I would adore some Dwarf mounted units in their new book (whenever that may be). Wanting to know your thoughts as well, I thought I would share mine. 1) No steam powered stuff, gear or animals, in my opinion. (This just applies to actual mounts, not the Gyro or some other tech the Engineers come up with- Steam Powered cannon shooter. Yeah it fires cannons which are firing cannon balls) 2) A bear would be the cooler of my 3 options, with the most offensive potential Rams would offer a cool mount, worried about copying Blizzard (Like they dont steal everything from each other) Oxen would be more original, make more sense than bears (much to my chagrin) with hauling tools, ore etc, and still be cool enough to model. Impact hits?! 3) An interesting idea, stolen directly from Blizzard (I wont even attempt to deny), would be Runic Giants as either their Monster or Monsterous Infantry. I mean, a Dwarfen Giant is probably the size of an ogre, right? 3W S4 T5 with options for a GW or AHW and a 4+ armor and maybe a 5+ ward for like, yuh know, Runes? that would be verry cool. 4) Give them Metal 'mages' (temporary term). Also Fire maybe would be cool. OR a better and canonical-er idea would be to give the Rune Lords/Heroes Rune abilities which work similar to the Warrior Priests' battle prayers in the Empire. Maybe these Rune Bros can buff other Runic units (RUNE GIANTS YOU GUYS!!!) That would be neat-o indeed. To this point I would add- So Dwarfs can use their Magic Phase for other than just MOAR DISPEL. I think I have a couple more, but I am at work so I will edit when they come to mind.....

-A war barrel. 1+ armor save. 2M. Can make a rolling charge with random movement 2D6 and Impact Hits D6. If you fail, minus -2WS and I (min of 1) from dizziness for a turn.
Bears don't live in caves except hibernating. Hibernating bears aren't extremely scary.

Please, no dwarves riding bears, that would look stupid.
I would prefer they get some steam powered vehicle to ride. Something chariot sized and something larger.
Steam driven version of the old empire war wagon would be good.

To the OP, I am with you I don’t want steam punk to take over the Dwarfs either. I think what they have steam wise is fine the gyro copter and the flame cannon. As for cavalry I don’t really thing that would work in the dwarf army. For me I like the idea of a chariot better something pulled by super tough mountain goats or something like that. I also think instead of cavalry they should be allowed to have units of gyro copters.
But honestly for what you are looking for you should play chaos dwarfs. They have mages that use their own lore or fire, metal and death. Chaos dwarfs also have bull centaurs which are way better than ogres but meet your stats, W4, S4, T5, 3W. They also have a 5+ scaly skin and can have heavy armour. The chaos dwarf characters can also ride the great Taurus. Also they can take chaos siege giants.
So there is no need to change dwarfs because chaos dwarfs has everything you are looking for. Plus with them you can go as steam punk as you like. If you are into steam punk buy the FW war machines. If you don’t care for steam power, buy the older style machines from eBay.

I would like to see soo much! And so much is needed!
I could see Cavalry. But I like the Automotans/Steam machines better. I also want to see more infantry choices that are better, Hammerers and Ironbreakers the same price but compete with each other through unique rules. Keep Hammerers with theirs, give them ASF first round, and give Ironbreakers a Shield Wall Rule with Killing Blow with a 2+ yes, 2+ save. It makes NO sense that the greatest armour in the world has the same armour save as Empire Full plate, why would Dwarves give it away? Then they will also be equivilant to most of the insane heavy cavalry now a'days.
Slayers need a 4+ invuln against shooting and magic shooting attacks when not in combat, and need to go down a point or so.
Where are the Great Cannons? The Dwarfs are the master engineers and smiths in the whole world, but dont seem like it. They should have a regular Cannon, Great Cannon, and gigantic Cannon that will destroy entire cities! Keep the Organ Guns, Grudge Throwers, Bolt Throwers. Also I would like to see a more mobile weapons platform of sorts, and a non-crappy Flame Cannon. Also better, optional squads of Gyropcopters would be excellent. Especially with different weapon attatchments, and maybe some Dwarf Gunners on the sides.
Chaos Dwarfs are lame and not real.... enough said there.
As for heavy units, I would like to see both Steam Centurions with variable weapons and abilites. As well as Runic Stone Golems who can use Runic/Magic attacks and possibly channel Runes through to enemy casters. As for the Runes themselves, only a few need changing, and I can see some being added in.

I know that O&G have boars but why couldn't Dwarfs also ride boars. I think that would be the coolest Cav. build yet ....A armored Dwarf riding a barded out war boar. Oh and have a light cav option ....riding goats(maybe). When I first started playing I was drawn to the dwarfs but after reading their fluff and looking at the models I found them to be rather boring. Line up, barricade yourself and blow the enemy away with cannons and then go finish off whats left. I really do hope they come out with a new book for the Dorf's  ! Oh and Dwarf pikemen ....as far as MC goes I would say elemental constructs would be very cool. I really don't like the steam punk influence they have given to the Dwarfs. And for rare's Berzerkers would an awesome addition in heavy spiked armor.

They could ride wooly rhinos...... But I agree, leave the steam power to the Empire. GW could refocus onto the Dwarfs coolest piece of fluff- their ancient Runic power and go that route, whilst maybe keeping the Engineering where it is at, or possibly introducing cooler and better black powder weaponry.
As to playing the Chaos Dwarfs- My post wasnt about finding an army to fit my ideas, though I appreciate the thought. I want to play Dwarfs because I enjoy who they are. I sincerely agree that CD do not exist on the tabletop, I dont care if Forge World resin'd up some rules for them. I dont really have interest in those little naysayers.

I wanted some variety so I moved to Chaos Dwarfs,
I have monsters, I have cav, I have useful infantry, I have a crazy warmachines =)

Never Cavalry for Dwarves but I could see them creating something along the lines of the Chas Dwarf Kdaai destroyer. A giant "titan" like monstrous creature made of metal would be pretty cool, could have all sorts of weapons and stuff

Well.. Actually Dwarfs have Rock giants and Rune golems but the craft for making them been lost before War of Vengeance and waking them up would require conclave of Runelords. But I am sure that GW finds a way to get them walking again and way for Dwarfs to start making them. If you fellows wondering where I got this information about the Giants and golems, it has been written in the War of Vengeance novel written by Nick Kyme, called The Great Betrayal which a great book in my opinion!

Citadel made a steam powered dwarven juggernaught before anyone even thought up the term steam punk. There is more to steam punk than just steam technology anyway.
They could still be warhammer dwarves and have more steam technology, the two ideas are not mutually exclusive. If they can make something that can fly on steam power thay could surely make a land based vehicle propelled by steam.
Some rumors are that GW is actually going to advance the timeline (Ill believe that when I see it though) and that could open up some options.

As cool as it would be see what cavalry ideas would be seriously considered, I always liked the idea of not having any. Just the solid line of muscle, gromril, iron and steel that stretches on forever. Readied with broad shields and great axes. Dwarves like the ground and the earth, maybe that's where they should stay. Except for of course the crazy Engineers who fly the Gyrocopters

Ok no lasers but the whole dwarves =/= no cav thing isn't really a big fluff 'we hate riding' thing, it's just that they haven't had them before.

The problem with dwarfs riding bears is that it would just result in a silly looking model. The disparity in size is too great and with their short legs they would just look like a human child perched up on top.

I would not mind seeing something along the lines of a fortified Wagon cart, with maybe two weapons that shoot Runic ammo something along the lines of the AoD, depending on what rune you launch, determines what type of attack (Magical, Flaming, ground Penetrating (Causes difficult terrain, slows a unit who is hit) Miss fire does different things. Or they ride pull carts as Cav/MC, fives Movement 5 or 6, nothing too big or fast. Also would not mind seeing some other type of Monster, those engineers are a little crazy, Like a walking fortress, I also think their Armor needs to be upgraded, If there is an army that would have 2+ or Even 1+ AS, it should be Dwarves, they are the best forgers in all the lands. They should also get a bump in Strength, no dwarf should be less that S4, they swing things all day long, their upper body would be quite strong.
Also, I like that Dwarves do not have access to the lore’s of magic, But they should be able to do something in the Magic phase, So what about they use the winds of magic to disseminate Brew. All Buffs, similar to a War Priest, I present Brew Masters who pass out the following brews. Drunken Brew: Remains in play 3,+ Unit takes a drink form the brew and is immune to Fear/Terror, can be passed out to all friendly unit within 12” but casting value is 6+. Oxen brew: 6+, unit gets +1S. Iron Forged Logger: 7+, Unit gets +1T. Stubborn Ale: 4+, Does what the name implies gives stubborn. Bugman’s Fire water: 6+, gives Flaming attacks. Forging Frenzy Malt: 8+, Unit gets to re-role hits. And because it is a brew after all, any time you role all ones. The unit gets Stupidity unit a successful Leadership test is passed done at the start of the next turn. Not sure on the casting values, but think this could be interesting.

It's called the anvil of doom and is done in the shooting phasenso can't be dispelled. Why's put it in the magic phase and nerd tht?

Exactly, Dwarfs don’t need magic. Runes are supposed to be more reliable than the winds of magic. If anything the anvil of doom should stay in the shooting phase and they should just add more runes.

I don't want to see either ott steam contraptions or dwarf cavalry. I could see light cannons on pony-pulled carts, rangers with bears or stags or what-have-you as animal companions, steam-driven weapons and guns, but nothing that's a vehicle and nothing that's cavalry.
