So the main art thread is here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/533884.page

But in this I will be posting some pieces from my process.

I have a bunch of step-by-steps in my blog here: http://galefire.com/blog/

But I'll start with my latest in here for now.

So for this piece, I am making 'card art', like magic cards; so the composition needs to be very focused and easily read even when small.

This is how I started out in my sketchbook

and a few more sketches I didn't particularly love

some linework and tonal value on the composition I chose, which is the middle-right from the first image

and my initial color workup before I start painting

Currently I am painting the image now, probably will be done in a few days; then I will likely be designing the card's outer portions (where all the numbers and text, etc go). Once all that is done, I have several more cards planned, and I am hoping to get them done by Gencon of this year.

Glad you like it

The top one is a photo of my sketchbook, which I then take into photoshop and just drop some gray tones on (should have a new one of those soon for a different piece!), underneath that is all photoshop; I am working on traditional stuff (oils), but it is slow going and a lot different than digital.

Very neat, how long have you been doing this? have you always been good at drawing and concept art in general or was it a process?

Yeah, oils are tricky for painting stuff all that stuff about layers and dry times and stuff cracking etc seems frustrating haha
