Does anybody actually run the raven as an assault transport first? I'm curious as to how effective it is, and does forcing it to go into hover mode essentially spell its doom?

What about running a stormtalon as an escort? I know the original post was for GK, but C:SM can have both.

I think most people have stopped risking 400+ points in an AV 12 HP 3 model. And, yes, most Stormraven that go to hover die the next turn. AV 12 is the sweet zone for being glanced to death by STR 7/8.

i think that the first, second and third responses are the best. You need anti tank, (melta) horde, (hurricane bolters) and something somewhere in the middle (assault cannon. I am a bit hazy on the rules, but if you get 2 shots of the plascannon then that is what I would take. It has higher strength than the assault cannon, is AP 2 and is a template weapon. It is very versatile and can deal with heavy infantry better than the assault cannon. Also if you are planning to get up close and personal then melta is the way to go. However if you are using a gunline army then lascannons are better.

For the specific unit I care about, the lascannon is better. Frankly, I get crap results from the assault cannon. It got even worse with the Eldar codex as more Eldar units have 3+ armor.

Furthermore, any flier that is vulnerable to the assault cannon will be wrecked by the missiles as well. So I really don't see a need for the assault cannon at all. Games where I'm shooting the Stormraven at ground targets I've usually won already anyway.

Look, we all know the Vendetta is better. That doesn't mean the Stormraven is unplayable. It's still a decent gunship in its own right, just not as good as the Vendetta.

1? You do know you can fire 2 missiles in one turn, I think 3 S8AP1 shots and 1 S9 AP2 shots is pretty good anti-tank.
