Hello, fellow Dakkas.
Just reading through the IG Codex, and it states that "Each Infantry Platoon counts as a single Troop choice on the force organisation chart when deploying, and is rolled for collectively when rolling for reserves."
Ok, so an Infantry Platoon is:
1 Platoon Command Squad
2-5 Infantry Squads
0-5 Heavy Weapons Squads
0-2 Special Weapons Squads, and
0-1 Conscript Squad
So, that's over 100 models, and made up of many 'Troop' units, but as the above comment states that an Infantry Platoon is counted as one Troop choice on the force organisation chart, does that mean that for Standard Missions that require a mandatory of 1 HQ unit and 2 Troop units you can't actually play with just 1 Infantry Platoon because you need 2 Troop units, and a whole Platoon, of 100+ models is only counted as 1 Troop unit?

Correct. If you take a full Platoon, it is a single FOC selection. Each part is a separate unit and acts independently though.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Each Platoon takes up 1 Troops slot, and yes, you need at least 2 Troops slots filled for a legal primary detachment. Of course, you can make a Platoon of as few as 25 guys, between the mandatory 5 man PCS and 2 mandatory 10 man infantry squads. You can field even fewer models using Veterans for your mandatory Troops, as then you could just have two 10 model Vet squads, without the need for a PCS.

Ok, thanks, guys.
Even so, that seems a tad harsh. I bring over 100 models to the yard, but it's not legal if they're in one Infantry Platoon.
But, as above, I guess that means that I can designate all of my Infantry Squads as Veteran Squads and get around it that'a way, if I wanted?

No.
If you do that, you will have PCS, HWS, SWS, etc loose without a legal platoon. You can remove the entire IP and replace it with Vets, yes.

It's a...little bit more than that - 2 CCS (with Astropath, 2 Bodyguard, MotO and OotF), 5 Priests, 2 Techpriests (5 Servitors each)- 37 models 3 Ratling squads with 10 models each (doesn't matter which) - 30 models 6 Full Platoons - 132 models each for 792 models 859 infantry models. Of course point-wise is ridiculous. You are looking at about 6200 with no upgrades....at that point you are either using double FOC so 12400 points and nearly 2000 infantry models or you are doing Apocalypse and it doesn't matter any more.

What's harsh? Why don’t you just organize your 100+ models so that they’re two Infantry Platoons? 25 dudes in one Platoon ( PCS + 2 Infantry Squads), and the rest in the second Platoon. Or however you like, as long as each Platoon has at least the minimum required sub-units ( PCS + 2 Infantry Squads).
Tower75 wrote:But, as above, I guess that means that I can designate all of my Infantry Squads as Veteran Squads and get around it that'a way, if I wanted?
A Platoon is one kind of Troops choice. A Veteran Squad is a different, separate kind of Troops choice. You can’t take Vet Squads as PART of an Infantry Platoon. You COULD take an Infantry Platoon as one Troops choice, and a Veteran Squad as your second Troops choice. Or two Platoons. Or two Vet Squads.

Welcome to the imperial guard, where our solution to every problem is to throw more men at it.
If you have a hole that needs to be filled, we will shove men into till you can walk on across. You need a flying pest brought down, well we will pile men on top of each other till we reach it with our bare hands. You are looking to see if you can cover every inch of a battle field with living bodies, we assure you that we can!
Don't like our men, why not try it with our tanks as we have lots of those too.

As an aside, since 6th edition dropped, are there even any more standard missions with the old Dawn of War deployment restrictions? I'm not saying we shouldn't be discussing it (it's a perfectly valid question) but for my own academic curiosity, is it even an issue anymore?

Anyone remember the Myth-busters episode where they tried for the 3rd time to prove/disprove Archimedes Death Ray? They lined up 500 volunteers with big mirrors and a targeting net to try to set an incoming ship on fire.
I was strongly reminded of every time I have ever tried to use combined IS squads to to shoot down some T6 W4 evil beastie coming my way
