But that was 10,000 years ago. By now all of those original fighters would have long since died of old age, much less battle. Without a reliable way of restocking themselves, these splinter groups would have long since vanished.

Not to say that there aren't CSM who believe what they're doing is for the betterment of mankind, but in those cases they see the imperium as being the disease, which still makes them traitor marines.

Whose to say they couldn't keep stock of themselves? And whose to say they don't still exist in their human operatives?

Gods? There are no gods. Merely existences, obstacles to overcome.

I deeply love the idea, strategy, and fluff for the Alpha Legion and I like to think they are all still fighting for The Emperor. However prudence says that maybe the cells left under primarchs, senior officers, etc might still be loyal, and there may be loyal cells left otherwise, but some most probably went rogue after being hunted by The Imperium for so long however I do remember alot of fluff saying the Alpha Legion itself never entered the warp/eye of terror. Staying in Imperial territory and passing on knowledge for summoning daemons etc to cults they created.

I like to think the best of my top-3-tied legion and believe in the cells still devoutly loyal to The Emperor are fighting for him, and whether their plan is still overthrow Imperial Rule or (this was my personal idea) perhaps launch raids on chaos forces as well as Imperial. I remember reading an old source that said a small Alpha Legion force or member had sown some chaos, mistrust etc in a chaos warband that ultimately led to Imperial victory in the sector. Something along those lines. I like to believe the majority stayed true and still fight for humanity.
