If you want to "prove" anything, I'd rather point to various statements from the game designers and novel authors themselves rather than some user poll - especially given that many fans still seem resistent to accepting them, instead preferring the urban rumour of there being an official canon of fluff, especially as popular sources such as Lexicanum still propagate it. I did so myself for a long time just because it was how other fans explained it to me as I first joined the hobby ... until I noticed all the contradictions and started to dig for the
actual word from those people who
have to know.
Just point your friend to
this collection of quotes, and feel free to browse the sources linked to each statement - the one from Aaron Dembski-Bowden (who, in case the name does not ring a bell, is a fairly popular Black Library author) in particular is fairly enlightening, as he posted lengthy explanations on this subject here in a thread on dakka.
Long story short, there is no canon in the sense that there is some sort of "truth" in one of the books. It's all just interpretations and visions and legends and myths, and it is up to you as the individual gamer to decide for yourself how your
40k looks like. I myself have a "rule" that I regard anything from
GW as true for my
personal interpretation of the setting, and anything else is just optional and would be added to my vision only if it fits - but that's just how I see it, and it's no more true or correct than someone elses interpretation from some
BL novel or a Forgeworld book. The same applies in reverse, of course, which is why ultimately your someone is incorrect.
FW and
BL fluff only overrides Codex material if the individual fan wants it.
In a way, we all have our own little
40k. See Gav's quote.
