I don't like it but I don't see how it is the best thing ever. 5 or 6 Deny the Witch w/ a 1 or 2 on my initiative save. 2/3rds of the time I will make the save on my Tervigone and its range is only 24'. I ruined both Wolves armies i went against.
Am I missing something?

And 1/3 of the time your ~200pt Tervigon (depending on what sort of upgrades it has) simply disappears. Even Iron Arms Eternal Warrior buff won't save you. Deny the Witch made it a bit less of a sure thing, and it was a massive kick in the pants to Tyranid players in 5th. But even now, you basically get a power armour saves odds against losing your ~200pt army lynchpin. It's still a great way to drop Tervigons, which Tyranids are heavily reliant on. But a good Wolf player probably wouldn't take it anyway. The power is a one trick pony - it was made to drop stuff like Tervigons. Against everything else, it's pretty ordinary. Wolves have far better powers. Basically, you got lucky. Lucky that he took that instead of a better power, and lucky you made your rolls.

Living Lighting is AMAZING, and Murderous Hurricane is pretty awesome too. Stormcaller is great for giving a cover save bubble out in the open. I only take Jotww when I'm facing Necrons, Tau, Orks, or Tyranids. Even then, the power is still pretty meh to me, and I think people who whine about it are... well, whiny. It's not amazing, on top of being situational. On the plus side, it's probably the best thing to use against riptides!!!

A good Space Wolves player will never let you get your 5+ Deny the Witch, so realistically you only have a 44.44% of passing either your Termagants'/Gargoyles'/whatever's Deny the Witch or the 2- for your Tervigon's initiative test (53.7 if you include the Rune Priest's psychic test). That's essentially a power that goes "flip a coin, if you roll a heads your 160+ point model instantly dies."

Page 420 of the rulebook has a list of some of the best powers in 40k, it's called the Divination table and Space Wolves have access to it.

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

JOTWW is super broken and SW players should always have it on their RP. Doesn't mean you have to take it to every battle, defaulting to Divination is often a good strategy.
Simply having the option use JOTWW against low I armies or going to prescience against others is nice to have for certain.

Just adding my 2c.
Before 6th ed, I hated JOTWW, but now it's not so scary. I have a few times paid to make my tervigon Mastery level 2, by taking cataclysm. I know the Biomancy table is better, but I really wanted to KNOW that I could give my units feel no pain. It did also mean that my deny roll’s were on a 4+. So, a lot less scary. Just a shame that ‘Domination’ isn’t as useful.
On a side note, having big units of Gaunts with a 5+ cover from my venomthropes in the open, along with FNP made them A LOT more bullet proof! Definitely worth a try sometime. Even if just for a laugh.
On another side note, it quite annoys me that Tervigons have ‘Domination' as standard & you have to pay for the other powers. Surely it would make more sense for it to have no powers, with 3 or more to pick from. (at a points cost of course).
& now I’m waffling, I’d love to be able to pay say.... 35 points or something to be able to spawn Hormogaunts. Anyone else on board with this? Anyone?

Klueless: It is impossible to increase the mastery level of a Tervigon, you can only buy them more powers, even with 3 powers they'll still be mastery level 1 and only generate a single warp charge per turn.

If your opponent knows what he's doing, he will first draw the Jaws line through another unit, (not hard to do if he's outside of Shadows range) so that you only deny on a 6+. And yes the odds aren't horrible, but I somehow lose a 'Gon every time I have to take a check.
