I also have a problem.

That problem is that I don't have enough models yet

Yeah, it'll fail.

Everyone says this. No one succeeds.

I'm succeeding at the moment. I currently have a grand total of 1 unpainted model. For infinity. I buy models I will use and I paint them so that I can use them (I don't use unpainted models) and I don't buy more until the ones I have are done. My 40k armies are painted - but they are also not getting added to and in storage until the rules suck less.

I used to have 40 unpainted guard infantry models. I gave them away. Whether he used them or dumped them into a skip I know not and care less. They are no longer mine, so no longer count.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

I've just sold a load of boxed space wolves stuff that I've had for two years as my wife wanted a clearout.
I raised £140.
Which incidentally, happens to be the cost of about 2 wraithknights...

I used to have a problem with spending too much money on 40k. But then, after I went to buy a thing of plastic glue for the hundreds of dollars of models I'd bought in previous weeks, only to discover that I had not enough money... I set myself a reasonable budget and stuck to it. Haven't had financial issues since.

On a more serious note, yeah, I definitely would say I have a problem with buying models. I'm not really sure it's fair to call it an addiction, but that's probably not the discussion we're trying to get into here. The biggest difficulty I have is that there aren't any negative consequences to me going overboard on hobby spending beyond guilt, anxiety (from having yet more stuff to paint and store), and putting less money into savings. Of course, over-spending is a common problem in the hobby and people tend to joke about it more than anything (heck, even I did it earlier in the thread) which hardly helps address the problem.

My problem is I'm more impressionable than wax.

I get fixated on trying a new tactic/squad and then go out and buy it.
I don't plan what painting is going to get done and buy accordingly, I just buy it and then put it in a cupboard.

I wouldn't buy a console game and then not play it, so why do I do it with 40k?
I've had an eldar cobra mk2 in my 40k cupboard for about 3 years now. I've a storm eagle thats been there nearly as long.
Still boxed. Bought for my wolves (which I'm selling off)
In the meantime, I've almost finished my entire chaos army.

So why did I feel the need to invest in other armies while I did it?

Books don't help. I read soul hunter - now I have a nightlord lord, a squad of nightlords chosen, a dreadnought, 2 heldrakes and 10 termies. The storm eagle I've decided to steal for my chaos for termies and was also going to be NL. Now I've had it long enough to sell the army I originally bought it for.
Now eldar are being released. So they're going to be my focus - meaning the storm eagle is still going to be left on the side. I really wanted that storm eagle at the time too...

An addiction is something that impedes your life in some way. While buying models may be an EXPENSIVE hobby it doesn't really mean you're addicted.

I have an absolute ton of models I've collected over the years and intend to continue to buy more. It's just what I enjoy to do with my money. Also, it does depend on income since a college student buying my collection may be deemed an addiction if you have to go into massive debt.

Send those termis my way, I'll give them a good home ;D

But seriously, the models I would get tended to be about 2-3 boxes a year if I was lucky, then came getting my first job and my own card to buy things online and before I knew it I have 3 squads of chaos models and some blood angels Death Company collecting dust as I finish off the last of my Ultramarines for a competition...

As I am supposed to be saving for university next year my model buying habits have become non existent since these outbursts of cash and I have been able to keep my spending to little if nothing at all... mostly becasue I think I may be slightly OCD when it comes to finishing my models before moving on to another, only to find that I dont like how I painted those previous models so I try to redo them.

My current projects list includes 252 models. Most don't have any paint on them yet. I've only finished 4 or 5 models this year so far. At the rate I paint, I have a 20 year inventory (not too terrible, it took me 31 years to build it up!)

There's only a couple I would sell off, though. I mostly buy any models that I really like, and then later on as I paint them I try to figure out how to use them in armies.

Those of you who have commented on my army lists probably already knew that.

I found out I had a problem almost on the lines of an addiction when I moved. I didn't realize how many models I owned until I organized everything for the move. I stopped buying models in general and then the new Tau came out... I promised myself not to get something I was not going to incorporate in my army at the time of purchase and for a while that was working. My birthday recently came up and so my friends pitched in and showered me with more Tau models then I can shake a stick at which started the model collecting itch all over again.... I am doomed.

I have the same problem. I buy them, then I set them aside for "another day". I have a strong collection impulse and completionist tendencies (i.e. if I start an army, I have to buy everything I need to play it ASAP, instead of buying it piecemeal and getting them ready for the tabletop first). Thats what really screws me over is my seemingly impulsive need to have everything I want/need immediately, combined with my tendency to go overboard and build really large armies, and my inability to focus on one army for more than a couple weeks at a time.

My problem is, I don't buy models one or a few at a time. When I buy models.. I tend to buy whole armies at a time. My new nid army started as a I'll get a few units to try them.. to a 2000pt army purchase.

Definitely addicted to buying models, but right now I'm trying to be good and get rid of stuff I'm not using, before my move. Pinching a cheap thrust by saying I have Space Hulk termies on eBay for you buying addicts.

I am addicted. I have thousands of points of NIB plastic sitting in my office.

I am getting ready to build a house so I have to curb my spending habits quite a bit.

Some how its a lot harder to get addicted to painting. Which is what I need right now lol.

Well I wouldn't say I am addicted at all. I haven't bought any models in a while, although I only have about 1000 points of fully painted space marines.

I told myself when I bought dark vengeance that I wouldn't play a game until I painted every space marine (dark angels that I converted to vanilla). I have actually stuck to that goal and bought a few more to make 1000ish points then now they are all painted.

I still have the whole Chaos side unpainted but put together unglued just because I wanted to see what they looked like. I am not a fan of them (my paint skills are also not up to the task). SO I am going to sell them to someone and put it towards new models.

I am certainly addicted to dreaming about buying new models though. Right now I want to buy the Tau battle force or a Tau army. I also want to get an Eldar army to but this is because I like the look of both of them so I am trying not to be impulsive about buying them cause thats 150 bucks that im not sure if I want to spend.

As for my lord of the rings models. I bought some metal Haradrim Command and put the bases on....still not painted or even primed and I have about 40 unpainted lord of the rings minis I probably wont paint. I don't even play that game I just painted them when I was younger because I was into lord of the rings and didn't have a job for a lot of models.

Now I just try and restrain from impulse buying because I might end up with 30 tau or eldar models that will be half painted and out $150 haha
