My friend is not big on painting, so he asked me to work on his army. His colors of choice happen to be purple, ornate bronze and jet black.

So i sat down and started to brain storm on how to pull off a purple stone for this, and what scales would contrast with purple without appearing to loud. How to make the weapons look like obsidian. Now painting lizardmen is not in my list of things done and i was looking for any tips on how to achieve what i have mentioned.

The work will be shown in stages like some legs being the test to get the color right and so on (if i remember that is to post progress reports).

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

You mean purple stone for the bases? A dark blue would go with the purple and also tie in with the black.

What came to mind when you said the colors was black scaled saurus with grey/tan underbellies and a purple stripe of scales running down either side of the spine as well as purple on the crests. The weapons and armour in the ancient bronze, for obsidian I usually just paint the section black then paint a clear gloss over it to give it the glassy look though I'm sure there is a more in depth tutorial somewhere that can be found with a little searching.

I like your idea man, and i will be using it except for one minor change, the scales along the back will be yellow, or orange to show danger.

I had a Lizardmen army about 15 years ago. I just looked at the new models, quite a bit different. Thinking back on how I painted mine (different colors but nevermind that) combined with how I painted the few DA I collected would work, and is similar to what I believe Warboss Ironskull said.

Base black, then a light-medium drybrush of dark purple, followed by a medium purple and a brighter purple. Scales could be painted tan or a weathered bone color. Thinking somewhat like a gila monster, just dark purple instead of black, and bone plates instead of orange scales.

I also agree on the method for obsidian. Black, with grey or slightly blue/grey highlights gloss coated, or even a gloss black.

Skinks, I'd base purple, and go up to quite bright. Or something like the tongue of a blue tonged skink.

I am watching this thread intently.

Someone gave me Lizardmen in order to get me into the hobby, and I'm stumped as to how I'm gonna paint them. Sure as hell isn't going to be the standard blue scheme thats for sure.

I feel that i have issues with stock color schemes, i have WoC and they are coming together. Hope this thread helps you out, i love seeing peoples views on here and the tips they give.

So a mix of desert yellow and bleached bone is how i am seeing that come together, i will test it on models i have lying around. Still it wont look the same without the scales, sadly i ran out of black P3 primer going to get a can tomorrow and paint off and on during the week.

haha i know, his father got it for him because he wanted someone to play against, the father in question plays orks.

Shortly after he realized he does not like SW, and i dont want SW if i wanted SM i would go with DA. So his dad got him Lizardmen, i pray he does not realize he doesn't like them when i am finished painting them.

That sounds pretty good. Maybe a wash in the scales and dry brush of bleached bone too. Either way I look forward to seeing it.

Feel free man alls fair in miniature war

When I started Lizardmen (first fantasy army) I didn't really plan a scheme ahead of time, when it came time to paint I just looked at the colors I had and went from there. My Lizardmen have cream under bellies, green scales/skin with a thin band of red scales running down their back with a broader band of blue bordering the red. Natural schemes work great but I do think Lizardmen need to have a little flair to them.

After thinking about it a bit more you could look at various stones such as amethyst and tanzanite but paint the metal to have a marbled effect then give it a gloss coat to make it reflective/shiny.

You got any pics of that list man?

I'm considering trading in my Lizards simply because they seem so dull, and a big part of that is that the only scheme I've ever seen them in is that boring blue one.

Currently the few pics I have are horrible because cellphone cameras suck. I'm gonna try and get some decent pics soon though, the army is about 14 years old and I want to re-do it as I've got new fluff, some home made units/character conversion plans and there is a rumor floating around that Lizards will be getting a new codex soon (Bretts deserve one first but that's a different thread).

As far as alternative paint schemes just look at real reptiles as inspiration/referance. Few years back I knew a guy who had desert themed Lizardmen his units where based off of actual desert lizards including a gilla monster for his Old Blood. Also look into the significant of various colors in pre-collumbian cultures and apply those to your army.
