Yep. This is for real. Watch out, parents. Lego is gonna turn your children into little psychopaths. And if you go by the comments on the article, they'll also become gender-stereotypical psychopaths!

Working sniper rifle, minigun and shotgun built from Lego
CULTURE 11 JUNE 10 by DUNCAN GEERE

Jack Streat

A mildly terrifying young Brit named Jack Streat has managed to build a series of working guns, including a Lee Enfield bolt-action sniper rifle, entirely out of Lego and rubber bands. They beat the hell out of last week's printer, that's for sure.

Streat, who lists himself as 15 years old on his profile, has constructed an enormous and diverse armoury of weaponry that fire either rubber bands or Lego bricks. Most are based on real-life guns, including a Steyr AUG, a Tommygun, an AK-47, a belt-fed M429 PARA, an Arctic Warfare sniper rifle, a Glock 17, a pair of semi-automatic TEC-9s, a SPAS 12 pump-action shotgun and a minigun that he calls the Obliterator.

That Obliterator is battery-powered and can fire at two speeds from eight barrels. Each barrel contains 13 rubber bands, meaning that it shoots a total of 104 rounds at up to 25 per second. Ouch. To help test out his creations, he's also built a target range to practice on, which pops up one of three targets at random, for you to aim at.

Streat says, on his profile on Lego-building community MOCpages: "I build guns and weapons. I hope that's evident. On my page you'll find all the stuff that I've built and uploaded in the past year, earlier than that I wasn't actually building guns!"

He's also got a YouTube account with videos of all his creations in action, along with a mysterious video that promises schematics and building assistance to be provided later in the summer in conjunction with another user, which seems to be run by Streat too, LegoArmoury.

I'm just glad he's on our side. He is on our side, right? Here's the pump-action shotgun in motion. Be sure to check out the incredible internal mechanism around 1m20s:

I can't unread that.

So our kids are so malleable that the expressions of toys now dictate behavior?

Where the hell are the parents? You know what happens when my kids get angry and act out against each other? They get an ass beating. They understand that behavior like that is not acceptable and has consequences.

I'll never stop buying them LEGO kits, unless it turns out that LEGO is secretly funding the 4th Reich or something.

This is just another example of crappy parents trying to pass blame for their donkey-cave kids being donkey-caves.

Actually, there are legitimate studies to indicate as much at certain early developmental stages.

However, I would instead put forward the counterargument that Lego has recently become even more AWESOME and leave it at that.

Look at all the legos on the floor now. You could shoot a lego UNDER SOMEONES FOOT as they were taking a step.

What kind of demon is he?

I mostly make mine sit facing each other and make them say 5 things they like about the sibling they are looking at. It seems to work rather well when they talk about the good stuff their sibling does since they begin to realize they actually do like each other and lose the anger.

Mine are 6 and 3, so calmer concepts like those don't work well with a 3 year old who has a rather limited understanding of sentence structure and vocabulary.

A good practice for a few years down the road though.

The more interesting point in the article is how the faces indicate a shift towards more violent lego themes.

If we fought, my parents would make my siblings and I hug until they said we could stop when we were younger. As a child it was one of the worst punishments in the world, yet looking back now I can appreciate how ingenious it was.

I prefer to think of it as Lego making more varied facial expressions in order to become a teaching aid for those affected with Aspergers (or other social maladies).

Also Lego has always been violent. Space ships with guns, cops, robbers, pirates, knights all these things are violent. Converseley, Lego is the only toy that combines destruction with construction , maybe all those people who plan military campaigns should have to play with Lego .

Er, do you know much about the history of Lego? The themes almost ALWAYS been conflict-based...The evergreen Castle theme, the Pirates, the Space theme, the Ninjas, Bionicle - in short, all the classic Lego themes have conflict as a key theme, except for City, unless you count cops and robbers as conflict as well.
