I am tossing around whether to use SM or CSM to build the Soul Drinkers chapter.... They are still for the ideals of the empire, but there are some mutations. I have a bunch of unpainted chaos, so was thinking of using them. Any thoughts will be appreciated!

Thank you to all who posted on here about how to play them, what rules to use, ect.... Was great reading, and played heavily on my decision to paint them.

They would be the base sm model maybe with a few, but very few mutations.

I dunno...their chapter master had 8 legs lol.

I say mix it up and let your imagination go with it, maybe mix SM & CSM parts (perhaps avoiding any direct chaos god parts) - if you want to limit mutations maybe make a squad that they herd all their mutants into (the 'unfortunates').

Essentially I am doing something similar but with no mutations for my relictors.

I'd use normal SM as a starting point and maybe add a few possessed bitz in here and there. But i'd remove most of the chaos typic decorations to let them look more like mutated loyalistst than possessed chaos marines.
But i wouldn't overdo the mutations because as far as i know most of the soul drinkers mutations where more subtle.

I was kinda thinking of doing a bit of a more chaosy version, artistic license so to speak, have some fun with it. I do agree not to go TO chaosy though, and I will definately post pics up as I go, but it's gonna be slow as I work my 40 hours a week in 3 days, then am in school the other 4.

You can also use some BA bits, as they include a lot of grail motifs. There was a GW article when the BT bits came out that showed some Soul Drinkers using the WFB Brettonian Grail Knight bits to make a command squad.

Looks like I am going to have to do a little more research into what bits I will use... And gather the funds to buy models specifically for this project.

You are right, i totally forgot the grail iconography. Maybe i should read the books again.

I have done most of the Soul Drinkers, currently on hold to repaint them all with the new purples from citadel. Check out some of my pics for some ideas, read the books and Yes It is NOT Cheap to build a fully customized soul drinker army. but very rewarding.

Make sure you add my a Soul Drinker Librarian with flames coming off him and fire coming from his hand. Let it look little out of control even. (Probably one of my favorite members of the chapter)

Btw you could make a mutated Chapter Master model with 6 legs (I think he only had 6 right?), and use it to represent you Leader. Guess he could be used as a bike mounted Captain in your army.

The Soul Drinkers novels didn't seem to particularly talk too much about mutations present in non-characters. In fact, it seems that all the ones with mutations got the promotions and became important characters...
