring too btw.

The humor like the setting is "black".

How do you think they dream up all those methods of torture or "appropriate" punishments / executions?

Humor is a safer indulgence than any other.

Nothing scares a heretic or daemon more than when you are laughing at them.

**Edit**

Could you imagine Christopher Walken as an Inquisitor? That humor would be about right.
