I have been successful in the noble art of convincing the missus of starting a new game system.

With that in mind, and because infinity is a bit overwhelming due to the sheer amount of factions and sub-factions, I was wondering if anyone could help with a couple of simple issues.

- Considering that there is a considerable chance of me getting to be the sole player of infinity, after a few games with her, is it viable to buy 2 starters (one for me and one for her), only to make a larger single army, for gaming club purposes?

- We have shortlisted 2 factions: Aleph and Yu Jing. Is there any negative aspects on these factions for inexperienced starting players?

- which of these pairing of starter sets would be better for the aim of a single army down the line: a) Imperial service + Japanese sectorial army or b) Steel PHalanx + Aleph Starter Pack?

Thanks for any replies!

Are you looking at getting two starters from the same factions then? I was going to suggest getting the generic haqq and nomad starters which you could then use in a Haqqislam Qapu Khalqi sectorial list.

Of the starters you've suggested both of the Yu Jing ones are from separate sectorials so you would only be able to combine the models in a generic yu jing list and some of them will have higher availability than you can use in a generic list (so you probably wouldn't be able to use all the models). Also the points costs of each of the boxes may not be balanced so if you are playing the lists straight out of the boxes they may not be balanced without some proxying.

I'm not sure about the costs of the steel phalanx starter but the aleph starter has some expensive units in it so again may not be balanced against the steeel phalanx starter. Also not all of the units from the Aleph starter are usable in the steel phalanx list although you might get most of the steel phalanx stuff in a generic list.

Yes, but you'll probably end up with more light infantry then you actually need.

Not particularly. Yu Jing is the easier of the two factions to learn, but Aleph isn't that unusual rules wise. The hardest parts about Aleph are probably Post Humans (which aren't in the starter) and learning to abuse smoke grenades.

If I were starting Yu Jing again I would get the regular starter and the Japanese Sectorial Army unless one of you was really set on the look of the Imperial Agents. The Imperial Service box comes with some units that are gimpy outside of an ISS list. I'm looking at you Imperial Agents. Combining the Aleph starters would be a more well rounded list then what you could get combining any of the Yu Jing, but's that like my opinion, man.

A third option would be to buy the Aleph Starter and the Imperial Service, since ISS can take some Aleph units like the Dakini tactbots.

The best way to buy two starters to combine into one army if she doesn't like it is to buy a normal starter and a sectorial starter, or even two different sectorial starters. Sectorials boxes can generally run as a normal army, and if there's troop restrictions that stop you doing this, you can run it without the Link rules (since they're actually optional - just don't form a Link team in game). For example, a Yu Jing starter and an Imperial Service/JSA starter, or Imperial Service starter and JSA

This will stop you getting a bunch of doubled up models, and you'll be able to mix and match all of them right away to make two more varied starter armies.
