I thought it was fairly obvious that Smaug was going to be a background threat in the first movie, like a dark cloud looming over everything. Even in the book they see the dragon for a bit, so it shouldn't have been a surprise that he wasn't in the first of three films.

There are feats for that.
Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Still, It would have been nice to see a full body shot of smaug in the flashback.

Legolas obviously has Gunfighter and Virtuoso.

Lots of elf stuff. I'm seeing the adventure with the wood elves drawn way way out.
Guessing, elves tfor 2-10 hours, spider love, more Radagast the Stupid, and finally a glimpse of Smaug (but no more than that).
Not sure if jazzed or not. Watching super ninja elves for an hour doesn't strike me as great.

So porn is the most romantic form of film-making since they show you everything right away?
Or
You don't want to give everything away right up front; you want to build tension and use foreshadowing. None of the characters have actually seen him completely it makes sense that we shouldn't either at this point. When you finally do see Smaug it should be a 'oh ' moment and not, 'oh that guy we saw a movie ago'.

Spiders are before the elves, and you forgot Beorn as well. I don't think it will be that much as they have to get through the spiders, the elves, Beorn, the human town I can't recall the name of that Bard is hanging out at, and then make their way to the mountain all in one film, and that isn't including any side stuff stuff like Gandalf and Radagast hanging out with the Necromancer.

Laketown is where Bard is at.
It'll be interesting to see the elves in a more adversarial role.

So we're not seeing Smaug until movie three? I may just skip this one then or rent it.

Won't happen but it would be awesome if the dwarves messed up some elves...

I didn't say that. We'll see Smaug for sure, as we see him in the trailer. Now I don't know if they are going to end him in this one or not, but certainly the dialogues between Smaug and Bilbo will happen. If I had to guess I think we'll see them kill Smaug in this one and the last we be the Battle of Five Armies.

You could have just said elves, as super ninja elves is a bit redundant.
Laketown is where Bard is at.
In my head I was hearing Rivertown but I knew it wasn't right, and I didn't care enough to google it.

The captain of the guard I believe. In the book a name was never given, and it was male. They looked at the sausage fest that was accumulating and said "you know, what we need in this film is some vagina", and taa-daa, magic!

I don't know why you guys are expecting to see Smaug in the trailer. Even if he's prominently in the movie, they obviously want to keep him, at least visually, a secret until you see him on the big screen.
I thought this would have been obvious.
Edit - and you see his bloody head in the trailer. He's in the movie guys.

Truer words were never spoken- thus went poor Glorfindel. It's funny, in the movies the Elves have become a visual foil for the dwarves- the men are so pretty as to be indistinguishable from the women. The Dwarves are so manly that the women are bearded to the point that they are indistinguishable from the men!

No I'm fine with that. I'm just wondering if Smaug will be amajor portion of this film or will they stretch until Movie Three to make more time for Jar Jar er Radagast.

It is lamentable that they aren't doing the practical/cgi combo they used to such great effect in LotR, but are going with more of a The Phantom Menace route, which is a road no one should take. I have to think some of it is the HFR making everything pop a bit more then usual as well.

While I want to go see the movie, and will at the first moment available, I think there might just be a tad too much scenes with Elves free-running though the forest. Sheesh.
Half the trailer was someone acrobatically jumping down at someone from above.
And when in the book was the dwarves' barrel ride a frigging running battle?

Yeah, but then again Bilbo bouncing along on a raft made of barrels talking with himself isn't exactly riveting film footage. While it makes a decent book, its not that great for a movie.
Word for word translations rarely go well.
And being stuck in the elven fortress for the time they were stuck there would make for a rather tedious movie.

Watched the trailer again, and am left with a few questions
1)What was the first city shown?
2)I don't remember the scene with Bilbo and the butterflies in the book..anyone?
3)Why is Bard so Hoarse?
4) What was that little dwarf guy that was leaping on Gandalf?
5) Will Radagast eat poop again in part 2?
Help someone who seeks wisdom?

The way I'm expecting it is this movie focuses on Smaug and sets up more of the Necromancer for movie 3. So this movie will probably end with the fight for Laketown and Bard doing his thing, and Smaug going down. Movie 3 will be closing off the Necromancer story and the battle of five armies.

To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
