Just updated my avatar with a quick doodle, and it got me wondering if there are any other pipe smokers on dakka, or any other enjoyers of tobacco, be it pipes, cigars, roll-your-own cigarettes, hookah, etc.
I myself enjoy pipe smoking. There's definitely an art to it that other forms of smoking tobacco lack, in my opinion. Getting the hang of packing a bowl correctly and smoking it evenly all the way through on a single light is surprisingly difficult.
I've got two pipes currently; a corn cob pipe that I use as my everyday/beater pipe, and a 1969 Kaywoodie Campus briar pipe, which I actually bought UNSMOKED from ebay a few months back for 20 bucks. It's gorgeous, and I've yet to begin breaking it in; I'm saving it until I've gotten skilled enough that I know I won't mess it up.
I use to roll my own cigs, and I've developed a taste for bali shag, so I'll occasionally smoke that in my pipe, despite the fact that it's technically a cigarette tobacco. My favorite pipe tobacco as of right now is Admiral's Choice natural cavendish, though I haven't explored many different blends yet.
Of course, I also enjoy cigars, hookah, etc, but pipes are my current tobacco fascination at the moment. When smoking cigars I generally prefer milder ones, my favorite Macanudo's Hampton Court.
What about you, denizens of dakka? How do you like your 'baccy?

The Hammer of Witches
A new day, a new time zone.
|
There's just something very introspective about pipe smoking - maybe the fact that a full bowl will take me more than half an hour to finish, and there's something very relaxing about sitting out on the balconey with a drink in one hand, something soothing and instrumental playing on the stereo, slowly puffing away.
It took me a while to figure out how to avoid the tongue bite. I guess I just have a very pH sensitive mouth.

I used to smoke cigars for pleasure, and cigarettes for stress relief, currently considering buying a hookah from my brother. Smoked that socially a few times, and it's good and all, I'm just thinking I won't use it too much.

I have a pipe, though I haven't used it in years. Nicotine just doesn't appeal to me the way it once did; I've smoked a single pack in the past two years, and was relieved when it was empty.
I have been drawing up plans for a hookah, though. Albeit, the main component would just be a hookah, so I guess less plans for one and more plans to buy a cheap one and decorate it with statuary...

I smoke Marlboro Milds. For the wacky I have 3 glass pipes, one water filtration device, an incinerator and a few extra slides for MacGyver smokin'.

I currently only smoke hand rolled cigars (so no black and milds, or swisher sweets and the like), but I am supremely interested in taking up the pipe.
My grandad almost always had a pipe when I was growing up, especially when we were playing cards... which is probably what made him so damn good at them

I smoke a pack of Newports a day now that I am not required to run so frequently in my daily life.
We have a hookah on our top floor that's infrequently filled with Double Apple.
I also frequently engage in that most polite and socially-accepted form of tobacco use...dipping.

Which is hilarious, because dipping is probably the only form of tobacco that actively makes me want to gag.
I never quite learned how to pull the smoke into my lungs, so Cigar smoking was my tobacco of choice for about 2 years, went to work at a camp where I didn't have time to properly enjoy a cigar, and came back to uni and basically couldn't handle a cigar. I've done all other forms of tobacco smoking noted in this thread, and I greatly enjoyed my time with my pipe (I had a cheap corn cob too ), and would probably smoke it if I felt like I really needed to relax a little bit, but that's what alcohol is for .
For awhile I did snus, because it was easier to hide than chew/dip, and it didn't require me to go hide behind a tree to smoke a cigarette.

I smoke a pipe, with generally a sweet, dessert type tobacco in it. I have a love for peach tobaccos, and there's really not much better when going on a long walk in the spring or fall.
Recently I bought a hookah, which has been pretty amazing. Generally smoke it at least once a day. I've decided that Al Fakher is the best type of tobacco I've found for it so far, and the most fun to try to pronounce drunk. My favorite is a toss-up between cherry and mango.

What I love most about hookah is that it lends itself towards social smoking more so than pipes or cigars. Whereas I prefer to smoke my pipe in blissful solitude, there's nothing like sitting around the hookah with a couple of friends and talking for hours. I myself smoked Newports up until I moved away from NY, when I promised my mom I'd quit smoking. I more-or-less made good on that. I might bum a cigarette from a friend when I'm drinking, but I drink pretty rarely these days. I probably have less than 20 cigarettes a year, if that.
So far as the hookah, I do not partake but I have a friend who does and he says it relaxes him - he smokes before painting because he says it steadies his hands.

Go for it. . . if you don't end up enjoying it, I am in fact registered as a 501(c)(3) non-profit entity, so your donation would qualify as tax-deductible. I am also registered as an independent-expenditure PAC, so if you prefer, you may instead opt to donate as many undisclosed hookahs to me as you'd like; as you would of course expect, there are no legal limits on the number of hookahs in such donations, as per the ruling in Citizen's United v. FEC.
If neither of the above options meet your needs, there is also a safe deposit box in the Caymans we could discuss, but you'll have to pm me for the details on that. . .

I was a smoker for 11 years, half a pack of Marb Reds a day, I use an e-cig now, can taste food again and lungs feel better. The only tobacco product I enjoy now is the ocassional cigar to go with a good scotch.
I smoked a pipe when I was in the Navy and was working on my car or something, made me slow down and the whole experience was more enjoyable :-)

I smoked a pack a day for over a decade. Marlboro Milds, the half-menthol, half-regular cigs.
They say you can't quit smoking for someone else, but I did. When my wife and I decided to have a kid, I quit with the assistance of Chantix. (A true miracle drug, that.)
It's been a few years now, no smoking, although I still want to all the time. Most guys have dreams about having sex with other women when their wives are pregnant, I had dreams about checking into sleazy motels to smoke a pack of Newports when my wife was out of town. (For real.)
My wife and son are the only reason I'm not smoking RIGHT now.

Insulate with silicon putty, perhaps? You'd have to run some smaller tube through the barrel, and probably build the rim of the bowl in above the top of the body, to avoid heating it while lighting. I don't know how well the silicon would insulate it, but from what I remember the body of a pipe is reasonably insulated on its own, since one needs to be able to hold it in one's hands and whatnot, so an extra, inert layer would probably make it work.
It's certainly an interesting idea.

I'm a big fan of Acid Blondie cigars. The best I've ever tried and all I smoke currently. Very even-burning, good flavor, and not too big or too much of a time commitment. I'm smoking one right now in fact! =)
Pipes seem to have become popular since The Hobbit. I wouldn't mind giving one a try, although they're expensive. But then again, so are Acid Blondies.
Edit: always found hanging out with other smokers to make me want to smoke cigarettes. I used to be a chain smoker. Pack a day sometimes. Goes great with beer. I'm a geologist and work with drillers a lot, and drillers LOVE to smoke cigarettes. I always am tempted to bum cigarettes from them, but restrain myself, as I know I'd be hooked right away again. They also love dip, but I never tried that and always thought it looked gross.
Tobacco is insanely addicting.

I always loved the tin-packed cigarillos they did. The blondie's were good, but as a starving college student at the time, I had to be economical.

I"ve smoked cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and now finally the hookah, off and on the last 11 years of my life, and the only one I've ever given pause and been afraid I was actually addicted to was actually the hookah of all the things. I'm not sure if it's the social aspect, or the actual tobacco, but I loathe any night I can't kick back and relax to it.

Go try out a corncob pipe is the advice I was given, and it's what I would advise anyone interested in trying out a pipe, for these reasons:
1) It is very inexpensive. Rather than shelling out for a briar pipe, you can get a quality corn cob for around 4 to 6 bucks, a few ounces of different tobaccos for maybe 10 to 15, a 2 dollar pack of pipe cleaners, a 95 cent pipe nail, and you have everything you need to begin smoking a pipe - all for less than the cost of a lesser quality, entry-level briar pipe.
2) It is easier to smoke/learn with. Briar pipes require breaking in; before they will smoke properly, a decent "cake" of carbon residue must be built up along the inside of the bowl. The length of this process varies from pipe to pipe, but will probably take at least a couple of weeks as you can't really smoke a briar more than once a day to avoid damaging the bowl. It also requires consistently even smoking of properly packed bowls, something that is damn near impossible (or at least relatively difficult) to achieve starting off.
A corn cob has to be broken in as well, but it usually doesn't take more than two or three bowls to do so. Part of the reason briars don't reach peak smoking performance until a cake is developed is that the carbon filters the smoke, mellowing and cooling it. Corn cobs naturally smoke much more coolly even without being broken in due to their greater porosity. A cob will give a cooler, drier smoke on its first bowl than a new briar will after a week of breaking in. I've come to find many cob smokers don't allow a cake to build in their pipes at all, claiming that in cobs, cake is unnecessary, or even detrimental to the quality of the smoke. Others prefer to leave a thin layer cake. People will debate which method is better, but it really boils down to a matter of preference.
The greatest advantage for beginners is the fact that a corn cob will usually reach peak smoking performance after the first few bowls, allowing you to focus on getting the hang of proper smoking technique without having to worry about an un-broken in bowl interfering with your enjoyment of the experience.
3) Durability/Replaceability. While obviously not as durable as briar, the disparity isn't great enough to impact the corn cob's outrageous bang to buck ratio. Sure, a high-quality, well-maintained briar pipe will outlast its owner, but that isn't really of much use considering you'll be too dead to smoke it. Also consider that for a pipe of that kind of heirloom quality, you'll probably be shelling out anywhere from 80 to 400 dollars, maybe even more. The lowly, common corn cob, on the other hand, will set you back a whole five bucks, and with diligent care is capable of lasting 20-30 years, or more. It may not last long enough for your grandkids to fight over who gets to sell it after you die, but for a price low enough to do the math on one hand, it's still a pretty good deal, I'd say.
The other benefit of corn cobs is their replaceability. If you are a less than perfect steward of your cob and either lose it, burn it out, or otherwise render it un-smokeable, the loss doesn't hit you in the wallet quite as hard as losing/breaking a briar pipe. This makes cobs much more suited for smoking while fishing, doing yard work, running from the law or otherwise engaging in activities where the risk of damage/loss might warrant leaving a more expensive pipe at home. Corn cobs can also endure, or even rock a certain degree of cosmetic wear and tear that might ruin the looks of a briar pipe with an attractive finish or distinctive grain pattern.
Definitely give this company a look:
http://corncobpipe.com/smokingpipes.html
They have continuously produced corn cob pipes in Washington, Missouri since the 1870's, and are the oldest and largest manufacturer of corn cobs in the world today. If you have bought, smoked, or seen a corn cob pipe anytime in the last 100 years, it was most likely a Missouri Meerschaum. They grow the corn themselves, produce the pipes in the USA, and the pipes they make are the highest quality corn cob pipes in the world, and they are dirt cheap. I would say I recommend them over every other brand, but there are no other brands. That's how good these guys are at what they do.
Of the 16 corn cob pipes they offer, 1 is over ten dollars, and that's because it is one of the only corn cob pipes in the world made entirely by hand. All the rest are under ten dollars, and of those, 7 models sell for under 7 dollars, and 5 of them are 5 dollars or less (I wonder if that's intentional?). They also offer a grab bag of 10 factory seconds for 30 bucks.
They are also some of the nicest people you've ever met, with the best customer service under the sun. They also have a policy that if your pipe ever burns out, you can send it back to them and they will send you back a brand new one for free.
That turned out to be much longer than I had intended, but hey, as PRISM always says, the more information the merrier!

I smoke hand rolled cigarettes. I find that much more pleasant then filter cigarettes, which give me a sore throat (only exception is Gauloises strangely)
I smoke Pall Mall rolling tobacco most of the time, becaue it's cheap tobacco. When I have more money to spare I enjoy Tigra, Drum, or Rasta. I hope you guys in america know of the same rolling tobacco brands
