Just a stupid question, I know, however I thought it could be a nice detail to add to my growing Black Legion army.
As you could expect I have some CSM models that are ornated with loyalist beheaded helmets or similar trophies.
I was wondering if there is a loyalist chapter against which there is an even greater enmity from the Black Legion army (or Abaddon himself, as the army will contain him one day).
Or, viceversa, if there's a loyalist chapter that hates Black Legion most amongst all other traitors.

As far I've considered three ideas:
> Paint them with old Luna Wolves colors, so as to represent old brothers that did not rebel with Horus
> Paint them with Grey Knights colors which, at least for what I understood, are considered the elite of Space Marine chapters (correct me if I'm wrong please).

However I was curious to see your opinion from people that know the story behind the game better than me. Which chapter would be considered the best trophy by a Black Legion traitor?

Hmm, I think the Black Legion have no particular preferred enemy Space Marine Chapter, I think they hate all as much as the rest.

You could possibly say the Blood Angels and Imperial Fists for being the defenders of the Imperial Palace, also for who's Primarchs boarded the Vengeful Spirit.

Grey Knights would also be a worthy trophy as you say.

Ultramarines and thier successors as there are so many bloody of them

Depends on if the CSM is one of the old veterans or a newer recruit, I'd think.

IMO those that were on Terra would prize a trophy from one of the defending Legions (now Chapters) above all others. Blood Angels, Imperial Fists, White Scars. Not that they'd scoff at a trophy from any other First Founding Chapter ofc. Or the GK, or any other Chapter that has made a name for itself against Chaos. Or anyone that happened to get in their way and put up a fight.

A newer CSM wouldn't have the same hatred for his old foes but would still try picking trophies based on what gains him respect with the oldtimers.

Blood Ravens seem to have a connection with Black Legion.

I'd say Blood Angels or Imperial Fists too. The Black Legion must have about equal hatred for both, but in return the Blood Angels absolutely despise the Black Legion - both for the killing of Sanguinius and for an ambush much later where the Blood Angels were forced to retreat without recovering their geneseed.

It stands to reason they might well be flaunting a few trophies from that "incident".

I agree with the Blood Angels, Imperial Fists and White Scars as carrying the greater weight.

A distant fourth would be the SW, whose homeworld is closest to the Eye of Terror of the loyalist First Founding chapters.

You would be good with the defenders of terra or the victims of the drop site massacre.

I think I'll go with Blood Angels for HQ and Elites who are veterans and thus likely to have gone through the Battle of Terra and the 7th Black Crusade.
Grey Knights for everyone else, since they couldn't partecipate in those legendaries battle they will instead showcase the enemy's elite troops.

This also gives me yet another slight hint to visually tell apart regular CSMs from Chosens

I honestly don't see the Black Legion in general having any real reason to hate any loyalist chapters. Their ire is aimed more at the other traitors - notably the Emperor's Children who cloned Horus against Abaddons wishes (which led to the Sons of Horus becoming the Black Legion).

Individual Black Legion units of course could have a particular hatred for any chapter - the unit might have had great personal victories on Isstvan III, V and Terra only to be decimated by the Ultramarines some time during the Scouring, hell they could have set up a bastion somewhere that the Scouring missed and rules as lords for a millenia or two, only to be brought low by a bunch of nobody 3rd Founding Chapters.

The Blood Angels definitely hate the Black Legion more than any other loyalist can hate any traitor, due purely to the slaying of Sanguinius, any other issue is a mere triviality: Every single Blood Angel alive carries the 'genetic' memory of Sanguinius death, every single one of them is doomed to eventually succumb to it completely and either manage to die in the death company or be reduced to a howling beast. The odd massacre or defilement at Black Legion hands since is mere frosting on the cake of their hatred.

Hence, 'no particular' and 'possibly'.

Some members of the Black Legion could still hold the grudge that they were bested and that the false Emperor still reigns, Abaddon does. That's kinda the point of what the 13 Black Crusades have been about and it's all too do with the same thing. Horus might have let it all slip away, but Abaddon will correct that, or at least thinks he will.

You could argue that about some of the other Legions, why do the Iron Warriors still hate the fists, why do the Thousand Sons still wage war on the Space Wolves.

If anything Chaos Marines have long memories and hold even longer grudges, I guess they are the replacement Squats.

Secondly blood angels

I would say blood angels as it was the BA that went mad as a legion upon the death of sanguinius and sallied out of the palace and drove the traitors retreat into a rout.

I'd say they'd hate the Emperor himself for killing their Horus.

Ultramarine's at least back in the HH times, in the 13 Crusades since, I think they would hate fighting all the Ultramarine Kiddy Chapters that Legion Created.

The Traitors wanted them well out of the way, they were the biggest Legion and most tactically competent. They are despised by the almost all the Traitor Legions, and they aren't exactly loved by the Loyalists.

They are just seen as too good, too preening, reveling in well deserved Glory. They are the Mary Sue's and hated because of how perfect they are..Their empire, their realm, their numbers, their efficiency, their Benevolence and their administrative ability.

No other Legion were as well rounded as the Ultra's.

Blood Angels...Maybe but Horus and Sanguinius were close.

Wolves...Maybe as the Emperors Executioners.

Blood angels because of the reasons above and them more than IF and WS because they know that blood angels hate them and why not add insult to injury.

They don't need to, the defenders of terra and the Dark angels and space wolves snatched victory away from them all not only from horus.

The point being they don't hate the Emperor for killing their daddy, in fact, they probably resent Horus more for being such a weakling. Note: The Black Legion only quit the battle after Horus died, not because the DA/SW finally showed up/picked a side.

edit: Also note that the Sons of Horus were a larger Legion than either of those you listed, only eclipsed by Ultramarines and Word Bearers, neither of whom were present on Terra.
