I was talking to a friend of mine today who travels up to the GW battle bunker in Bowie, MD. He said that GW was trying to sell itself off and give up on FW. On top of that though(and this part pissed me off), that that particular shop wasn't allowing FW models, or IA army lists. PERIOD. I don't live in MD and I don't even game at a GW. I love 40K. But, good lord what in the bloody **** is going on with GW?

Ehh, that's odd.
GW isn't trying to dump FW or selling itself off.

The technical term for this is bullgak.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

I have used my epicast, armorcast and FW ork stuff there multiple times... and have participated in a FW 'group buy' organized by the store to have enough to avoid the shipping fee.

Sometimes they run events like a tourney or something where they want core game units, but when they have 40k general play or where you are using FW models as core units, I have never had a problem.

I might have to get my broom and declare shenanigans on this post.

I'm hearing this from a friend of mine who goes there. We were also going back and forth on which is better to game at? A GW or a Ind shop? I can see where hes coming from when considering that in southern MD there aren't that many decent places to play 40K. But, I have personally had better gaming experiences at Ind shops.

Probably work

No one in MD would know. They're so removed from corporate that they're espousing rumors based upon rumors based upon rumors. Hell, the GW guys probably got the rumor from the Dakka thread from about a month ago.

Where do these "GW wants to sell itself off" rumours come from? Look at the investor structure, how would that even work with fragmentation like that?

This is partly sensible.

GW selling itself would make a lot of sense. The shareholders (who are the people making that decision) get a nice profit, so I have no doubt that if a willing buyer appeared and made an acceptable offer GW would be sold. And if there's an interested buyer it makes sense for GW to make an effort to present themselves as an appealing option to ensure that they get a good offer. Even if they have no specific deal in progress right now it's a possibility they have to keep in mind at all times.

GW giving up on FW would just be stupid. FW is profitable and fairly independent, so it would be a case of losing money with no apparent benefit.

On top of that though(and this part pissed me off), that that particular shop wasn't allowing FW models, or IA army lists. PERIOD.

Yes, some people have stupid house rules. Take a look at the "worst FLGS stories" threads that show up occasionally if you want some more examples. I suggest staying far away from those stores and letting them run themselves out of business.

PSA

Dropzone Games, 6711 Baymeadow Dr Glen Burnie MD--has at least 30 Warhammer-sized tables at this point, growing every month.

I only live 30 minutes from this store, but never go to it... I prefer the local independent stores. Not only can I always use whatever models I want, from any manufacturer, but I can play different games, too

Dropzone is great, may be a little far from SoMD, but there are some Virginia places which may not be too far from you.

That doesn't mean they can't have stupid policies, or that you should keep playing there if the local manager does something stupid. We've certainly seen enough "my local GW did something stupid" threads to establish that poor management is not something that is unique to independent stores.

I think some people have reported that the occasional GW store in the UK doesnt allow FW, so you cant discount the possibility that the one in this thread has that policy. Might depend on who is running the store at the time.

I would always go to a flgs if one was available over a GW store, there the decision to use FW or not will likely be made by whoever is gaming rather than the store owner.

My favorite was during 2nd edition, my store forcing anyone who wanted to play in store to have bases done like Eavy Metal. Sand, Goblin Green, Sunburst Yellow drybrush. What was more hilarious was my brother did exactly this but painted the base trims black. No, absolutely not allowed. He had to paint the trims goblin green in store to play, then repaint them black when he got home.

Yeah, GW can have some pretty dumb store policies. It's all down to the manager.

A few months ago, I heard a rumour from a guy whose friend had told him that GW had been bought out by some company in the Bible Belt, so all references to Chaos and other things that could be viewed as Satanic were going to be removed.

How did that one get started, I wonder?

And as I look over the top of the turret and see twelve enemy tanks fifty yards away, someone hands me a cheese sandwich."

Now I'm imagining something like that happening now, when scenic bases are so widely available. You could actually get banned from playing in a store for having models that look too good!

Bowie Battle Bunker doesn't like people bringing FW lists / models, because they no longer stock the IA books.

The reasoning they have is: if somebody brings in a FW model, their opponent may not have had the time to study the rules, because the Battle Bunker doesn't have a store copy of all of the IA books.

That is the reason. Nothing more, nothing less.

Now as to way GW doesn't provide copies of the IA books to their main store in the mid-atlantic region is another topic.

Back on topic though I think this rumor can be filed along side the Elvis working in the fish and chip shop and Hitler the Argentinian goat farmer rumors.

It can't laugh at that because of what happened with 2nd Ed AD&D.
