Subject: Question about Grenades

Hey fellas, I have a few questions about grenades during the shooting and assault phases.
I have the little rule book in front of me, and I see the bit where it says one model in a unit can throw a grenade instead of firing its weapon. My question is: when you declare you're throwing the grenade, do you use the BS of the model throwing, or is it an automatic hit?
And my questions about grenades during the assault phase are: 1) does a model have to be in base contact with a vehicle if its planting a grenade such as a meltabomb or haywire grenade? and 2) can a whole unit plant grenades during the assault phase, or just 1 model? For example, a unit of 5 warp spiders assaulting a monolith. Do they all get to use their haywires, or just one warp spider?
Thanks in advance, and sorry if the questions are silly.

1) When thowing a grenade use the model's BS to resolve whether the grenade hits or not.
2) In an assault involving a vehicle or MC, any model armed with a grenade may forgo its attacks and attempt to use a grenade regardless of grenade type. The only restriction being that the model must be able to make said close combat attacks.
For example, models more than 2" from base to base would not be able to make any close combat attacks including the optional grenade attack.

In the shooting phase the grenade-throwing is a shot and resolved as such (to hit rolls/scatter, etc...)
In the assault phase if a model could have struck against the vehicle/MC it can do a single attack using a grenade instead
Last thing, your example's odd, watch out .

Thanks guys. The only thing is I'm wondering why my example is odd?

The fact that you ask questions about grenades while mentionning one that doesn't have any. You surely meant Swooping Hawks, but it could puzzle someone not knowing the 'dex.

is there a threat that explains how to utilize Grenades as a whole ? I been trying to figure out why each Nob/Boy in the Ork army can have one paid for while the rulebook I belive states that only ONE out of an entire unit can use it ....

Grenades have other uses than just throwing them. In fact in 5th you couldn't throw them at all, it's purely a bonus for 6th that you don't pay any more for than you were already paying for the static benefits.

There are 5 potential uses of a grenade (depending on the specifics). 1. Throw it during shooting against anything. A single model forgoes it's normal shooting attack to lob one. They are typically short range so it tends to be useful just prior to performing an assault. Some are based on your BS; some use scatter dice. 2. Throw it during assault against vehicles. Any (or all) model in the unit can use a grenade instead of their normal CC attacks. Note that the model only gets 1 attack with a grenade regardless of other bonuses. If that Nob has 3 normal attacks he still only gets to throw a single grenade. 3. When being assaulted (defensive only) - if you are charged the attacker doesn't get their bonus attacks. 4. When Assaulting (assault only) - don't suffer penalty when charging through cover. 5. Overwatch - Throw one instead of making a normal shooting attack as long as the grenade is not a blast weapon. For more info and specifics: page 61 - 62 So.. the reason you pay for every model in a unit to carry grenades deals with items 3 and 4 above. If the specific grenade they are carrying can be used in the shooting or CC phase then it's essentially a bonus thing. As pointed out by Miri two posts down, there may be codex specific grenades, like the Tau one, which open up additional options.

Wait, is your number 2 the fact that ,against vehicles and monstrous creatures you get to plant grenades? You make it sound like you can use it against any target.

You forgot one, Tau Photon Grenades (Defensive Grenades) can be thrown during an enemy units shooting phase so long as the throwing unit is 8" or less away and have not gone to ground. They would then receive the Stealth special rule (handy when sitting behind an ADL and are getting shot at before the charge).

You may throw a single grenade during OW, so long as the target is within 8", since OW follows all normal rules for shooting. Amusingly, this is how my Coteaz has died before, leading the charge: Str6 Krak rolls a 6 to hit, rolls a 2+ to wound T3, and I fail my Artificer save Psyber eagle: "Oooo, shiny; master, look what I found!" Coteaz: "What's thi--oh, crap" *BLAM*

He had a 2+ save, and that was better than the MEQ squad he was with. Once I failed the save, it was too late to LOS!
