Nice job on the top finish. That Apothecary turned out pretty sweet! I had a lot of fun painting that model too; it's probably the coolest of the Marines in the Leviathan set. Nice to see you getting some games in, too. I do look forward to how your Armies on Parade entry turns out. I kinda wish we had something like that locally, but the nearest GW stores are 2 hours away from me in either direction.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

One perk of having an actual GW store close. They do painting stuff. Armies on Parade, mini of the month comps, and other odd ones from time to time. Independent stores might run tournaments, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen one do a painting comp. Before the GW in Clifton Park opened up, the closest official one was like a 4 hour drive (Which I never did)

There are always our local painting comps here on Dakka.

It does feel good to be playing again, but I need to up my game if I’m going to be playing more 40k. There are a lot of moving parts that you need to leverage to make things happen. Especially for Eldar.

Flocked the board last night. Going to try to spray some glue on it to help fix it next.

Grave Guard should be done getting basecoats. Now for the extensive cleanup passes. And more work on the vamp.

Some ramblings on making the display board. This is what I did, and might not be the best practice. We’ll see how well it holds up, as I’m still working on it.

Undercoating is important. It will show through the flock, so this is not a skipable step.

Dry times: don’t skimp. And when you test, test on the corner or somewhere. Not the middle, like an idiot.

My proccess:

Aquire parts. This will be a frame, a metal sheet sized to fit, paint, flock, PVA glue, big brush, water, spritz bottle. Tin snips if you need to cut the metal. Drop cloth to keep paint overspray/glue in check.

Trim metal to fit. Do note that there will be a border that the frame will hide.

Paint the metal your base color. Allow to dry.

Coat with a thin layer of 50:50 glue/water mix.

Scatter a thin layer of flock. You might need to shake it around to make sure it’s evenly coated. Shake/tap off excess.

Allow to dry thoroughly.

Put glue/water mix into spritz bottle and mist it over the flock, allowing it to soak in, so it fixes it in place and helps prevent wear and tear. This is not just a light flock on a mini’s base that’s never going to be touched.

Wait for it to dry. Wait longer. Do not touch.

(do other side of metal in a different scheme because you are crazy and cheep)

Put in frame.

Secure. I might add some reinforcements here. This will depend on your frame. I suspect that that little metal fasteners on mine would be fine for keeping the metal in. But if I load it up like a tray full of minis, and held it by the edge of the frame something bad might happen. Like the middle would drop out and dump everyone onto the floor. Would be prevented by holding it not by the frame, but keeping fingers on the backer, but would be nice of there was more support. Screwing in some little brackets onto the corners might help.

I’ll try to grab some pics later. Right now the snow side is waiting to dry after the flock went down. I’ll give it a day or so to dry, mist it to fix, and give it another couple days.

5 more down. Puts me at 9/20. Last of the first 10 in progress now, 10 more built waiting for a nice day to prime.

While I wait for the weather...

Started one of the new barrow knights, and some random filler. Vamp is slow going in the back, but getting there.

Wight lord is done being built. I think technically I built the king version. Whatever. I’ll have 2 mounted wight HQs, can do one of each. While I like the rules for the king, the lord might actually be better in lists, as he’s significantly cheeper and gets a lot of work done.

The Boy gave me 3 SM primaris bikes for Father’s Day. I think they might be fun to run a squad of 6 with the chaplain. Although part of me wants to wait and see if we get a full bike kit with more options I could kitbash them into. Not rush, the year is pretty packed with projects.

I'm having to wait for a window in the weather to get the rest of my Lumineth guys primed (did one with a brush so I could test my Fire Nation color scheme), not to mention my Tomb Kings and Kruleboyz. Lately around here the weather is some combination of rainy, extremely muggy, or windy. I learned my lesson the hard way last year about priming on a muggy day. Your undead are coming along nicely!

As for the bikes, I actually really like the Outrider models. And they work well with the bike Chaplain (you can even stick one of the Primaris Mario Karts in with them). They paint up nicely and do look good in the Ultramarines scheme.

I’ve had enough bad primes to be patient waiting for the weather to clear.

Most bikes have the issue of being big enough to get tedious halfway though to paint, and having hard to reach spots to get a brush on. IIRC the 3 I painted already were not the worst thing I’ve done, but certainly not the most fun on the bench. I can’t stand the look of the Mario Carts. On my list of things to do eventually is get a GSC Ridgerunner, swap the stubbers for bolt rifles, and stick a marine in the back manning a MM. Should be the same basic size, but not look it came out of a happy meal.

Getting more paint down this morning. I should figure out what I want to build next, now that I’m done with the Deathrattle box.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. Have a good one!

PtG game yesterday vs. my chaos foe. Who I think might be the only other active person in the league at this point. But that’s fine, he’s a great guy and the games are fun.

Mission is to hold objectives, bonus points if they are uncontested.

He goes first, pushes the green knights to the center, no combat (3 snake eys for charge rolls), but scores some points. on my turn I charge with the bulk of my army, while my degenerate vamps go to tangle with his mino guys. He countercharges the chosen, and manages to put down my mounted vamp, but I erase the knights. in the corner he kills the vykos, but I drop 2 of his big guys.

I win priority and take the double turn. I gum up his line with skeletons, and start working down the flank, pulling down his general and the chosen. The mino decides to leg it from the corner leaving me the objective.

I think I’m missing a couple of turns somewhere, I think we ran 3 before he withdrew and ceded the field. Or it might have just been that ugly. His army is tough and hits like a truck, but I’m getting better are remembering and utilizing my tricks.

Anyway, victory Soulblight.

Got a lot of good painting done yesterday as well. The last barrow guard is ready to be based, and is the last model needed to go fully modern plastic for my army. Also finished 2 markers and put some layers down on the other stuff. Need to decide what to move down to the active handles.

Weather was nice this morning, so I primed the wight king, the last 10 barrow guard, and the spearhead terrain (which was waiting)

edit: Duh, The goal this month is wights, so I’ll start cracking on more of them.

I love it when the pic seems fine until you upload it, and then the focus just decides to flake out.

Anyway, that’s the 10th barrow guard, and the last mini needed for my PtG list to be fully modernized. If I’m going to be moving armies around in mag boxes, I need to get a decent bag for rules and dice and stuff. I’ve got a messenger bag I use for RPGs, but it’s falling apart. And mostly full, but I clean a lot of crap out of it. Would still be nice to have a dedicated AoS/40k bag.

I should get some old vs new pics of all the units. Maybe wait until I finish the mounted vamp lord.

Also finished the pair of CC markers. Quick and fun. No use, but cute.

Well, huge congratulations on collecting a Bronze, Silver and now Gold in the Monthly comp! That is very satisfying, you must be pleased.

Your display board is coming along. With colour and a base, it looks to frame your Army well. What is the deadline for it? I think October, but not sure if I half remember reading that or if I made it up.

I'm not an AOS player (never played a game), so when I look at your game pictures it all just seems a bit odd. It looks like a push them forward and fight type of game. I'm sure there is more to it though - how do you find the game?

I’ve not done a lot of the matched play style AoS, which has more depth/secondary objectives. It’s like 40k in that there is a lot of get to objectives and hold them. Spearhead has a deck of things to do to gain victory points as well (or use for boosts). Manuver and position do mater a little, but it’s not a rank and flank game where that’s key. Lot of play in what order you activate units in combat, as it’s back and forth. Command points, abilities, etc.

I enjoy playing. Maybe more then 40k. Some of it might be the crowd that plays it. While it might not be balanced (we’re still talking GW here) it seems better then 40k. Some of that might be the fact that the ranged firepower is not as intense, so units don’t get erased as casually, so even a bad matchup you still feel engaged.

The actual deadline for Army on Parade is sometime in October, but I’m going to try to get as much as I can done for the summer challenge.

Game yesterday. My normal chaos opponent wanted to try out his sylveneth, and there was a new player who wanted to step up from spearhead, so we mish-mashed a game with me at 2k and they were about that. Turns out they were a bit over, but whatever.

I needed to put some unpainted blood knights on the table to get to 2k, but I knew this and had packed them. In non-PtG play the mounted vamp needs to be fielded with them, or half his rules are useless.

Tree guys were using my own tricks against me, with a lot of healing and movement tricks. Made it hard to pin them down to focus fire them to death. I need to work better on my screening and pinning. A lot of my army really needs the charge. Ended up loosing the game, but it was fun.

Aroooo!

Got some dire wolves. I think they will add a lot to the army, both mechanically and thematically. They have a 10” move and and run and charge. 2 wounds each with a 5+/6++ at 10 wolves for 150 points seems reasonably tough for getting up the table and keeping things in place. 2 attacks each hitting on 4s wounding on 3s is not shabby for damage output, but not going to delete anything fast.

Thematically I like the wolves running around the hooves of the Blood Hunt as the vampire lord and his retinue ride to battle. Hunting dogs on the chase with their masters.

I’m trying to wrap by brain around the regiment system for larger games. I know it’s advantageous to have fewer “drops” as the person who finish deploying first chooses who goes first/second. Some characters let you take another as a sidekick, so you can get extra heroes. As an army, Soulblight is very HQ focused. But how many regiments do I want to include? I’m trying to keep it to 3 for a 2k list, might that might be too restrictive.

It does not help that I also like to keep things thematic. Mounted vamp with his hunt, Foot vamp the mistress of the fallen, who’s retinue is the devolved bestial vamps. That leaves the bulk of the army to try to cram into one regiment. I think the mounted wight king is a bit overpriced compared to the lord, but he would let me take an extra HQ. I really need a foot hero to hang with the barrow guard foot wights, but the vamp is often zipping around using sanguine blur to assassinate people and raise skeletons in the backfield.

Oh well. I’m sure I’ll figure something out.

Hope everyone’s weekend is going well.

But running out of time. I already have a batch done for the comp, but was hoping for more. Still plugging away…

So yesterday the FLGS was trying out a new game mode he’s working on.

He wanted to capture the feel of crowded skies over an apocalypse game, pitched battle with flyers zipping everywhere. One VP per kill, or for each objective held at the end of your turn. The thought was that people could drift in and out over the day and join a side with what they had in an ongoing fight. Unfortunately that was not conveyed particularly well in the event post, which suggested a 1k list of nothing but things with the Fly keyword. Which folks like me who has been here forever could do, but would be real hard for most people. I could have also brought close to 1.5k in Eldar.

Everything DS’s, everything recycles back from the dead next turn if killed. Custom strats in addition to your army ones. Clouds are obscuring and scatter.

We played 5 turns, vs. a 1ksons guy who had a lot of stuff on disks and wings. Fun was had. I lost. We talked a bit about refining the mission and the strats. It was a good start, but needed some tweaks.

ready for black wash. Put down the last of the touchups before coffee this morning. Once that dries it will be nuln oil, red for the eyes, and basing. Hope to finish them today. Then I need to do some EoM pics. And a halftime report, as we are basically done with June.

Dire wolves done being built. Not a bad kit, but had some issues. One was sprue layout. Models used numbers that were close, but there was no rhyme or reason to how they could be found over the 2 sprues. So a lot of hunting for bits. Went together pretty well. I didn’t try, but many of the heads seem interchangeable. Some had a hole for the tounge, which was part of the body; not sure if those could be swapped. 2 small deviations from the instructions. One wolf should have had a bit on his back snacking on him, but the ultra-thin leg snapped on srpue before clipping, so I just cleaned the rest off and built without. One also had some twigs growing through him (a common theme with GW zombies) did not like, clipped and cleaned.

Also cleaned up a tombstone and sword as trophies. I suspect that the Path to Glory is nearing an end, and thought I might give some bits to my main opponent to toss on the alter/scatter on bases.

When everything is packed up to take down to the FLGS it can be easy to overlook how much I’ve gotten done this year:

How we doing?

I wrote:Here are my New Year’s resolutions:
1 Paint 12 members for the primaris battle company 1/12
2 Paint at least 24 Tyranids, and strive to keep them PoS neutral. 18/24
3 Paint more than I buy. 99/40
4 Paint at least 3 units that have been in the primed pile/Pile of Shame for 3+ years
5 Update my blog at least once a week, and maintain a consistent pace of work (1 mini a week).
6 Paint at least two units for 4 different factions. 7/8
7 Enter and finish an entry every month for the painting challenge. If the monthly challenge stops, enter at least one comp in the year.
8 Paint a tank. 0/1
9 Get more games in. At least 6. -Done

1 - way behind. With the AoP focus on soulblight, this is going to have to be a fall priority
2 - Doing good. Might be able to bang out the last of these in scrap times at the end of the months. Or a dedicated push to clear all the remaining nids
3 - Solid here. I’ve picked up a number of things, but am getting them painted.
4 - I got one cent done before the undead took over. Might miss this one this year. The fact that minis qualify for this goal means there is no motivation on them.
5 - Blogging good, painting well ahead of goal. Like almost 2x my goal at halftime. Progress harkening back to my 4 mini a week goal of my youth
6 - The only thing keeping this from being done is I’ve not done 2 units of nids, Painting 3 more termagaunts will check this off.
7 - Actually won a month. Entry record continues.
8 - Nope. This is going to have to happen at the end of the year. I guess I could start one in the background as they don’t take up space on the handles. I should do that.
9 - Rocking this one. While I do occassionally miss a weekend, I am getting down to the store weekly. And almost always find a game.

So overall doing pretty good. The cocmpany/tank goals are way behind, but we still have half the year left. Although I suspect those are going to be crammed into Q4

I took more pics of what I’ve been up to, but need to edit them. Will get them up later in the week. Some tomorrow at least for the comp.

Added some Dire Wolves to the AoP. Probably need to tweak things to keep it to a 2k list. Not that it’s required, but I’d like to do it.
