So my target for this month is 10 Tactical Marines:

It takes me on average 4 hours per model so this is achievable, the reason it takes so long is the damn yellow, anyone painting or having painted fists will understand this.

The models have no extra's on them due to them being basic marines and the fact I kit bash my veterans from all the spares of the tactical sprue's.

As it is a tournament force I did invest in the tactical Designation pads but unfortunately did not get a shot of it in this set, and the Imperial Fist Should Pads and back packs for all 20 of my marines.

This is the begging of a long project to paint 20 Tactical Marines, Pedro Kantor, 15 Sternguard Veterans and a Drop Pod, 2 Vindicators and finish the Stormtalon, and finally 3 Melta Bikes

Look forward to comments the pics are no doubt rubbish as I only have my phone cameras and its an old Xperia x10 model.

(I do only primarily paint to play not buy to paint, so not too harsh pls but ways to improve are always appreciated for ways to improve the models)

To be fair, if you just paint to play that is one mighty fine looking yellow. You took your time to get an even coat so we don't see the undercoat.

I think I see a small mistake on his right shoulder pad but I can't see it well.

Overall, he's pretty cool, nicely done! I want to see those 10 marines by the end of the month!

Loving that shoulderpad! You've done a decent job with the yellow, which is the hardest color (in my opinion) to paint. Your photos are a little tinted, so it's hard to say for sure exactly how good the yellow is coming across in real life, but it looks good from where I sit. The only real negative comment I have is the green purity seal. I don't think it works in this context. I think red is your best bet, personally.

it isn't undercoat on show anywhere except maybe on the inside of the pad, slightly and the risk of having to recover yellow may of been too high, start with a white base build it up via drybrushing, and inks. i attempted to edge it with white which i don't think now you say it can off too well.

i find it easier painting yellow in unnatural light, don't know why just do and given it was like late when i finished him this evening i photo'd him keep an eye if i got time before work tomorrow i will try and get some natural lighting shots as well.

i couldn't decide on the purity seal myself either, went green for sarges com squad, so that the heavy com squad can go red, allowing if i combat them down they can still be told apart if i deploy them next to each other

Can I give you a piece of advice from someone who used to paint like you? (ie start one model, paint to completion, start another etc)

Stop.

The job will break you before you get it done.

I can't say 10 models in a month is reasonable or not, because I don't know how much time you've got to paint, but batch painting is the way forward.

I heartily recommend you investigate Army Painter Coloured Primer (they do two yellows and you don't need to put down another spray first)

A coat of that, followed by a Sepia wash and I think you could significantly cut down on your painting time (or at least be able to invest more time in the detail work, if you'd rather) and be looking at a squad in a week, rather than a month!

Great looking start though.

did testers with army painter yellows both final results made me want to puke, they were both hideous didnt matter how i done it it looked sprayed, and tbh with yellow plain crap.

thank you for the suggestion though, and it will take me as long batch painting as well, as i found out on the terminators that i done a while back (not part of my tournament force)
and i get about 10hrs a week to paint so an average of 40 a month.

Fair enough, if you're not happy with the quick way, then respect for sticking to the hard way.

Alternative suggestion -airbrush.

Airbrushsupplyonline has some very cheap compressor/brush bundles on eBay, with free UK delivery. They won't be good enough for fancy pants techniques, but since I got mine, I can go from bare plastic to 10 man units fully base coated with zenithal highlights in about 2 hours.

The other thing I've found is paint with known poor coverage (like yellows) seems to cover better when airbrushed, which could be a big plus for you.

I'm not saying you're wrong in your approach, but I approached my 2e Blood Angels the same way, and I never got more than about 4 models done in a unit before getting utterly demotivated and moving on to something else, and as I had such negative conditioning towards them, I seldom went back.

Just trying to head you off at the pass on that, but if you've got the determination to keep at it, best of luck.

I love seeing Imperial Fists painted well, and this certainly fits the bill.
