I don't know why, but every time anyone talks about generation differences all I can think about is this gem from Grampa Simpson:

Yeah, but then you forget that we're advancing technology all the time. We will invent life extending drugs specifically for you.

Why? So that when the boomers have left this world a desolate, resource deprived wasteland for younger generations, we will be able to keep you connected to machines to keep you alive through it until the poor demand to eat you.

Shrike you of all people should know that music can easily transcend generation differences.
Frankly music is a perfect example of the previous generation being bastards about the younger generation having something they don't get.
When rock and roll first became big the generation before hated it. They claimed it wasn't real music and it was causing the downfall of society.
Society is still here, little bit different but the better for it I think.

I am fairly naive when it comes to original attitudes towards music from before I was born, but I think today's criticism towards popular music is more towards the use of autotune and how corporation-oriented the industry is, which is much more valid than how I imagine music from the 50's to 80's was received by older generations.

though of course, this is entirely based on my view of things, and people in 30 year's time may well view our criticism of current music as we view previous criticism of older music.

The industry has been corporation oriented since the 1920's...
Music is an industry. It exists to make money.
I imagine people said the same thing about the electric guitar as they did about autotuning when it first came about.
My point is the elder generation didn't like the popular music of the younger generation. This is happening now and it happened then. Back then the elder generation thought the younger generation were probably d-bags and they did have a go at them for it. Guess what happened then?
The younger generation grew up and had kids. Then they thought the generation below them were d-bags and it keeps going forever and ever.

I know the industry's focused on making money, of course it is, but you just don't get things like free concerts any more- not every little thing was about making money.
If you listen to Bob Dylan's concert in Manchester (IIRC), he used an electric guitar and you can hear the fans booing at him. My point was not that older generations didn't complain, but that I think the current complaints about modern music are more reasonable- an electric guitar still requires skill to play whether you like the sound of it or not- autotune does not.
and I'm on your side with the whole "circle of life" whereby older generations will always regard younger generations as d-bags, and it will likely go on forever.

fething awesome.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

No he said Duchy, not Douchey, therefore we are clearly discussions noble title and hereditary lands amongst the current generation of well to do Europeans where such things still exist.

Nobody is perfect so quit trying to act superior. I look at all generations and see the good and bad. Sometimes we focus too much on the negative attributes of certain groups of people and not enough on the positives, blinding us from acknowledging the good things they do and the challenges they face. Guidance is far better than cynicism, if you truly believe that the current generation is 'douchey' or 'broken' then give them a helping hand, share your wisdom and acknowledge the good things they do.
