Does Dakka have any recommendations for games that are good for two players?

Dominion (all the parts of Magic(TG) that I like, with none of the rarity etc. making it about how many good cards you own. I think it also scales really well between 2-6 players)
Sedition Wars (though it's still got some bugs, I think the actual gameplay is very nice and has been improving)

Coop:
1. Arkham Horror. Both players can even play 2 characters and still have fun.
2. Pandemic. This game is pretty tough, but very fun.
3. Gears of War board game. Cool minis, fun game. Can get lethal very quickly.
4. Elder Sign. Faster paced dice version of Arkham Horror.
5. Atlantis Rising. After losing 1 out of the first 3 games, we haven't lost since.
Competitive:
1. Gloom. Silly card game that goes fairly quickly.
2. TransAmerica. Connect your 5 cities with rail roads before you opponent does. Another fast game.
Arkham Horror, in my experience, had some pretty terribly unbalanced scenarios. Also, unless I'm mistaken, at 2-player it's solely competitive (I thought someone was always the GM)
I have heard awesome things about Summoner Wars. Lots of people say it plays like a boardgame, but with cards. Also, tons of armies available.
"By this point I'm convinced 100% that every single race in the 40k universe have somehow tapped into the ork ability to just have their tech work because they think it should."
Fantastic. This shall give us enough of a purchase list for quite awhile!
Thanks!

The Master set of Summoner Wars is about 40 dollars online, and has six separate factions in it. Then there's something like 10 other factions, plus reinforcement decks for each faction, too. Completely non-collectible.
I also second Claustrophobia. Not only is it kind of a fantasy Space Hulk feel, but the best part is that you can freely download 20 scenarios for the base game from the company's website.
Then it's also got a good-sized expansion.

Competitive? I have no idea what you're talking about. Also, GM? There's no GM in Arkham Horror. What game are you talking about?
I agree that some Ancient One and Herald combinations are completely unbalanced, though.

Sort of. I don't have it, but I have been scouting it out for some time and hear it's really great. Each player has a hand of cards that are either spells or units. But there is also a gridded board the two players fight over, which represents a battlefield where some units are initially deployed (each race's summoner has a unique initial deployment setup) and can also be summoned from the hand to the board over the course of the game. When the units are on the board, it's almost like a miniatures game, with ranged/melee combat, movement, and units being able to take multiple hits of damage.
This in an old review (there are now 16 factions you can play as).

Mansions of Madness has to be what Spirallingcadaver is referring to. it is basically Arkham Horror with miniatures, storyline, and GM, so yes one of the two players ends up GM. Arkham Horror is the fully co-op game, in Arkham, no minis, with an AI system to move monsters.
I prefer Arkham Horror so far for two players.
Final edit - Forgot to mention! Ticket to Ride seems to work pretty well for 2 players.
edits- its late, I'm tired

I am a big fan of Netrunner (or "Android: Netrunner" as it's known now). It's like what Magic the Gathering could have been. They were both made by the same guy and he has said he finds Netrunner to be a far superior game.
The current version is also kind of "half collectable". Just imagine magic but the booster packs aren't random.
It also has completely different game mechanics for the two players, making for some very asymetrical games where you need to be good at multiple sets of rules to win.
If you can't tell, I like it a lot.
