So, since this is the off topic board I figured I'd translate a popular topic of counterfeit tabletop figures to something a bit more tangible. Hyper-cars no less.

Anyways, I found this website http://audiusamotors.com/index.php which sells custom built knock off super cars, armored cars, and other unthinkably expensive things at bargain prices. I know I'm going to have to call them and see if the fake Mclaren is really a thing or just smoke and mirrors, and I'll report back once I've done so. But in the mean time, what cars do you dakkanauts dream of that you could otherwise never afford, and what do you think of a business like this.

None of the above. If I'm going to pay more than the cost of a simple point-A-to-point-B car I want the high-end performance, not just a shell that vaguely looks like an expensive car.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Massive pinch of salt to be taken here, as I don't drive. BUT.

As Peregrine said, the sensible approach is to pay money for extra performance, or perhaps other less obvious things like reliability, practicality or even resale value later thanks to low depreciation (Mini's anyone...?).
It's the same problem with after-market body kits to make one car look like another. Paying a lot of money to make your ordinary car look more flashy is only useful for one thing - showing off - but... er... if you don't actually HAVE the proper car, what exactly are you showing off in the first place?! That you have a lack of common sense?

All the cars I like aren't there.

But I suppose they aren't really hyper cars - corvette stingray, lancia stratos, Nissan 280zx in electramotive racing livery etc.

If I won the lottery, I'd buy a real one. If I hadn't won the lottery, I couldn't afford to run one of these either - How do you take your family out for the day if you've spent all your cash on a mclaren F1 replica with 1 seat in it and you can't afford to run a second car?

Knock off supercars exist, but you are basically paying twice as much for a cheap car with extra heavy body modifications killing your performance and gas mileage. It's the worst of both worlds unless you are a filmmaker or something.

For some reason, in my mind the world's most desperate picture includes read tattoos, but they're all tribal designs.

Imitation armored cars, that look like normal cars, and aren't even armored...

Image.

So you can look like a total badass while not losing the fuel efficiency that usually comes with adding a thousand pounds of armor.

I've always loved the 3 seat layout of the Mclaren F1, but being that one of those goes for over 5 million these days. I'm not looking to stuff my crotch just trying to realize an impossible dream.

Basically the entire frame of your car is made from welded tubes rather than flat steel like normal vehicles are made.

Yep. While I originally wanted the explorer version, from what I understand (I am not a car person by any means or stretch of imagination) the only way to get something that looks like it is to get that specific model of explorer, which is terribad on gas and all that. However, from what I've been told the jeep could be made with more recent models, so that might be a better choice.

I just though it neat to drive around in one. If you get into a wreck and you can still drive it, when people asked what happened you can blame those damn dinosaurs. The thought process of getting one didn't go far beyond that.

Don't get in a wreck with one, especially if you're wearing a lap belt instead of a five-point harness.

Tubular Chassis are actually pretty safe.. Ferraris', AC Cobras, Countach and Diablo are just some examples of Tubular Chassis. And most are considered safe. With things like Kit Cars though, well it all depends on who made it. If it was an Anal retentive Engineer who made the car in a specialist garage with all the right tools it's safe.
If it was made by me in my parents garage with nowt but spitballs and a hammer, it won't be.....

I wanted one of those Explorers, almost scary how badly, for at least 2 years after I saw that movie... Ford Explorers of that era were absolute garbage (most every domestic car of that era was) but that didn't stop my 9 y/o mind from thinking its one of the best paint jobs on a car EVAR!! And it had the giant panoramic sunroof if I remember correctly, which was pretty far ahead of its time. I do remember the Jeep now, its the one the fat guy gets done in by that dinosaur that spits on people right?

Anyway sorry to carry off topic, but I do think it would be funny to ride around in a Camry powered Bugati Veyron, you would eventually run out of excuses as to why it just got dusted by some ones Dodge Caravan, and you know, explaining why it sounds like a Camry...

I'd buy the gak out of one if I could be assured that their wouldn't be 10,000 things wrong with it and no repair person would touch it.

~$20k is about what I payed for my winter car anyway and payed it off in a year, having a sweet, a decent looking convertible for that would be nice.

but again, the lack of guarentees, backbone, and how complicated a car is, eeeehhhhhh, probably not a good idea.

From my experience, kit cars are usually not very well known for reliability.. but most folks wouldn't use one of these for a daily driver. And you are probably right Grundz, if you break something you are gonna be waiting for parts, although they did choose a rather reliable engine with the Toyota V6 they take from some poor Camry.

It would be fun though to roll up to Walmart in a Bugati Veyron in some pajamas and slippers to grab some toilet paper and a soda.
