Subject: Greedy Space Marines?
|
 |
Lesser Daemon of Chaos
|
Ok so I'm always on the lookout to start new armies, I'm just finishing up my chaos force and decided to go Imperial (basically so I could buy anything and use it as an Ally for my chaos army or imperial army). Now I've been kit bashing Grey Hunters and Chaos Marines which has given me an access of SW stuff, I figured I might as well start a wolf army and after paging through the codex I've decided it's for me.
But I don't like the wolves (that furry kind not the armored space warrior kind)that much
But I have an affinity for raccoons, so Space Raccoons, that's a terrible name though so I was thinking of calling them the Emperors Bandits, this is were the question comes in...
Can Space Marines be greedy? I was thinking that my guys will be renegades but only because they can't stop taking things (raccoons shiny stuff get it?)
Ohh as for the no Space Wolf descendants
"The Bandit's origins are mystery, the chapter claims they are of Raven Guard stock, yet research done on fallen Bandit members reveals a gene seed more closely related to Space Wolves but not an exact match however this should be impossible as the Bandits recruit from Lotor a heavily forested planet on the opposite side of Imperail Space, nevertheless the Bandits insist on their Raven Guard heredity going as far as to "acquire" a shipload of Corvus Power Armor Helmets to emulate the Raven Guard"
So I'm thinking grey armor with gold trim black and white helmets, and lots of loot on each leader.
My question, will my greedy wannabe wolves be seen as a creation of /tfg/ or is my fluff justification (fluffication) enough?

Sure they can; we have the Relictors for example. They were declared Excommunicate Traitoris for their Xenos and Chaos artifact hunting.

Not so much greedy as the knowledge they were collecting was forbidden. Actual greed would be collecting artifacts for the sake of collecting. Maybe some ties to the AdMech and some Rogue Traders, they collect everything no matter its origin which leads to problems with other chapters, and the Imperium at large due to disagreements concerning ownership. Also, you can use the codex without having your chapter be SW descendants...

Fluff is a flexible thing. One reason GW has thousands of un-named chapters, and two whole legions left fallow is so people can make there own stuff up.
Animal totems are not a new thing to the space marines. Raccoons are a bit non-traditional, but certainly workable.
If you want to stay loyal to the imperium of man, there are a lot of ways you can help. Even if you have a habit of taking things not yours.
Searching for ancient STC templates
Recovering artifacts and wargear from eras past.
Collecting Xenos technology for study
Or it could be a doctrinal interpretation issue. "Honor the Battle-gear of the Dead" Is it not written in the Codex? Where is it said that we should honor only our own, for a noble foe is worthy of respect. We collect such relics, and return them to our sanctum where out chaplains can say the prayers that their vanquished owner are no longer capable of doing. In this way, we serve the Emperor's Will.

I dunno, how do you say Racoon in Latin?
No, just kidding, don't do that. Naming DIY Chapters in Latin is lame.
I don't know if "Emperor's Bandits" seems like a very Space Mariney kind of name. Bandits are not good things to be when you're a force for order and such. Seems rather... ignoble. Maybe something related to being Tricksters? My suggestion is to not go too literal. Maybe "Masked Somethings" which could also give you the reference to the facial fur patterns common to raccoons? Though I suggest against Masked Bandits.

Raccoons are native to the New World, so Latin was extinct by the time they were known to Europeans.
While it was mentioned a bit obscurely, I'd like to point out more clearly that the Blood Ravens, at least as of Dawn of War II, seem to have collected an awful lot of relics of other chapters that were "presented to them as gifts."

Already used the Latin (Procyon Lotor) for their home world of Lotor, haha....
Hmm I like the idea of Masked somethings
The Masked Angels
The Masked Talons
The Masked Knights
The Masked Sons
The Masked Legion
Maybe one of those?

Heyh I invented the Space Minoans, they uses the SW-codex and oxes or cows in the roles of wolves. Kind of funny to think about Space Marines riding highly aggressive cows (with red eyes, they must have red eyes) into battle. And instead of ale they drink milk. Of course it was a joke-chapter I invented just for fun to tease Void Dragon. Greed is the first step on the path to corruption. Just ask Huron. You give a Space Marine a fiefdom and he starts a civil war.
Definitely fits more for renegades and scions of Chaos.

Could go all-out and say they are a disgraced chapter shut off from the Imperium but not deemed Excommunicate, and give them a not-so-imperial name.

There are definitely a couple of greedy chapters out there. Salamander by Nick Kyme starts off with the boys in green squaring off with some Marines Malevolent who are trying to sticky-finger some wargear that doesn't belong to them. Space Marines represent the warrior-elite tradition historically seen in samurai and medieval knights. While some of those guys were indeed the noble, upright paragons of virtue they are portrayed as in popular culture, lots of them were greedy, bullying, tyrannical sociopaths who were all too eager to use their power and authority for personal gain. Several orders of knights were known for the plundering they did in the name of 'liberating treasures for the church/crown.' If you want to draw inspiration from these darker sources to create a less-than-ethical branch of the astartes, then more power to you!

The greediest chapter is the reviled and beloved Blood Ravens they either name their weapons after random Primarches or steal their weapons. Neither is kosher.

That's kinda the route I was thinking, I was thinking maybe they original were used as an extraction force for rare tech like STCs and such but they also take other stuff, they still are loyal but people notice stuff going missing, so they are tolerated but just barely.
I'm not really thinking Blood Ravens style, I'm talking actual loot that they keep for show like baubles and shiny bitz.
Emperors Light Fingered Face Scrubbers is stupid, way too long....
....Now Emperors Face Scrubbers that's a name I can get behind
Sacred Scavengers sounds pretty cool
I'm basically envisioning astartes that act like Rogue Traders

Even better you can still be dedicated to the Emperor and not like the Imperium, as it has turned from the emperor and is run by a bunch of fat old greedy men. You could ligetimitly say that the Imperium has usurped the Emperor and may actually be keeping him in the golden throne. Kind of like the Grand Inquisitor in The Brothers Karamazov, the church doesn't want Jesus to come back, they don't need him anymore.

You should call them "Hands of the Emperor" or "Emperor's Hand" and here's why. His hands shields us from the evils that threaten us. Of course, this protection only comes when one shows their "devotion" as a tithe and that shielding hand becomes an open palm, ready for payment.
