Hey everyone,
So I have recently gotten into collecting warhammer 40k miniatures and have a start to 2 armies but I originally started my painting hobby at 12ish years old when I got the original Mines of Moria boxset for my birthday.
I had been collecting lord of the rings miniatures for a bit back then because games workshop stuff was cheaper and lord of the rings is awesome.
But anyways I finally found my mini rulebook from way back in the day and now I want to start playing it as I never played before just painted the minis.
My main question is what is the average point level for a game? I feel it's around 500 points but I'm not sure.
I believe I have about 650-750 points of miniatures right now and was thinking of playing a game of 300 points with a friend.
The models I have currently are:
12 haradrim warriors with bows
10 haradrim warriors with spears
1 haradrim chieftain
1 haradrim warrior with banner
Lurtz
Witch king with flail
10 Uruk hai with shields
9 Uruk hai with pikes
4 goblins with spears
3 goblins with bows
3 goblins with shields
1 cave troll with spear
Pippin
Merry
Sam
Gimli
I also have the rest of the fellowship somewhere horribly painted haha. But I was wondering what I could do with these armies? Can you battle evil against evil?
What's the cheapest and best way to get 500 points of uruks and 500 of haradrim?
Also can I play any evil with any evil models? By this I mean say I used the Uruk hai warriors but wanted to use the cave troll can I do that?
Thanks

I don't know how it may have changed since the old rule book, but you used to be able to ally between forces as long as you took a hero and a couple of troops from that force. Evil va. evil is totally ok & 500 - 750 points is normal.

Well I am using the old book, at least I think that is what the mini rulebook is?
How should I expand these forces?

The point values haven't really changed, so you can still use the old Mines of Moria book (I do), but the newer releases all have rules in their respective sourcebooks.

Yeah, you should be fine with the old book.
The game actually works well at several different points levels. My group plays 500 mainly, but it works well from 300 to 1000. You don't really want to play games larger than 1000 points because then you wish to rip your testicles off in a fit of rage.
Evil + Evil is fair game. You'll just need heroes. So for the cave troll, you'll need a Moria Goblin captain to lead the tiny warband. Unless your friend doesn't mind you not using the leader.
The forces on your evil side is actually quite decent, you could play an army from Helms Deep or something (since in the books it states that not just Uruks fought at the battle but snaga as well, and the Orcs used probably would have been Misty Mountains orcs, ie Goblins).
The cheapest way is probably eBay. You find some brilliant deals on there.
Play tiny games first, maybe max 300 points, to get a feel for the game and the might/will/fate system. You'll soon get used to the game, but don't play games larger than 1000 points if you like your nether regions.

You've got the bare bones of three forces there.
A very basic Isengard Force with your Uruk Hai and Lurtz. I think the core you have is solid, but you could consider adding some of their specialist units like Uruk Hai Berserkers or Crossbows.
An Isengard troll is a possibility but you could always ally with moria to use your cave troll, which is cheaper in points and money!
Moria wise, you've got a skeleton force. You'd really need a good few more goblins, probably some special units like the goblin drum etc as well. You can easily convert the drum if you need to- I made mine out of the Troll Drum I got with my Mordor/Isengard Troll kit. A couple more Cave Trolls wouldn't hurt, either.
Your Haradrim Force is okay, but it needs some umph too. So you could add some half trolls or a Mamuk I suppose.
Overall, you've got one good force if you utilise allies, but the other force needs either some more grunts and a couple more heavy hitters. Recommend crossbows, berserkers and maybe a troll or Saruman for Isengard, more goblins, trolls, and the goblin drum for Moria, and not sure but probably half trolls and cavalry for Harad?

So if I were to combine some of the evil I could make a decent 300 point army?
I just ordered 40 warriors of Minis Tirith because I got a sweet deal on them for 30 bucks unprimed.
So I was thinking about having a battle with them. Any suggestions for other units for them?
Also the how to build a army in the rulebook kinda sucks so what is a war band? Do they each need a hero or captain?

Well, the warband rules were added after that rulebook was printed.
You need 1 Hero for every 12 non-heroes. Honestly, you could just paint some of your regular warriors a little differently and that'd work.
I'd add some Knights of Minas Tirith for calvary. For heroes, Boromir of the White Tower is absolutely ridiculous! Aragorn/King Elessar is pretty good too. You could also have Gandalf lead them.

Yes, good old Mithrandir is very nice. Elessar's sick, but to be honest, I like Boromir better.

Well I just found my boromir model so I can use him as a hero and then just a captain of gondor for the rest.
I just picked up 46 goblins as well which will be a good addition to my goblin force.
it can make I think 350 points of isengard, over 500 of goblins, about 400 to 500 of minas tirith and then 250 or 300 of haradrim.
I think that's a good start on my collection for now and probably won't be getting any more miniatures right now.

Like you and your opponent agree to play, say, 2424 points a side.
You could do several scenarios: it's always dandy to have Warriors of Minas Tirith since they can do most anything. If you can get your hands on some of the old sourcebooks, there are loads of scenarios. Gondor in Flames, Harad or Khazad-Dum would be good books.

Okay that's what I thought you meant by the points thing haha.
Are the scenario /adventure books good like the fellowship of the ring one? Because those are available through gw still.
Is it still fun just death matching basically?
I thought of a possible scenario tho with minas tirith and Uruk hai.
250 points a side, max 1 named hero.
Uruks have one of the Hobbits on one of the uruks backs (represented by the hobbit beside the chosen model.
A piece of terrain (wall or building) is placed in the middle left and another piece placed in the middle right of the board (right on the edges) . Armies then deploy 24 inches minimum from the building. The uruks have to bring the hobbit to the building without dying.
If the Uruk defending the hobbit is killed the hobbit gets onto the back of the warrior who kills the Uruk. If this occurs the uruks have to try and kill the warrior and make their way to the building.
Minas tirith warriors must make their way to the opposite building. Whoever reaches their stronghold with the hobbit wins.
Does that sound like something that would be doable?

Yeah, sounds actually quite fun! You could also use the rules for carrying heavy objects.
Death matching is realyl fun, but to be honest, scenarios are where the game truly shines.
The journey books are also good, but the forces in them are a bit more specific. Like the missions aren't so generic as they are in the old sourcebooks. For example, they may not work so well as the Field Of The Celebrant scenario in Shadow In The East with completely different forces - I've played the mission with Mordor Orcs and Haradrim against Minas Tirith. Which is a shame.
