I ran into a deep pothole on a night run about three weeks ago. I messed my foot up pretty bad. The doctor thought it was broken, but it turned out to just be a nasty sprain. The swelling has gone done and the bruises are mostly gone, but it is still quite sore. I'm usually on crutches, but I can walk with a limp. My concern is that I am starting my new full time job in the next week. I'll be on my feet close to 50 hours a week.

Everything I'm seeing on the net is about sprained ankles. My problem area is around the 5th metatarsal at the middle point on the side of my right foot. I am getting along fine for the most part. But I know this thing is going to hurt like a after just one shift.

Is there anything I can do to speed up the healing?

Taking medical advice from an internet forum, you'll probably result in a loss of the foot.

My advice for you, stop asking for advice here.

Oooh, THEN a video camera. That part's the MOST important.

It sounds to me that you need to see your doctor again, or better yet a physio. If you are still on crutches 3 weeks later that sounds as though something nasty has happened and if you have done something serious then standing for 50 hours a week will do you no favours at all.

I sprained my ankle in April last year and I ended up needing surgery. Over a year later I am still undergoing physio, I walk with a slight limp (but that should be gone soonish) and I now have a permenantly weak ankle thanks to a couple of ruptured ligaments which will never heal.

TLR spains can be far worse than broken bones.

Next, a slow, cute animal- turtles will work, but sloths are preferable. Slow lorisis are ideal.

(On a more serious note, I suggest stretching and flexing the foot before work, and soaking it in epsom salt baths afterwards- there's no quick fix for a sprain, but that will ameliorate a bit of the pain and relax the muscles more quickly. In the lead up to the job, exercise as much as you are comfortable with so as to strengthen it for the grueling ordeal the first few weeks will be.)

English doesn't borrow from other languages. It follows them down dark alleyways and mugs them for loose grammar.

Whoa. . . I don't know about you guys, but I was always taught nailgun first, then hacksaw and trampoline. Hacksaw first is just asking for trouble.

Man, 50 hrs a week on that is gonna cripple you for life. Get it healed up first. I'm sure the job will be understanding and accommodating. Hotsauce's suggestion of elevation is good: wrap it for walking, ice pack and elevation when resting. Get a comfortable pillow for it, keep the covers off of it. It should only take a week or two, max, to heal. If not, back to the doctor for you. If all that fails, the hacksaw is a workable idea, just get a piece of wood and you'll have the world's most convincing pirate Halloween costume.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.
