Just enquiring as to what i should bring...

Im making both of the lists

I want the Necron list to be a fairly solid, non-competative list that should defeat the Chaos list but not too easily.

I would appreciate assistance as my usual lists are semi-competative (IE fun, but will not get steamrollered every time)

Chaos Demons or CSM? Actually, I know squat about either codex.

For an intro game to Necrons, here's one possible list.

Overlord (WS, MSS, SW, PS)
Royal court
VeilTek
StormTek
Lightning Tek

5x Deathmarks (Veiltek here)

5x Warriors (StormTek)
10 x Gauss Immortals (LightningTek, Overlord)

8 x Scarabs

1 x Anni Barge.

No flyers, mix of units all fun to play.

If you want flyers or something else, more details would be good (what models you have for instance).

I have almost everything useable in the Necron codex (bar Wraiths, I hate the models, and Deathmarks)

I have access to pretty much any unit in the Chaos book as well, and I mean CSM

No deathmarks, no wraiths.

Overlord (WS, MSS, SW, PS)
Royal court
StormTek
Lightning Tek

5x Warriors (StormTek)
10 x Gauss Immortals (LightningTek, Overlord)

6 x Scarabs

1 x Anni Barge.
2 x Spyders

is this sort of what you were thinking?

Is CSM the codex with Plague Marines? From what I read, if you are taking those the list I posted will have real problems as there isn't enough shooting and not enough CC.

You may need to take another AB and split the Immortal squad (or dump the spyders).

Ok, so if you're more than 5 plague marines in the CSM list, swap the spyders for another Anni barge (or, better still, a night scythe). Split the immortals, make one lot Tesla (these will walk) and the other lot can go in the scythe.

Well, what ive got is this:

Necrons:

Overlord
Phase Shifter, Sepiternal Weave, Res Orb
Lord
Phase Shifter, Sempiternal Weave, Res Orb

2x 10 Warriors

Monolith

Stalker, TL HGC

CSM

Lord
Twin Lightning Claws, Sigil of Corruption, Bike, Mark of Nurgle, Gift of Mutation

(2x) 10 Marines, 2 Meltaguns, Gift of Mutation, Lightning Claw

Maulerfiend
DakkaPred

idea is the Lords tank shots, keeping the warriors alive no matter what I throw forward, while reanimating any that do fall. all the while, the Stalker and Mono are just hitting and dropping Pies

Chaos is designed to show the need of target priority. The Maulerfiend + Lord *will* do damage if they hit the Necron line, so they need to take them out, while the Meltaguns will kill the vehicles, so they are also high priority targets.
the Predator is just because put some bullets in the air.

The list is designed to be a heavy balance in the Necron's favour, with a lot of 3+ save marines in the open to a decent amount of firepower.

What does dakka think?

I would make both armies balanced as evenly as you can. I get that you are letting your intro friend pilot the necrons, but what if he really likes the look of the CSM. Ideally you want him to pick the army he likes the most, and still be able let him get a hard fought victory over you. That will be the best way you can get him hooked!

First, its a she

secondly, Im not entirely sure how to go about that considering its her first game ever. Im gonna teach her the basics with this list, where she should win, then guide her through the 'army selection' fiasco

The Necron list doesn't seem that interesting, tbh. There isn't a lot of variety - its basically a gunline. If you think that she'll like that then go for it.

All im trying to do is show her the basics. For instance, my usual list involve a lot more fast moving units, a lot more firepower and a lot more complicated stuff. Im trying to keep things simple for her.

Necron Variety gets complicated fast to a new player

Yeah but still that's only if you want to play competitive, and you only want to be teaching your friend how to play the basics first, in which case just use anything you like (bar the really competitive options) I would suggest only using one ten man unit with standard weapons for each player as you only want to teach her the basics and fast enough that she will not get bored.

Night Lords (40k): 3500pts
Klan Zaw Klan: 4000pts

I would agree witht this post. I think its important that you have some bad ass characters in the game. MSS + Scythe Necron Lord vs Juggernaut + Axe of Blind Fury Chaos Lord. That way no matter which army she likes best there is an awesome character in it who can hold his own in the heat of battle.

I would also look into taking a Ghost Ark for the necrons. The transport rules aren't too difficult to learn, and are an important part of the game to understand. Furthermore, it can be used to get back more Necrons, which is cool.
