Nice job but I have to say it all seems quite flat. The skin and armour seem to be completely washed out by the red of the blood, although I appreciate this could be viewed positively or could be a request by customer.

Great work on the space marines though. Love the muted colours of the Death Guard there.

Very good but as the guy above me said parts are very flat. The face lacks any depth at all and the armour could use a bit of variation rather than just bronze.

The only visual reference I had to go on was the Forge World photo and their model is all bronze unfortunately, didn't want to take liberties with a primarch and paint something wrong :-/

As for the face, I think it would be appreciated a bit more if we had snagged a photo of him head on as opposed to his side view. From the front view you'd get to see his eyes and some contrast in color, but at this angle I see what you guys are saying.

I love the blood effects and I think that the casualties are painted well. The Primarch however, sadly I have to agree that it really leaves something to be desired HOWEVER I can totally understand not wanting to screw it up and only going off of reference photos. Ultimately you only had so much to work with, and that doesn't fall on you that falls on FW really. For what you had to work with, you did a good job

Thanks I really appreciate that. Sometimes I will spice a model up with my own thoughts and ideas but as I said with the Primarch I am not familiar enough with the story (unfortunately) so I only had the FW photos. I would have liked to have done some other colors and stuff on him but I thought "Well maybe in the books he is known for his gold armor, if I paint plates differently will the client be mad?"

I agree with you though, it would be nice if FW had some photos that had more detail to follow (which isn't there job I know) but FW being what it is you'd think they'd have the most awesome of awesome art for their products.

Minitaire Ghost Tint Fresh Blood and Tamiya Clear Red, those combined make an amazing set of blood stains, if that helps you replicate something you've seen here great! (And if you use those two paints to do some blood stains/splatter link me I'd like to see it =])

I generally wouldn't have so much blood on a model but this is Angron and this is kind of what he does. Smash, slash, and basically kill, dismember, and destroy. Figured if any character is going to be blood soaked, it would be Angron.

Paint looks ok, a bit flat as mentioned before, and I also have to say he is missing the red "spike" tattoos on his face, that is a must have for Angron as they were markings from when he was a gladiator/slave.

"You are like a son and together we have all but conquered the galaxy. Now the time has come for me to retire to Terra. My work as a soldier is done and now passes to you for I have great tasks to perform in my earthly sanctum. But words of caution I have for you for your brother Primarchs are strong of will, of thought and of action.

Would you recommend Tamiya clear red? Been tempted for a while and I must say the blood is spectacular here. Any tips?

Absolutely, I use that and Minitaire Ghost Tint Fresh Blood. As for tips, just tinker with the paint it took me about 30 seconds to realize how efficient that clear red is at doing blood spatter, you wont be disappointed I promise. (Honestly, someone had sent B4H a message on Facebook asking for critiques and I had noted when I messaged him how awesome his blood effects were, that is where I got the idea for tamiya clear red.)

Exactly what I thought, especially during the heresy with legions, not chapters, so he definitely was fighting hordes of marines and lets face it, its Angron, the lord of death and blood and all that jazz lol.

Thanks, I wish that there was a better photo reference for Angron, other than Forge World's photo I've never seen a quality painted Angron before. In addition to this I think the artwork in the heresy betrayal book is mostly gold as well :-/

Hi there, hope you don't mind, but I have some comments to make regarding the blood. As you say, Angry Ron is always described as being covered in blood, so I think the gratuitous use is justified. I would however criticise the colour you've achieved. It's especially obvious on the white armour of the unfortunate death guard that when Tamiya clear red is thin, it looks much too pink to work as blood, even fresh arterial blood is not at all pink. I think people tend to rectify this by adding brown ink or paint, but without experimenting myself I would suggest adding a small amount of blue or purple

Im gunna go against the tide here and say that I think its brilliant, The more muted and not "zomg look at mah over colourful armour" look really fits the whole 30k theme and this piece especially, it really gives the impression of a merciless slaughterer, without going OTT with colours and special effects on the armour. It looks good, its gold, and its not too underwhelming or overwhelming. All in all brilliant!

The critiques regarding your paint job are legitimate but understand, the criticism being leveled is understanding of the fact that the overall work you have done is impeccable. You are operating at a very high level and any criticism thrown your way is largely subjective.

I envy your skill and keep it up!

p.s. The photos and the depth of field play are exquisite.

Oh I know, I just feel that I catch more flack than positive praise sometimes and it is nice to get some positives comments here and there lol.

My Commander R'Alai on reddit got bashed to hell for example:

Even though Austin (B4H boss) thought it looked sick.

Nonetheless, the comments in this thread were not terribly bad, basically a distaste for the gold (which I get) and if I had a reference that showed otherwise I'd certainly have given that a whirl, and the blood, some personal preference and taste but one of the critiques had cited the tamiya over white issue and I honestly didn't notice until I read the comment which means next time I paint blood I'll try to pay attention more when going over lighter colors.

Thanks for your comment as well, the feedback has been pleasant.

Wow, the Commander I can get behind! The paint job there is spectacular, I am not usually a fan of such highly emphasised OSL either.

I know the feelings about the negativity but as someone else said I was merely suggesting room for improvement, please do not take offense as you should be very proud of your work, certainly puts my own to shame.

I try not to, generally I take the suggestions to heart and end up improving my efforts painting wise. Aside from painting improvements I think over time I will also learn to handle criticism better, guess that is something that comes with age

Also, on reddit the OSL and highlights got ripped apart, some people liked it while other people ripped him a new tau exit port if you catch my drift >.<

Edit:
BTW I checked out your images, your Ethereal looks nice as does the hammerhead. As soon as I get some photos from Austin at B4H I will have more tau models to show, particularly in this case my stealth suits. I did the 'fading into stealth' effect and I'd love to show that to you (as you've done something similar in your photos).

The highlights were a bit extreme (admittedly) however from a distance on the table the highlights are great. That is the catch 22 so to speak, if you paint a model to look amazing in high def shots with subtle highlights it will lose detail when viewed from 4 feetwhereas a slightly harder highlight doesn't look 'as' good blown up but holds visual appeal at range.

I tried to take the critiques on him with a grain of salt but the reddit page was a bit of a kick in the teeth when I read it.

Ok I could be missing something here. But why would angron my slicing parts off of his own men, and death guard. I'm still working my way through the back log of Horus heresy. And currently reading betrayer. But it never makes seance for him to attacking death guard let lane his own legion. (Apart from the fact he is a psycho) but forge world have done the same. So I know I'm missing something lol
