So I got a Necron Army for a lot less than RRP and I don't know where to go next.

I've got:

CCB box.
Box of Warriors.
2x Night Scythes.

I've worked it out to a rather fragile 500 points.

What do I buy next?

I would go for a Battleforce and some Lychguard.

use the Lychguard to make Lords to babysit your troops (warriors, and Id say all 5, use 3 of them to Deathstar up with your Overlord), assemble the Immortals form the Battleforce as Deathmarks and give them the RoC from the Triarch Praetorians (to make decent looking Crypteks), and the Ghost Ark as a DDA.

You then have:
Overlord
5x Lords
5x Crypteks
24x Warriors
Annihilation Barge
2x Night Scythes
DDA

I would also recommend a Triarch Stalker, as onre of those wth the TL HGC & 5x LanceTeks will dish out a lot of TL AT firepower.

That also boosts your list to look like this:

HQ
Overlord with your choice of Shizwaz (I go for SW, WS, PS, MSS, RO, costing 205 points) in a RC deathsatr of 3 Lords weaponised the same (great fun, but probably not the most cost efficient method of play)

Troops
2x 12 Warriors in Night Scythes with babysitter (SW RO Lord to tank shots, fire at AP3 and reanimate dead guys)

Elites
Stalker to mark something to die *right now*
coincides with the DDA and 5x Lanceteks to serve as a firebase.

HS
DDA, see above.
Annihilation Barge (anti - whatever-you-point-it-at)

EDIT: That's roughly 1500 points right there.

Only one Barge and no CCB?

I also thought the DDA was subpar.

well, Annihilation Barges outstrip CCBs an every way for 10 extra points, so why not?

DDAs are only bad due to having to remain still to use their cannon to its full power. But, with a Stalker marking targets upfield, you can use it like an artillery piece, very accurate, very deadly. TL S9AP1 Large Blast is nothing to sniff at.

Well, I'm buying the army in segments.

I have this so far:

Lord in CCB.

5 Warriors in Night Scythe.
5 Warriors in Night Scythe.

Comes in at Dead On 500 pts.

I usually buy armies in bulk and get bored of painting them. So doing it this way will keep me interested.

Might go for Annihilation Barges for 750 with some gear for the Overlord and Wraiths and a Destroyer Lord for 1000.

I haven't played Necrons since 3rd ed, so this is a new army for me as they have changed loads since.

At normalish levels, I want to take a Doom Scythe as I think that Death Ray is fantastic.

Oh... and why does everyone recommend the Stalker?

It looks really naff, but can buff other units. Downside is, most of my units are twin linked already.

linked with certain units, like DDAs Monoliths Lanceteks, the Stalkers are the greatest thing ever. Ever had a templtate that just really didn't need to scatter? yeah, TL that blast.

I wouldn't recommend Wraiths & a DLord, it is a very boring l
unit to play IMHO

Ahhhh I see now. Well I'm not a fan of the units that benefit frkm the Stalker, so I can forget about that unit. Except maybe the Monolith. I quite like the model.

ATM, my army composition is made up of models I like, mainly.

As for the Wraith, I've never used them before, so I might not mind them as much.

Any tips on Tomb Blades?

destroyer lords with wraiths really are an evil unit.
Dlord and 6 wraiths with 2 whips really is pretty nasty and gives you a combat element to your army, which crons are in need of alot of the time.

A.barges are simply amazing for the cost, i usually run 2-3 of them, and a doomscythe when im only running 2.
Damage output is great, but people will target them straight away.

Never used Tomb Blades myself, so I cannot comment

Command barges are a good deal, as you get 2 possible units from it and a lord to boot. A box of warriors gets you a troop choice and a enough scarabs for 4 bases. The deathmark box gets you 5 immortals, and enough bits to kit out some of the warriors as deathmarks. Ghost arks are easily magnetized to switch between ghost and doomsday versions and with some effort you can turn the passengers into more warriors, or just make reanimation markers out of them.

Well, two Annihilation Barges, DLord, and some Wraiths. Immortals are also great.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards that too.

If I have three of the five man warrior squads in Scythes, will this be enough troops in games of 1750 - 2000?

Tomb Blades are a good unit. I prefer their blast weapons over everything else, and then either the shadowloom or shield vanes for the squad.

Well, this is a possible approach. But I prefer full squads of Immortals or 10 Warriors for greater impact. Remember that with Night Scythes you can bring them to any spot on the board.

Kool, thanks, I'll try to fit them in.

I've got Fall Of Orpheus, I might make my army from that list instead.

The entire idea behind 5 Warriors in a Night Scythe is that you keep them on the flyer all game long, ignoring objectives and everything and then drop them in the last turn when it's too late to do anything against it.

People always tend to forget that you win with VP, not by killing as much as possible.
I've seen people lose games because even though they shot down much more of the opponent, they also lost all of their scoring units.

Ahhhhh, thanks for that. Similar to Dark Eldar, but the chumps are tougher.

Definitely going with a Maynarkh Dynasty force. Not only is it fairly unique, it looks fun and is pretty powerful.

Well, seeing as you need the same models for both armies and a Necron-codex, there is nothing stopping you from switching whenever you feel like
