Joey was kind enough to help me out and give me some content for my new Blog, that I have no idea what im doing with. She is a true superstar.

Never heard of her. Anything to it besides her being an attractive female who has been into Warhammer for just over a year and making some YouTube videos?

Whether she is attractive or not is subjective and irrelevant. It's nice to hear the thoughts of a female gamer. I think it's a great thing that she is making youtube videos to promote the hobby. I think a lot of would-be female gamers are put off by the instant objectification that can see clearly be seen whenever female hobbyists are being discussed.

Actually, it is of some significance, like it or not. She's certainly a lot more attractive than I am, so she immediately has more interest to/from the average male gamer than, say, you or I do. (ie more hits, attention, etc). And hey, she's got the makeup going, so she's working it. It seems disingenious to pretend it's not there.

Having said that, I don't hold anything against her for being female nor attractive. I'm wondering who she is and why I should care about an interview from her. I did read the written stuff, and all it really said was that she's been in the hobby for just over a year, and so it makes me wonder why she's interesting enough to interview, and why "She is a true superstar".

All I can see from the interview (my cable speed is capped atm - so no video viewing) is that she's a girl, attractive, has been gaming/painting for a very short time, and does some dress-up/cosplay in her videos. Which is, you know, not so exciting.

I'm not even meaning to insult or beat up on her. I'm really just asking who is she and what has she done/why should I care - because the interview didn't really tell me anything.

I had a look at some of her blogs a year or so ago and in essence it is a pretty bog standard "I'm new to this, what do I do, this is what I found out, here's my progress" type affair. What makes them different is her perspective and that she has quite a charming and irreverent personality. I put the emphasis on her as I haven't seen any other V-blog by women and to me this adds a valuable bit of diversification to the gaming community.

That said I haven't actually taken the time to look for any female perspectives since my lead there was from Joey's project log here on Dakka and since I don't really care for V-blogs generally there could be hundred of women posting wargaming blogs for all I know.

Why should you care, that's up to you. As I say for a number of reasons I found her to be engaging. Certainly I don't think it was for any prurient reasons but I won't pretend that Joey isn't a darn sight better on the eye than the usually chunky bearded folk that tend to do these things.

I kinda think the same as notprop - occasionally interesting, but I've been playing this game for a long time and I don't really get a lot of new insight from the posts. But I could say that about a lot of wargaming podcasts/blogs, etc.

ALSO, shameless plug, Joey and a friend of mine are starting a new wargaming group down in Gillingham, Kent - we spent bank holiday building tables and the first club day is this Sunday. Dakka thread here - http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/527298.page

Indeed - when I do a video series, I wear my standard oil--and-cheetos-stained wifebeater and don't even bother to wipe to chocolate smears off my face.

She had some kind of crowdfunding thing IIRC to get her blog off the group. I haven't really watched it much since it's not my niche, but the people who do like wargaming videos on here seem to think it was OK.

I vaguely remember an entertaining series on the lores of magic, as well as a battle report of her playing malifaux against another youtube personality and it actually made me want to play that game enough to search out other battle reports and buy my first figure.

She's quite engaging and funny is what I've taken from those videos, and doesn't take things too seriously, as opposed to other gamers on youtube who seem to think things are the worst thing that ever happens/when they are losing it is the end of the world. And though I don't know Malifaux well, I didn't notice too many rule errors, which is always a plus compared to the group I often find myself watching (miniwargaming)

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

Good to hear she's still going! I had seen a lot about her (and she was even posting on Dakka!) when the crowdfunding campaign (I believe IndieGoGo) happened a bit ago (maybe a year or more). I wasn't sure if it had panned out but if she's still making videos I guess it is

I don't dislike the lass, if people want to watch her thats their business, It just makes me sad that she doesnt really do anything, but we men are so silly that women can essentially make a living by being good looking and nothing else. I mean, Joey isn't particularly nice looking, but she isn't fat or dog rough, and she looks like she has a bath at least once a fortnight, so I reckon thats flying with the eagles in our hobby.

My point is, I actually know who she is, despite little interest, and if she was called Joe and had a set of plums, but said the exact same stuff, none of us would know anything about him. The content of her videos is entirely consistent with any other hobby noob, she isnt a comic genius or a design visionary.

Think about it, the countless thousands of women that are in mens mags and page three and such, they are well off simply because they look nice! How is that a talent? And why does it piss feminists off that they earn a pretty penny for doing very little work?

At least fethers like Brad Pitt are famous for acting, and they happen to look nice, but there are tons of women (Kardashian, Jodan etc) that have literally no talent and are famous for looking nice, despite the fact that millions of chicks look nice. If a militant feminist thinks that Kim Kardashian would be better off as a male bricklayer working 40 hours a week in the rain, they really need to reevaliate who gets the best deal here, the brickie with the sore back, or Kim, with the bulging bank account because men are dumb enough to fawn over her!

This is a long winded way of me saying that I wish I was a woman, because I would shameless get my baps out at every opportunity, strip naked at the drop of a hat, and get a job in the shop on a Royal Marine base so I could get plugged with alarming frequency by any and every 18-35 year old male that came within 500 yards of my store/shag lair.

So you would be a short (probably) hairy strumpet that works in a shop and gets her norks out with little provocation . So basically the perfect 10-2-2 bird.

Matty I am seeing you in a whole new light.

Have you ever been to Dukes or Reds in Chelmsford there is something frighteningly familiar about all this?

Haha, yes, I would be the ugliest hairiest woman this side of the channel. I would be a kebab shop pick up for the vast majority of men, safe only for the famously easy, so thats military personnel and wargamers

Although, I am very proud and masculine, so in order to be allowed to mount me I would have to be goaded with a boxing glove duct taped to the end of a broom shank for an hour in order that you assert your dominance prior to buying me a bottle of Babycham and having your way.

Mattrym, you are a seriously crude individual. You come off as misogynistic, and far be it from me to educate you, but don't think that you speak for me when you say "we men" and "none of us". Alright, you can't seem to get past her appearance, too bad for you. Imagine this: she is a person who actively promotes the hobby, likely putting a positive image out there for other women who may be interested in the hobby. If a person was to do a google search for women + wargaming, I should hope that they would find one of Joey Berry's video's video at the top of the page rather than a link to a thread with some ignorant guy spouting of about how women should behave.

I did try to get back into watching her youtube videos, with her trip to adepticon, which was done over 3 videos. I was fairly annoyed at it consisting of her basically socializing and talking about doing girly stuff, going out to dinner and learning the rudiments of warmahordes with wargamergirl (who is actually someone who's videos I entirely enjoy, because she's about the games and is about a well constructed and presented video rather than rambling about being a girl and isn't it interesting that I'm a girl and did I mention I'm a girl in this male hobby!).

If I was one of the sponsors/kickstarter investors who'd paid for that trip to adepticon and the equipment to film it, I'd have been pissed at Joey, because there was just no bloody content.

Where was the 'what lists are doing well at 40k'?

Where was the views in the gaming halls?

Where were the rows and rows of amazingly painted minis.

Even going to possibly the largest event of it's kind on the planet, joeyberry still managed to make several long videos of just her talking into the screen with little to no content. It was a big waste of opportunity and felt more like a vehicle for self promotion than a report or documentary.

And mate, seriously, she isn't a superstar. I know it's exciting to meet a girl who wargames, but that sort of comment and the fawning comments I've read on her youtube make me fething cringe, it's creepy and the perfect example of positive discrimination that belies the quiet sexism. If she wants to wargame, welcome her as an equal and friend, if she gets good enough to talk with authority on the games, listen and appreciate what she's saying and when she's writing the books, sculpting the minis or painting like Jen Haley, then you can call her superstar, till then, she's a seemingly nice person with some youtube videos that, for me, lack decent content.

@ AesSedai.

To be fair attractiveness is relevant in visual media. You might not like it but it is relevant.

You might not like the language used by Matty but he does strike a pertinent point; in a mostly male saturated environment standards may be forgotten resulting in fapping over the first female that roll on the scene. Just look at the furore over the woman that is part of the WD team for example.

If someone wanted to objectify women and seek out examples of perfection there are better places to look than Wargaming websites.

Also Matty is sometimes crude, usually to the point but always entertaining. I see nothing wrong in his post nor his and my silly banter. Lighten up mate.

Yeah Im not actually misogynistic, I was merely trying to be funny. Failing obviously, but they can't all be good ones eh?

The root point was entirely reasonable though, all joking aside... see MGS post.

Namely, I think her stuff is ok from what little I have seen, but it seems to be less about good content, and more about the fact she is a girl. As I said, I very much doubt that a man (I wasn't aware she did a Kickstarter, but I would expect it, good on her for taking advantage of peoples desire to see her at a con) who made similarly content devoid videos would have achieved funding for a jolly to a convention.

But yeah, I was just having a craic, the majority of posters find my somewhat crude jocular attempts at humor worth reading, and Melissia is a poster that could be described as being a feminist, and I certainly find myself in agreement with her 90% of the time. I would ask you to lighten up and simply accept the fact that me joking that I would be very slutty and hairy if I was a woman was in no way derogatory to women if read in the spirit that it was intended.

Notprop, I'll concede that attractiveness may be relevant in some visual contexts. That's a good point.

Mattrym's post was utterly disrespectful. Cool, you think objectifying women is light-hearted humour. Don't debase yourself, I know you know better. You mention that our hobby is mostly male and yet, you seem to ignore the value of a young women actively promoting the hobby in visual media. The WD staff member cluster-feth was more of the same.

Overall, I can't agree with you. You think I should lighten up and I think you should wise up. The world is full of people making objectifying remarks. It's demoralizing. Most misogyny is institutional and unintentional, but when some dude starts up with "well at least she ain't fat or a dog" maybe it's just meant as a compliment and we should move on tralalalala.

Well, while I more or less agree with everything you said, I will point out that being a "wargaming superstar" isn't like a super high bar, right? I mean, this is a pretty niche community. We only have like, 2 dozen superstars, period.

WOW, Superstar is a saying I use for someone that has done me a good deed, not the fact i think she deserves a gold star in Hollywood. With Joey Posting the interview for me on here page this then lead to the wargaming consortium posting it as well. And then Chung also posted it on his private page, causing my New Blog to get 978 hits in 2 hours. I approached Joey for an interview as she is approachable. And down to earth as well. I would of asked the guys from Miniwargaming Shaun from BTP or even Chung him self, if i thought that they might be the tiniest bit interested, or that they could be approached at all.

And the Sexual discrimination in here is beyond belief and is the exact reason why my GF wont step foot in a hobby shop with me, as most of the guys in there start fapping at the mere site of a women in the flesh, as most of time the only women they get to touch come in the blow up kind or in Blister packs. Joeys vids provide light humor. I don't see any of you operating a succesfull youtube channel? Or asked to work on the new ROME II game?

I still stand by my view that singling out female war gamers (bloggers) for objectification is no different that singling out gay gamers, hygienic gamers, or any other minority.

Mate, how is me saying "If I was a woman I would be proper ugly and hairy but a right slag" objectifying women? Its objectifying men, because I specifically said that men are stupid, and we lap gak up if it contains attractive women. Also, saying that war gamers are fat and smelly was simply playing off the unfair stereotype, which we obviously know isn't true, but its totally sex-free, wargamers are like any other gamers, they can be male or female.

I don't think you understand what objectifying is, because I didn't objectify women, I objectified men.

In several ways actually.. for example, I indicated that all men are obsessed with sex and would be slutty if they were female, and I said that men are more likely to be interested in things or buy things if fit women are selling them. Surely that demeans men, and not women?

Yeah we can agree to disagree, I can see your point, I'm just saying I certainly don't think of myself as misogynistic, as I said, I was intending to poke fun at hairy one dimensional men like me, not women.

Though as I said, I do think Joeys videos and youtube channel do better because of her sex rather than her content, but each to their own. I certainly concede that many men do better in jobs because of their sex, but we are just talking about this one social media issue, and in that regards, I definitely believe that you have a greater chance of success as a woman than a man.

Its probably a good equalizer mind, considering men have the upper hand in most walks of employment.

This, some of the comments in this thread are pretty disgusting. The way she looks is entirely up to her, if anyone is watching her videos just because she is attractive then that is their problem, not hers. Kudos to her for speaking out on a hobby she is clearly passionate about that is traditionally male dominated.
