It seems like it should be since the emoticons kind of behave like .gifs.
Can someone tell me how to do it?

You need to wrap something in an image tag. Which would look like the following below: So if we apply that to the text box we have the following:  Awesomely enough the Dakka Logo is a .gif file, just not an animated one.

Please also note that while you can include gifs as part of a larger post (I love to do that), a post that consists of solely a gif or other image macro is considered spam and will be deleted by a moderator. You probably knew that but this seems like a good place to point it out if you perhaps did not.
